Mt. Hood's offense is in the red zone.

Looking to score three.

Three climbers reported missing on Mt. Hood
By Lisa Lednicer, The Oregonian
December 12, 2009, 11:44AM
Rescue workers are searching for three Mt. Hood climbers who were expected back at 2 p.m. Friday but haven't reported in.

The climbers, two men and one woman, are well-equipped, experienced climbers who were making a technical ascent of the mountain on the west side near Reid Glacier, said Detective Jim Strovink of the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office.

The glacier ranges in elevation from about 6,000 feet to 9,800 feet. The upper extent of the glacier is known for extensive crevasses.

The climbers don't have a beacon, Strovink said, but they do have a cell phone and sent a text message at 1 a.m. today. Strovink said rescuers are trying to find out what the text message said.

"Hopefully that will give some clarity as to where they're at," Strovink said. "You've got a needle in a haystack."

Oregon Air Guard officials said if the clouds lift, they'll search for the climbers. Portland Mountain Rescue workers have snowshoed to the treeline of the west side of the mountain to scan the area with bincoculars.

A friend of the climbers reported them missing. About 30 volunteers are involved in the search, Strovink said.

"Well-equipped, experiened climbers" and "ascending during a storm" is an oxymoron.

Texicles still occupying their glacial entombment out front should have told you.

Darwin is as Darwin does.

Has all freaking week to climb, but decided to brave it while the NWS was furiously issuing winter storm warnings? Pure. Freaking. Genius.

I've seen the remake of this movie so many times in my years here (42 of them now), it's become comedy to me.

A MLU (Mountain Locator Unit, a homing beacon) costs $5 to rent, and available at the same place you get the parking pass that's required to park on the mountain in winter (any of the plowed lots, anyway, which kinda beats digging your car out after a day on the mountain).

$5.

Takes the rescue crews a couple of hours to find people who are reported missing if MLU-equipped (but wait, the article says "well-equipped"... BWAHAHAHAHA!!!!). If not so equipped, it's generally a death-sentence.

Right now, it's not too terribly cold there -- 28 at Timberline, about 4 feet of base, but with about 12 feet of total snowfall so far this season, it might be much deeper a couple thousand feet above that, and probably colder.

Fuggin dumbasses.

What would happen to Dins or 88Hitlers- " Searchers found the body Saturday of a missing 26-year-old climber in a treacherous area near the 9,000-foot level of Mount Hood...."

And here is the account of 30 people that aren't as stupid as 88Braincells or Dinspussy- Searchers returned to Timberline's Wy'east Day Lodge about 4:30 p.m. as dusk fell. Conditions Saturday for the 30 searchers, mostly with Portland Mountain Rescue, were "icy and treacherous," Strovink said.

30 people made it back alive? In this weather?

Yeah, they made it back -- right after saying "It's too nasty to go up there," and turned around?

Those 30?

One thawing, two more tardcicles still missing.

And if they don't find them in the spring, they become glacier silt.

While many news outlets have been playing up the fact that the climbers did not bother to rent avalanche beacons locally available for $5, in reality the technology used in these specific models (Mt Hood Locator Units or MLUs) is outdated compared to that in most modern cell phones and GPS units which can immediately provide the victims exact location. MLUs use infrequently monitored radio frequencies and must be triangulated in order to be useful- a process which is time consuming and often impractical. These beacons also rely on a rip cord being pulled at the time of an incident and an unobstructed path for the signal to travel, making it worthless in a crevasse fall, if the victim is behind a rock or is struck suddenly without the chance to pull the cord.

...Katie Nolan, whose name also has been spelled Katti in various news reports and online posts, graduated from Touchet High in 1998. She was the class salutatorian and played volleyball, basketball and baseball.

She attended Bible College on the East Coast after high school and apparently traveled as a missionary to Nepal through the Word Made Flesh organization, according to some posts on Twitter....
...The three climbers, all Christians, met through church activities, Simons said, and Nolan has traveled extensively for Christian causes....

Worked a wine show there about 3 weeks ago.

Awesome place to spend a weekend/week/whatever. Although it's rare I'd ever stay there (that weekend was an exception, since we were "working" saturday and sunday), since my old buddy's family owns a cabin in the woods right up the road.

Fairly awesome part of the world, if you can avoid the inbreds.

And is there a cockier name for a place than "THE Resort at THE Mountain"? I think not.

honestly it should be closed to climbing in the winter. It is bad enough in the spring and summer. And locators should be mandatory. Too much money is being spent looking for these shitbricks that think they are "Too Good" to carry them.

I was up on the glacier Skiing at Timberline a few years back when the blackhawk did a dive and barrel roll down the mountain trying to rescue another band of dumbass's that fell into one of the biggest crevasses on the mountain.

I say bring them up on charges for endangering the lives of others... either that or just leave them...

Yet you advocate the closing of public lands and mandatory use of electronic tracking equipment?

Nice job on the KYOA thing.

BTW -- re: the Blackhawk crashing -- I know the guy who was in the basket (my buddy's coworker) when it crashed. Neither he nor anyone in his party did anything wrong -- the dumbasses above them went for a "group slide," and knocked him into the crevasse.

Nice job talking out your ass though.

The tard tracking devices should not be mandatory. Prospective tardcicles should be made aware though, that not a slim public dime will be spent playing hide and seek. If they get stuck on the hill without one, they had best fukking unstick themselves.
