Why wont my cd burner work?

Post by kcdave »

Basic info:

4 month old pc
Gateway
Windows Media Center 2005
Dual layer dvd
Nero

The problem:

When trying too burn a cd, the pc will not recognize that a disc has been inserted into the drive.

What is the problem, or what other info do you need too identify it?

Thanks in advance.

Does the drive work at all?
Did it come with the machine or did you have it intsalled?

check windows update for a patch regarding XP and issues with their drives not recognizing blank cdr's.

Is it black?

Wait, I guess that would be a "NON-PC" issue. Nevermind.

Could also be a drive problem. I would start with patching windows like DIT said. Then I'd see if there is a new driver for your burner. You can probably find it on Gateway's website, or if its manufactured by someone else, look on their website. You can also try uninstalling the device from windows and re-installing it.

If you are sure that your disks aren't damaged and you've patched windows and updated the drivers and neither windows or Nero can see the blank disks then I'd send the drive back for repairs. Since its a 4 month old pc, you should still have your 1 year warranty. Alternatively, drives are really cheap now, so you can always just go out and buy a new one.
