Seattle, San Jaun Islands, Anacortes, Vancouver PET

Post by Go Coogs' »

Wife and I vacationed for eight days in Washington state and did a little hop over to Vancouver, BC for one day.

First couple of days were spent in Seattle. Didn't spend too much time in one place. We didn't get to do or see everything we wanted either, but figured we'll be seeing a lot more of Seattle now that her parents have a vacation home and boat up in Anacortes.

Did the usual touristy stuff like the original Starbucks and Pikes Market Place. Also did the underground tour in Pioneer Square which was the coolest shit of the whole trip. Not much to see per se, but the guys doing the tours happen to be young historians. They were very funny and told good stories of the how the city was first built and why they built the city above the original city. Very interesting stuff. If you ever decide to visit Seattle, I highly recommend a tour. It's $16 per adult.

Also did Pikes Market Place. Very busy with tourists during the summer. Mrs. Rumps got to see the original Starbucks and I got to see the fish toss at the market. It's a pretty cool market filled with all kinds of merchants and good eats. I had smoked salmon on a stick. Not bad. Also could see Mt. Rainier form the back deck of Pike's Market. Pretty cool.

Here are a couple pics of a bulding, the space needle, a park with blue trees with all these faceless statues. Kind of weird but cool.

Here is a diner that has cock on duty. I peeked through the window and saw Stanley Pickle, theJON, and toddowen all sharing a booth.

Went to the EMP museum and saw a bunch of cool shit with a horror film exhibit, Avatard, Sci-fi shit, and a Nirvan, Hendrix, and ACDC exhibit. All pretty cool.

Image

That was pretty much it for Seattle. Next post is Vancouver and Anacortes.

Next day was spent in Anacortes. We first went to her parents vacation pad which is being completely renovated. It's on a cliff sandwiched between Mt. Erie and Burrows Bay. There is a lot of shit nearby that is just biking distance away. Lots of cool shit to do even if you don't own a boat.

We spent the next day in Vancouver, BC. Interesting city to say the least. Can someone explain to me what the flashing green light means? It was a 12% sales tax which now explains why Steve Francis didn't want to play for the Grizzlies. And apparently the city of Vancouver has an agreement worked out with all the homeless, drug addicts, and prostitutes where they can hang out on one street downtown (Hastings) and won't be bothered at all. We drove down the street and it immediately reminded me of Bunny's 'Amsterdam' in The Wire. Very eerie feeling.

We also visited Stanley Park and Gastown. Lots of cool pubs in Gastown and very good Canadian beer.

Nice. FYI: flashing green means you have the right of way for a left turn, like the green arrow light in other places. I worked for the USFS in 1959 out of Darrington WA. Spent a few weekends in Seattle back when Pike Street was, well, Pike Street. Cascade Mountains up there is God's country.

Here are some pics of the San Jaun Islands, Orcas Island, and Haro Strait. Really cool stuff. Great fish and chips, but they don't know shit about seasoning a steak. Had a huge 16oz ribeye with a peppery taste, but not enough salt. I may have chosen the wrong wine to go with it (Crios Malbec from Argentina).

Anyways, the islands were great. We visited Roche Harbor, Friday Harbor, Rosario Resort on Orcas Island, Capsana Harbor, and Spieden Island. Amazing stuff. Can't wait to do it again.

Ummmm... that's not a mountain. Even if you do live in Uston.

Is there any reason you decided to enter Canada by land... when you could have taken the ferry and seen the best part of Canada (Victoria). Also, seeing the killer whales on the ferry ride is always kinda cool.

Wolfman is correct however, on the main streets they have the continuously flashing green traffic lights. It allow for traffic to proceed albeit at a slower speed that when it is a full green light. In the event someone was crossing at that intersection the light will turn red and then revert to the flashing green once they left pedestrians and cars turning on the main road to enter the main roadway.

I found driving there quite manageable compared to my home in the 416 where the ethnics could not drive if their life depended on it...

Your home isn't in the 416.

You are one of those "ethnics" I dread sharing the road with when I drive up to Pacific Mall or Whitby.

I wouldn't doubt that for a minute. When everyone lacks peripheral vision collectively, it could bring a uniformity to the experience.

I am going to have to call BS on all the shots allegedly from Canada. There is no way you could take that many photos without at least three Tim Horton's finding their way into them.

What were your overall thoughts on Hongcouver?

Didn't want to take the ferry. We'd rather go in their boat, but we just ran out of time. We'll get to Victoria sooner or later.
