Al Davis

Post by Felix »

Got himself a new coffee boy headcoach in appointing Tom Cable, formerly the "interim" head coach....reportedly, Cable is "his own man and won't cowtow to Davis"

uh, yeah right....so, what's the over/under on Cable's stay

my guess, he'll be gone before the 2009 season reaches it's halfway mark

what say you duh fan...is this step-and-fetchit new coach going to last?

Cable will stay at least one year. Firing Cable halfway through next season would be tantamount to Davis admitting that he didn't know what they hell he was doing hiring Cable in the first place. Even Lane Kiffen stayed longer than that.

Looking at the Raider coaching situation objectively, I imagine Oakland will be in another head coach search within 365 days from now.
Hope I'm wrong, but I base that take on two fundamental points.

1. Tom Cable wouldn't be a head coach on any other team in the league. Hell, he very likely wouldn't even be up for O-Coordinator on any other team in the league.

2. Nobody of any note wanted to coach the Raiders.

So as I see it, this job is Cable's basically by default.

Not inspiring.

To Cable's credit, though, I will note a few things.

1. He has a better winning pct than the three coaches Oakland had before him -- Kiffin, Shell, Turner. Ok ... that isn't saying much. lol

2. The team he coached last year had every reason to pack it in and quit, but ... they didn't. In fact, they got BETTER toward the end of the season and they looked like they WANTED to get better under Cable. They won their last two games of the season over decent teams, Texans and Bucs. And the win at TB was over a team that was at home and basically playing what amounted to a playoff game. It was a good finish for the Raiders.

3. Russell got noticably better under Cable. Perhaps this was a case of him improving because he had more reps under his belt, I dunno. But he DID get better after Kiffin left.

4. Cable WANTS this job and he seems to have the "unique" ability to handle Al. Maybe we just have to see how this plays out over the long term, though.

I'm not that jazzed about the coordinators Oakland has now.

Marshall was HATED by Seahawk fan.
He had a pretty fair amount of talent to work with in Seattle and he didn't get them to perform well.
Will he do better in Oakland than R. Ryan did?
I dunno.

Ted Tollner doesn't do a lot for me as O-Coordinator.
He's just not distinguished himself at all, imo.

I DO like P. Hackett as a mentor for Russell, though.

Oakland has a couple of big issues, as I see it.

1. They have no GM -- hi, Al Davis!?

2. They are not in good shape with the cap. Too much spending last season that didn't pay off all that well.

As I look at the West, SD doesn't scare me.
Norv is in place.
I like.

Dungver will be in transition with McDaniels coming in.
I'm pleased to see Rat go, as he owned Oakland.
The Mules have a lot of work to do, especially on defense.

KC is an interesting team right now, and if this was a stock market, I'd buy into them, because the price is VERY low and there might be reason to think they will be moving up.
They've got a capable GM in place.
If Haley is the new coach, he brings some fire and offensive capability, although what he was working with in Arizona was a lot better than the talent that is currently in place in KC.
The Chiefs have a lot of room under the cap.
Look for them to be very active.
If they are wise they will follow Miami's lead and try to bring in a stable vet QB, like Pennington last year.
They will build the O-Line.
I could see KC contending for a division title (or more) 2 or 3 years down the road ... maybe.

As for Oakland, maybe they've caught lighting in a bottle with Cable.

But my common sense tells me that is just a fan's wet dream.

Wait and see.

How about commitment to idiocy?

$45 Million (28 Guaranteed) 3 yr contract for a CB????? - OK he's one of the best in the league but damn.

Far more laughable is they just gave $16 Mil ($9 Mill Guaranteed) to the Punter:

Hatorade party, fliends?

I like both signings, and I didn't expect to see both of 'em inked long-term.

It's all good.

Both guys are THE (or damn close to it) best in the league at their positions.

And both guys would have gotten damn near the same contracts had they signed elsewhere.

Don't kid yourselves.

Remember, there might be no salary cap in '10.

Gibril Wilson released.

WOAH!!

He was REALLY solid for Oakland last year.

Didn't see this one comin'.

Cable said there was a "split" in the lockerroom last year that he had to deal with.

Me guesses G. Wilson was somehow seen as a big playah in the ... split.

Oakland is officially very weak at safety as of right now.

yeah, but take solace in the fact they've locked up a top notch punter for 4 years.....of course, they only needed to pay him 3 times as much per year as the next highest paid punter in the league, but that's the genius of Al Davis....obviously, Lechler is an intricate part of the dud's uh, uh, uh Image

The Titans just signed their kicker, R. Baronis, to a 4 year 12 million dollar deal.
That's 3 million a year ... for a kicker.

THAT is almost twice what any kicker in the league got last year and nobody is crappin' their pants over it.

Oh, that's right, because it wasn't Al Davis.

Lechler got 9 million dollar ... guaranteed.
My guess, since the full details were not disclosed, is that perhaps 5 million (of his total 16 million) was in the form of a signing bonus.

In that case, his yearly base salary is 2.75 million.

And if all of the 9 million guaranteed he recieved is in the form of the signing bonus (which it could be), then his base salary drops to 1.75 million a year.

So Lechler is getting a base of between 1.75 - 2.75 million a year.

Last year the Titan punter, C. Hentrich was the highest paid punter in the league in base salary, at 1.6 million.

If the highest paid punter got 1.6 million last year, it figures that this year it would jump up to about 2 million.

Lechler is the best punter in the game.

My view is that Al probably paid a bit more to keep him than Lechler would have gotten on the open market.

But your take that Al paid Lechler three times what the next highest paid punter is paid is demonstrably ... FALSE and wack.

And look, smarty, Oakland went 5-11 last year.

Without Lechler they would have probably gone ... 4-12, or something really awful like that.

He's needed.

Pops, Gerbil was excellent vs. the run for us, but was incredibly weak in coverage as well. There were too many times I counted where he was either 2-3 steps away from his assignment, or flat out beat altogether. He wasnt a pro-bowl caliber player, but was decent. There's a reason the Gints didnt attempt to resign him after they had won the title, and we found out why. For his caliber, he was extremely overpaid ('Sup Alcula..... :x).

There are a few guys out there that Al can still give idiotic amounts of money to. I'd personally rather build through the draft.

Nice to see Edwards and Curry released. Next up is Harris and Walker. Grove gets to walk too, but he'll either re-sign or be replaced by Jeff Saturday. I like the trimming of fat on our roster-its time to give our young, talented kids a chance (ESPECIALLY our young WR's!!! When given playing time, they've been very good!) to show what they've got. Screw these half-assed playing vets who have already cashed in-I want the young HUNGRY kids who have something to prove in there mixing it up for us.

Mike, Norv inherited a team that was 14-2.
He took them to 11-5 in his first year, then 8-8 his second.

You see where we're going with this.

The West was as bad as I've ever seen it last year.

James, what you say about Gibril is true -- he was excellent v. the run and prolly a bit below average v. the pass.
But he was a vet, he was physical, and he was better than anything we've had back there for a few years.

But yeah, he was going to be overpaid if we kept him.
And I suspect he was somehow a "bad apple" in Cable's eyes.

So he's out.

Damn, we've struggled at safety for what seems like ... FOREVER.
I like the youth push, but I feel like safety is one position on the field where at least ONE of your guys there needs to be heady veteran.

Pops, The Bolts lost 4 of those games last year by 1-1-2-and 3 points, 3 of them on last second field goals. I think Norvula has done a credible job especially in the playoffs. He took them to the conference championship game his first year and has two big wins over Indy and a win vs. Tennesee. I see momentum building...

One of those loses would have been an 8 point loss if the refs actually knew the rules pertaining to advancing fumbles.

It's pretty much assumed when talking about the AFC West in here we are sometimes generalizing about this era and how the Chargers are the dominating team, aside from making it deep into the playoffs more often than not. Raider blockhead hasn't had much to cheer about lately so cut them some slack. As long as they stick to their own takes and don't start thieving others' we can enjoy them and look forward to many more years ahead of our team kicking their teams asses.
