Thank You... State Farm

Post by M2 »

I felt with all the best players from Ped State about to jump ship and head off to better places it should have a thread of its own.

It looks like the first one off the ship is one of Ped's best players and slated to be their starting Ilb Khairi Fortt has decided to become Golden.

Can't blame him... after he took a visit to the Bay Area this weekend and fell in love with California.

Looks like Rivals had him as the #5 lb in the country coming out of high school and espn had him as the #2 lb.

http://rivals.yahoo.com/footballrecruit ... ortt-80274

http://insider.espn.go.com/college-foot ... airi-fortt

Not a bad add to the #1 defense in the PAC for the last 2 years.

You see, the PAC doesn't have the luxury of playing 8 of their 12 games at home.

With 4 high school games sprinkled in all at home.

Alabama would actually have to play teams with an offense... week in and week out... and there is no way they could keep up with that meatgrinder.

No more 4 high school games at home every year... and they couldn't just park the bus at home for 8 games a year.

They would actually have to go on the road (the SEC's biggest nightmare) and play teams OOC and travel thousands of miles.

Don't you have to be able to score points to win a game ?

Good luck with that.

Maynard will give you 14 to 21 points right off the bat... but will you be able to hold on to that lead when that's all the points you'll score ?

Van,

Aren't you guys "poaching" one of PSU's players too ?

I heard good ole' Lame Kiffin is up to his old tricks and told one of the U$C players that he no longer had a scholarship due to possibly poaching one of PSU's players so they could make room for him.

Kiffin rips scholarship from former walk-on; player "heartbroken"

Kiffin and U$C really do belong in the SEC.

Ummmm, M2...

The player said he would be “heartbroken” if it came to that because he had worked so hard to earn the scholarship. However, when the player initially received it, Kiffin explained that it was a year-to-year deal and that the player might have to give it back if USC’s roster limitations left no other recourse.

So, not only has it not even happened, it was already explained to the player at the time he was given his scholarship that it very well could happen.

Pssst.... Van, that's how ALL scholarships are structured in "College Football". It's on a yearly basis.

Only the slimeball coaches pull that kinda shit (yanking a scholly) to make room for a better player.

I'm sure that kid's parents are really happy having to come up with an extra $50,000 this year for the kid to play on the team.

The kid was told from the outset that it might happen, and that definitely is not the case when you're talking about the Sabans of the world who routinely shitcan lesser players on scholarship. This guy was just a walk-on, he would still be allowed to stay on the team, and he was glad to receive whatever he could get.

And for all that, it remains to be seen whether it will even become necessary.

You're spinning... and it's looking pathetic.

Once again, EVERY kid that gets a scholarship is told they're on a yearly basis.

Now you're trying to make excuses because Saban does it MORE ???

No, it's not official. Redd coming to USC is official, and that's great news for a team that was dangerously lacking in depth at the running back position. Now, if they could just find another D-Lineman or two....

Anyway, the walk-on may still keep his scholarship because the suspicion is that at least one of their current scholarship players has become academically ineligible, which would open up a spot for Redd.

So, pretty much, you're just whining in abject jealousy again. I like it.

The thing that really sucks for you is that with USC no longer bowl-ineligible your undeserved Holiday Bowl berth from last season will rightly become something like a Sun Bowl berth this year. Maybe you could at least see about scrounging up a win there, 'k?

Redd is a great back. PSU will be ok at RB. The days of the whole offense at PSU living and dying with a feature RB are well behind us.

M2, if USC lets a guy with poor academics remain eligible, you'll rip them for it. If they pull his schollie because he's flunking out, you accuse them of rigging the system in order to fit a new guy in. Well, long before these scholarship limits went into effect USC still declared lots of players academically ineligible.

You can't have it both ways.

And yeah, picking up a backup LB from a meh B1G program isn't likely to elevate your 6-6 team to any greater heights.

Ain't that the truth.

I'm not one of those PSU fans that reverts to the academic argument at every juncture. I will note the fact that football players fare better academically at PSU than they do at USC. I haven't lost sight of the fact that these kids go to school because it's essentially required of them for a crack at the NFL.

I did get a chuckle at Redd's statement today, which mentioned that his decision was partly about academics. Sure it is, dude.

And didn't Cal just play Presbyterian recently?

:meds:

PSUFan, fwiw USC is a better school academically than Penn St. I don't think there's any doubt about that, as USC always scores higher than Penn St in any of those "Ranking America's Universities" lists. USC is also a better 'connected' school in terms of post-football networking/career opportunities. Now, whether the football players who go there make proper use of those superior academics that are available to them, yes, you're you're right, in that regard I'm sure Penn St's players on the whole do a better job of taking advantage of their academic opportunities.

Still, if a guy actually does want to apply himself in the classroom, Redd's point about USC is a valid one.

It's official:

Cal gets PSU's starting MLB.

Image

Cal was a finalist for Fortt before he committed to Penn State as a high school senior.

"It was actually my first choice, but then I was a little younger and it was far from home," Fortt said. "I was a little afraid of being so far away from home."

http://espn.go.com/college-football/sto ... lden-bears

Cal will most likely blueshirt Fortt this year till he can increase his size and speed and get prepared to play linebacker on the best defense in the PAC.

We'll have to see how long it takes for him to get in Blasquezian shape and if he sees the field this year.

Cal held Texass to 255 yards of total offense... while Maynard turned the ball over by himself in the game 5 times to Texass' zero.

Cal also held U$C's vaunted offense to 313 total yards... while Maynard turned the ball over again another 5 times by himself in that game.

Just imagine if Cal didn't have Maynard.

Cal would be a scary ass team to face.

Wow, you really don't watch much Kal football, do you?

Maynard was credited with one fumble and one fumble lost. CJ Anderson, Marvin Jones and Isi Sofele were each also charged with one fumble and one fumble lost. So at most Maynard was responsible for 2 turnovers in the Texas game. Texas had a crap offense last season so holding them to 255 yards isn't that impressive. See Texas ATM, OU, Missouri and BYU which also all gave up around 250 yards to Texas.
