Before the opening ceremonies even commence the fastest luge track ever claims its first victim.

I used to use the example of how fast can you run (maybe 15 mph) and what would it feel like if you ran into a wall full bore. (OUCH) 88 mph= death.

you are correct. 88mph straight into a fence, plexiglass or a solid sheet of ice will kill you deader than ted kennedy, but, sliding along the same is likely to just hurt a lot and maybe bust something. If there was some sort of catch fence above the track and on the proper side of a rather sturdy steel railing, that poor fukk might have lived to see his 22rd birfday.

The rest of the SEC should take note as to what happens when a team like Georgia goes on the road out of conference. You have been forewarned.

This should have never happened. Any competition where a person could die so easily is not to be considered a sports event. Even before the accident happened the competitors were saying it was too fast and dangerous. There is just no need for it. If I was a competitor I would drop out and seriously consider filing a lawsuit if it came to that.

So then, does that mean it's not a sporting event whenever mvscal pays a visit to the Vogels? Risk is certainly involved, at least to certain erstwhile tight, fleshy rings, along with the entire household's self-respect - not to mention their supply of Mr. Clean.

Jsc810 wrote:Dan, I follow your point, but with that theory, you may have eliminated everything in the Winter Olympics except for curling and figure skating.

One of the snowboarders (Shawn White?) was in an accident at the X-Games just before the Olympics started, and of course there's that "agony of defeat" dude that crashed during a ski jump.

Then there's the NASCAR factor; we watch the event in part because they crash. In any event, I agree that they should make it as safe as possible, but I don't see how all risk can be eliminated.
I have never considered auto racing to be a sport. It's just an event or a show. There is not much artistry or skill to it. Some might disagree with me. It's ok. You are right that people can get hurt or killed in other sports or olympic events too but the luger death was such a very egergrious example of something unnecessary. They could slow the track down by 10 or 15% and the fans would never notice a difference. Safety should always be the top priority.
