Free Agent Frenzy - It's a Seller's Market

Post by Go Coogs' »

With the new CBA going to a four year structure, the free agent pool just got bigger.

Where does who go?

Scrabble? - Texans, Pats, Skins, Cowboys, Raiders

Quinten Mikell? Saints, Skins, Iggles

Randy Moss?

Chad Greenway?

Jason Babin?

Antonio Cromartie?

Tambi Hali?

Deangelo Williams?

That's TambA Hali, you cretin. And speaking of Africans....

Might want to add Nnamdi Asomugha to your list. If the color red doesn't suit him, I wouldn't mind seeing him out of the Division....

Nnamdi?

I'm not privvy to any special Raiduh info, so take this speculation for what it's worth.

He's got BIG post-football speaking/political aspirations.
He wants to be involved... and he's a fuckin' lefty.

The dumb@ss. :meds:

And I think he's GAY, too.
Yeah, really.
But that's just more poptart speculation.

Anyway, I think he wants to get to a BIG market and get more national FACE exposure than he's gotten in Oakland, or that he would get in a lot of other 'small' markets.

KC?
Don't see it at all.

I also don't see him going to Houston.

Dallas?
Hmmmm....
Wouldn't rule it out, but don't really expect it.

NE?
Possible.

But I'll say he either ends up in DC... or remains in Oakland, because he's BEEN in Oakland and the team might be poised to REALLY turn the corner in '11.

Don't rule out the Iggles. Speaking of them, Kolb could potentially be traded if they can steal a 1st round pick for him though the market seems to be two second rounders. There is also talk of them showing interest in Burress. I hope that's not true.

Nnamdi, Kolb, V. Young discussion.

Skipper thinks he 'owes it' to Al and The Nation to stay in Oakland.
Also thinks he will remain a Raiduh.

IMO, he's totally overrated. Rivers never has any problems throwing on him.

IMO, he's totally overrated. Rivers never has any problems throwing on him.
Brett Favre didn't hesitate to throw Nnamdi's direction, either... the few times they played.

But I think you have to look at the bulk of Asomugha's work and realize he's pretty damn good.
Terrific cover guy, fairly big (with long arms), smart, and reasonably physical.
He's a good team guy with a good work ethic, also - not a knucklehead.

Honestly, he's not that 'dynamic,' though, and doesn't get many turnovers.
In part, because he's not thrown at?

Some guys build a reputation and opposing QB's shy away by habit - and especially when there is a demonstrably weaker corner on the other side, as has often been the case in the Nnamdi years in Oakland.

I agree that he's overrated when you look at salary.

He's on the short list of the best corners in the league, imo, but yeah, it doesn't bother me to hear that some think he's overrated.
Perhaps he is.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying he sucks or anything. I'm just saying that he isn't the second coming of Deion Sanders. He is not a shut down, forget that half of the field cornerback. He's a good player and a good character guy just not worth breaking the bank to obtain.

That being said, I'm sure he'll get a pretty ridiculous payday from somebody. Probably Houston.

He does.
And he's not likely to ever end up on the ridiculous "I'm a bankrupt former NFL multi-millionaire dumbfuck" list, either.

Some story I remember seeing a while back about Nnamdi choosing to roll around in, like, an '05 Camry, or some other "every man" sled like that.

Pretty much the antithesis of JaWalrus Russell, who will soon be the subject of bankruptcy stories.
Then he'll end up working at a car wash for 2 years - before being arrested for crack possession.
Finally contracting a nasty ass infection and dying in prison.

Being targeted only 28 times out of 900+ snaps says otherwise. That does make you a shutdown corner. I understand the number is scewed a bit based on the Raiders horrible run defense, but you can't ignore his ability to shutdown the guy he is responsible for.

Tampa is in the mix now. They are forced to spend 50+ million in cap money based on the the new CBA. If its about the money, then he'll join Tampa.

Feels good to be able to talk about football with some confidence that the season is going to happen. I can care less if the preseason gets a few knife wounds from this.

The Lions have the makings of an excellent defensive line...they just need to improve their linebacking corps and throw out some corners that don't need to be shutdown guys but guys that can hang with receivers long enough to allow the front 4 to get after the QB or force them into mistakes. Asomugha would be great but I don't see it happening. For the first time in a long time, the Lions will be a destination for a defensive player. I'm thinking they're more likely to get Joseph, Cromartie or Taylor. For a linebacker, I think they need to add the equivalent of what Vanden Bosch has been for the line...a veteran that might be a little past their prime but can lead by example and not take plays off. Bulluck would be my ideal choice even at 34...the familiarity with Schwartz is his best selling point.

The Newark Star-Ledger confirms the Jets have "reached out" to free agent Nnamdi Asomugha.
This comes on the heels of an earlier report from ESPN's Adam Schefter that the Jets plan to "make a run at" Asomugha to pair him with Darrelle Revis. Multiple reports suggest Asomugha is willing to leave money on the table to sign with playoff contender, and Rex Ryan's squad fits the bill. Asomugha also has designs on an acting career, which may give the Jets yet another edge.

Won't surprise me if it happens.

Raiders negotiating with LT J. Gaither?

Very interesting.

The man is a beast... IF (?) he has his head on straight.

If Gaither joins the dark side, we slide J. Veldheer over to play RT (where his ability to maul as a run-blocker is highlighted), we slide L. Walker back IN to play RG (where he's played before), assuming he's signed again, which seems likely, and we then have Loper, little Wiz, Satele, Barksdale, and B. Campbell (and some others) to piece in and make up the rest of the O-Line.

Looks promising.

R-Jack, 'fold, R. James (or other Raider lurkers) want to weigh in on Gaither?

If there was one area that dumping Tom Cable was going to be missed, it's the O-Line.

This year we are going in with a lot of inexperiance getting starts and the guys who were here last year switching from that zone blocking scheme into a traditional set. I'd say a new player coming in is in the same boat as the the returning players, continuity wise. Might as well try to bring in some type of talent upgrade.

We'll see how it goes. I wouldn't be shocked if DMac and Bush (if re-signed) both go over 1000 yards and I wouldn't be shocked if Campbell is left in a twitching heap on the field and doing a tribute to Al by emptying his bowels while unconsious.

The Chargers locked up the 2010 Pro Bowl selection by agreeing to terms on a five-year, $40 million deal, NFL Network insider Jason La Canfora reported, citing a league source. Weddle receives $19 million guaranteed and a $13 million signing bonus.

...and in other news:

The Chargers agreed to contract terms with three veteran free agents Tuesday: linebacker Takeo Spikes (three years), tackle Jeromey Clary (four years) and tight end Randy McMichael. Safety Bob Sanders previously agreed to a one-year contract.

That guy is a stud. He played multiple positions at Utah, and I think lined up as a pulling guard a few times. That's shaping up to be a pretty formidable secondary for the Bolts.

I don't see him taking 4 million less to go to the Jets in a state that has a state income tax. NY has 10M cap space. Houston will be offering 14M with no state income tax. He'll be a Texan or a Buc.

There really isn't much buzz here over a Nnamdi signing. Some of that cap room will go to resigning Davin Joseph. I wouldn't be surprised if they restructure Freeman's contract as well.

Talking heads here are predicting the Bucs are chasing some veteran D-line help.

Middle linebacker has been a huge hole here, unfortunately none worth much of a look in FA. Most likely a rookie will be starting there.

It Doesn't matter if he lives - if he works there he will get hit by the tax
I don't expect Screwball to know anything about taxes. You gotta EARN before you PAY them.

Another thing jizzmopper probably doesn't realize is that athletes have to pay state income taxes in all the states they actually play in. So, if he was on the Jets and they played the Cowboys on the road, for that particular game, he has to pay no state income taxes. So, for at least 8 games, scrabble is paying New York's state income tax. And yes, with contracts as big as they are getting, that is significant.

Cleanup in booth 3, Screwball. Get to it.

Don't get me wrong, the airwaves were abuzz with him being the leading FA to dump $ at. The so called insiders are saying don't count on it.

Now watch it end up happenning...

Pressuring the QB and stuffing the run are their glaring defensive weaknesses though.
