Brian Westbrook- Cut

Post by jiminphilly »

The Eagles released former running back and longtime Giants killer Brian Westbrook Tuesday.

A day after the Chargers released their former franchise running back LaDainian Tomlinson, Westbrook became the second big-name 30-or-older running back to be released.

The move is not surprising considering Westbrook, 31, was scheduled to make $7.25 million this coming season. He was coming off a concussion-marred year in which he missed eight games after suffering two concussions.

Westbrook suffered the first concussion on Oct. 26 against Washington when he was hit in the head by linebacker London Fletcher's knee.
He missed three games after that but suffered another concussion and didn't return until the last two games of the regular season.

LeSean McCoy performed well enough to make the Eagles' all-time leader in yards from scrimmage (9,785) expendable.

"Brian is one of the greatest Eagles of all time and he is even a better person and leader," Eagles head coach Andy Reid said in a statement. "In my mind, there has not been a more versatile running back that the NFL has seen.

"I had a conversation with Brian this morning to let him know. This is by far the most difficult part of this job. We wanted to make this move now in order to maximize Brian's chances of landing with another NFL team."

The best Eagle RB in my lifetime and a very classy guy on and off the field. He really doesn't have much left in the tank and those concussions from last year are going to stay with him for a while.

Thanks for kicking my FFL teams ass for so many years, Westbrooke. You singlehandedly knocked me from the playoffs year before last and then when I picked you as my most expensive player this last year, you tanked on me.

Happy Trails. Fuck You.

Sproles ain't staying in San Diego. For the Chargers to tender him, they would have to pay him 7.3 million. They're not going to do that, which means Sproles is a free agent.

Wrong. He will be a restricted FA. Nobody is going to pay anywhere near 7.3 mil for a freaking return specialist/3rd down back.

Wrong dumbfuck. They franchised Sproles last year. That means his salary last year was 6.6 million to return kicks and be Tomlinson's insurance policy. That also means that were the Dolts to tender Sproles as an RFA this year, he would be entitled to a 10% raise. Which means his RFA tender would have to be 7.3 million. Maybe if you read your own local paper you would be aware of these things?
The Chargers and Sproles' agent will talk at the combine, for sure, and that is where a long-term contract will likely first be broached in earnest. But the Chargers will not offer a tender, and that means Sproles will be a free agent.

As such, he can shop himself without restriction. And since the Chargers have made it clear they see him as a kick returner and backup running back, if there is even one other team out there that thinks Sproles can be more of a focal point of their offense and still return kicks and is, thus, willing to offer him significantly more money, who would blame him for taking it?

Re: Montgomery was a great back and is most known for his run against the Cowboys in 1981 and had I been older and understood how great a back he was during his tenure I might feel differently. But I saw more of Westbrooks career and understood more of what he did.

Van Buren played in a different era of football and as I said, Westbrook is the best in my lifetime. It's nearly impossible to compare the players from Van Buren's era and today.

RC played the way he did b/c that's how Buddy told him to play.. and despite being a knucklehead he was a talented mofo.

Wilbert Montgomery was the best Iggles back I ever saw, but no, I never saw Van Buren - neither Steve nor Martin. Maybe Wolfie or Mace can chime in on those guys.

Cap acceleration could still be an issue if a deal is reached. Not that it matters for the Raiduhs. In Russell's case, that would be at least a 15 million dollar charge to the cap were he released this year.

Doesn't seem likely at this point, but he did say "if."

Exactly.

And it is when, not if. There will be a deal at some point in the future. And it is a very real possibility that deal will include a salary cap. Even Al Davis is smart enough to know that pro-rated cap charges from this season might very well accrue to the first new capped year. IMO, the owners are looking to crush the players this time out. And that means a cap and owners showing spending discipline as if the cap were still around until a deal gets done.

The Cowboys fall under the "Final Eight Plan". Jerrah ain't spending unless he loses a player first.

Come on Bri. You know Jerry can find ways around any rule. :D

I can see Hamlin being released and picking up Antrelle Rolle, but outside of that, probably not much action for the Cowboys via free agency. A possible trade may happen involving one of the three Cowboy running backs, but I certainly hope not, unless its a stud left tackle. Those are pretty hard to find, so I'm not banking on it.

Probably another boring off-season for Cowboy fan. Here's to hoping they work something out with Oxnard so I can take a day off and attend a little minicamp action.

The deal I would expect Jerrah to make would be with New England for Randy Moss.

That's great. But Roy Williams still sucks. And you and I both know that dropping a 1st and a 3rd on Moss is almost irresistible to an owner like Jones who would view Moss as "the final piece" on the road to a Super Bowl. And we know where the Super Bowl is this year.

I can't argue about Roy Williams sucking cack. But there's no way in hell Jerry is giving away any draft picks for Moss. The OL is aging and we need depth. We did a great job of addressing the defensive side of the ball last year with Brandon Williams and Victor Butler. This years draft will be full of hogs ready to mix it up on the OL. You can have Joe Montana and Jerry Rice in their primes, and without an offensive line, neither of them is worth a crap.
