Trade talk '07

Post by Shoalzie »

The deadline is almost here...2 weeks from this coming Tuesday.

Calgary makes their second significant in the last two weeks...they pick up Brad Stuart and Wayne Primeau from Boston for Chuck Kobasew and Andrew Ference.
http://tsn.ca/nhl/news_story/?ID=195785&hubname=

They re-acquired Conroy near the end of last month...gotta love these two moves by the Flames. The Stuart deal might just be a case of a rent-a-player since he'll be a UFA but I guess we shouldn't be shocked if they lock him up long term before this summer.

Other moves in the last few days:
Eric Belanger changes teams twice...eventually ends up in Atlanta, Vishnevski to Nashville
http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/trade_deadline/ne ... e_deadline

Vasicek back to Carolina
http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/trade_deadline/ne ... e_deadline

The Rangers make a pair of deals...
Pick up Avery from the Kings on Monday
http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/trade_deadline/ne ... e_deadline

Moved Adam Hall to Minnesota for Pascal Dupuis

Kings will probably move Aaron Miller, Mattias Norstrom or Brent Sopel.

I could see the Avs trying to get rid of players. Turgeon is the only one that comes to mind as a UFA next year, but other potentials include Marek Svatos and Milan Hejduk, if they can get something in return, and - in Hejduk's case - if they can get someone to take on his contract. Otherwise, I don't see Colorado being a major player at the deadline. Management is beginning to realize the damage Lacroix did to the prospect well with all those trade deadline shenanigans, and they need to keep the young talent they have.

Dallas gets into the mix with a large trade of their own...they snag Ladislav Nagy from Phoenix for a 1st round pick and Mathias Tjarnqvist.

http://tsn.ca/headlines/news_story/?ID=195935

Interesting game tonight in Philly...Wings-Flyers on Versus. Not really the game itself but the Wings are rumored to be in the running to acquire Peter Forsberg. They'll get a firsthand look at the goods on the table and you never know, he could be joining the Wings on Red Bird I heading back to Detroit afterwards.

He's a UFA at the end of the year and his name alone will command quite a bit even if he's a rent-a-player. I'd honestly see him as a second line center on the Wings because the line of Datsyuk-Zetterberg-Holmstrom is one of the best lines going right now. Zetterberg is starting to fulfill the prophecy that he was going to be the next Forsberg...kind of ironic if they pick him up before the deadline. I'd do cartwheels if they can pick him up and not mortgage a big part of their future. It really depends on his health and whether or not he's really got it in him to play beyond this year with all of his injury problems.

Another name linked to the Wings...Todd *bleeping* Bertuzzi. How many former nemesises do they need on their team?

Past enemies/turned Red Wings in recent years include the following:
From the Leafs back in the old Norris days...
Bob Rouse
Todd Gill
Wendel Clark

Former Blues, a very familiar playoff opponent
Curtis Joseph
Brendan Shanahan
Brett Hull (also with the Stars)

From other Campbell Conference/Western Conference rivals:
Chris Chelios (Blackhawks)
Luc Robitaille (Kings)

Imagine adding a key member from the hated Avalanche in Forsberg or one of the most contraversial players in the league and someone who had a heated battle with the Wings during the '01-02 playoffs in Bertuzzi. Why don't the Wings just pull Roy and old Claude out of retirement while they're at it. Can Adam Deadmarsh play without headaches? Definitely a strange feeling to see guys you couldn't stand eventually become one of your own guys.

Well, I guess you got your answer. The GWG and an assist from Forsberg. If the Wings sign him, I hope he is a rent-a-player. The Avs only have one more game against Detroit and it is looking less likely that they'll meet Detroit or anyone else in the playoffs, so I wouldn't have to see many games with Forsberg in THAT sweater. It's almost sacrilege.

You can cross off Shane Doan from everyone's deadline wishlist...signed a 5-year extension with the Coyotes.

I just made my nightly TSN check and saw Forsberg and Nashville as the headline...I nearly shit myself. This is a huge move by the Preds. They vault ahead of everyone in the West...including the Ducks and the Wings. David Poile is playing for keeps by giving up all that for a potential rent-a-player. You have to believe that is there intention to re-sign him though. How sick is this lineup...

Kariya-Forsberg-Sullivan
Erat-Arnott-Dumont
Hartnell-Legwand-Radulov

Three very good lines and the Wings really have one quality scoring line and a solid checking line. The fans here want grit and the Wings won't go far in the playoffs with their current roster. Forsberg probably isn't what they needed but him going to a rival team and in the division, that's huge. Holland has to be working overtime to counter this move and the two moves Calgary made. If Nashville locks up the Central, the Wings better hold on for dear life to that #4 seed because starting the playoffs on the road against a team like Calgary or San Jose could be instant death.

philly gets 1st,2nd and 2 players for foppa? give me a break

what will the blues get for tkachuk and guerin, whos having one hell of a year.

also, brewer is also available. he has been playing some great hockey the past 2 months.(blues actually have nice depth at defense, and prospect in the wings, and a franchise dman playing for golden gophers.

could jackman be dealt? he has a lot of value, and wouldn't be missed as much as people think.

blues must get high 1st rounders and young players who are ready.

supposedly anaheim has hard on for brewer, guerin and tkachuk. lupul/picks/ and players mentioned

rumor has edmonton wanting brewer back, and looking to deal a centerman to st.louis, supposedly they have some good young centers.

The Oilers becoming sellers? Trade Bergeron to the Islanders...

http://tsn.ca/nhl/news_story/?ID=196732&hubname=nhl

There is an 8 point gap between 8th place Minnesota and 9th place Edmonton...it's not an impossible deficit to make up with 23 games to go. You have to wonder if there really is any truth to the rumors of them shopping Ryan Smyth. He'd be a great pick up for anyone because he's able to score those playoff-like goals. The only issue is his contract status...he's a UFA after this season.

Here's a quote from the link to the Bergeron trade on nhl.com...

"Oilers fans will likely see this as waiving the white flag on this season, their team eight points behind Minnesota for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference and their GM discarding one of his top four defencemen without getting immediate help in return"

No shit. First thing I said when I saw the trade was Lowe throwing in the towel. Not that Beregeron has been one of my faves this year but to give up a D man, an area we are sorely lacking in, for nothing that is going to appear this season is an absolutely stupid move. A GM that is known for some clever wheeling and dealing would be above this kind of move I would think.

Shoalzie brings up an excellent point about Smyth. With a "surrender" move like that is Smyth not far behind as trade bait to a contender?

Anson Carter dealt to the Hurricanes for a 5th rounder...listed as "BREAKING NEWS" on TSN.ca...no actual story yet.

TSN teased me when first brought up their site. They have a picture of Ryan Smyth and I saw the Red Wings mentioned in the lead of the article. I thought he was traded to Detroit but it was just a preview for tonight's game between the Wings and Oilers at the Joe.

I don't think he'll be moved...GMs are jamming other GMs when it comes to potential free agents on the trade market. I bet Smyth would command about as much as Forsberg yielded from Nashville...maybe more since Smyth has more mileage left on his tires.

You can scratch three names on the trade market:
The Blues re-sign Brewer and Legace...

http://tsn.ca/nhl/news_story/?ID=197451&hubname=

Bruins re-sign Sturm...

http://tsn.ca/nhl/news_story/?ID=197455&hubname=

I didn't think the Bruins would be sellers and right now, they're pushing hard for a playoff spot. I think they moved Stuart just because they didn't feel they'd re-sign and him and they'd at least get something in return for him.

As for the Blues, that still leaves Guerin and Tkachuk as possible deadline movers. With Bertuzzi's health issues and Smyth unlikely to be traded, I think those two may be the best wingers available for Tuesday.

This trade market is very curious...you hear a lot about GMs from sellers asking for too much. Will this prevent a lot moves to be made before Tuesday or will the prices go down and we'll see the usually 15-20 moves made before the deadline?

Zhitnik moved for the second time this year...this time to the Thrashers, in exchange for Braydon Coburn...

http://tsn.ca/nhl/news_story/?ID=197567&hubname=

The Ducks made a minor deal but acquired a first round pick from the Lightning in the process...Brian Burke working his magic again. Who's he gonna get: Tkachuk, Guerin, Souray?

Tkachuk could be on his way to Atlanta...needs to waive his NTC to make it possible though. The pieces the Thrashers will be sending back in return probably won't be known until the deal actually goes through.

http://tsn.ca/nhl/news_story/?ID=197640&hubname=

The Thrashers are slipping dangerously close to being bubble team for the playoffs when for a while, they were safely in first place in the Southeast Division. They're one of the worst defensive teams in the league while being a very potent offensive club. Getting Zhitnik should help their defense and getting Tkachuk is really nothing more than just stockpiling the firepower on the wing. They have very little talent at center so they'll have arguably the best collection of top 6 wingers in the league but probably the worst collection of centers. Holik and Rucchin have never been top line centers...Waddell needs to find a center that compete with the top centers in the East.

1st,2nd, and 3rd next year for tkachuk? i say blues got a great deal. plus if he resigns in atlanta, blues get a 1st rounder in 08(wont happen)

he'll probably be back in st.louis next year, to finish out his career with a 2 year deal(ick).

and metropolit is a fill in center, a thow in, who will actually be a decent get to finish the season.

guerin, cajanek etc still out there for the taking.

blues could and should have 3 1st round picks for next years draft. making a move up possible.

espn.com is speculating that Roberts may be headed to the Pens. Solid addition for Pittburgh, if it's true, to get some more veteran leadership in there, but I don't think it will get them a Cup. Seems like the Pens would be better off just standing pat for now. They've got some of the best young talent in the league, and could be up-and-comers. You have to wonder how much they might get out of Roberts after this year, and if he's not the missing piece to the Cup THIS year, why even bother?

^^^

I've been following that story on TSN since lunchtime...still no news on who the Pens are proposing to trade away and if Roberts will waive his NTC. Roberts didn't fly with the Panthers today so something could be up. His original teams of choice were either the Senators or Maple Leafs. The biggest thing for the Pens is they need some toughness and probably some more veteran leadership in the room. They've got Recchi and Gonchar but pretty much the rest of the team is very young. You need some guys who've been through the wars to help guide them through the tough battles they're bound to face when the playoffs start.

There has been a trade completed today though...Zednik to the Islanders for a 2nd round pick

Kukkonen is a younger defenseman...Holmgren seems to be in the mode of adding young pieces since they're well out of contention. You add a gritty forward in Upshall from the Forsberg trade and add three defenseman in the 25 and under range. I think they've done quite well with their fire sale. Calder was going to be a UFA at the end of the season and it sounded like they tried to re-sign him to a lower salary since he was having a down season. Instead, they trade him and pick up a defenseman and a draft pick...that's not a bad move. The Flyers are getting younger and freeing up cap space for next year...what's wrong with that?

Biron to Philly for an "undisclosed draft pick." Philly is poising themselves for next year. With a decent draft and a couple of good free agent signings, they could really turn things around next year.

Conklin to Buffalo and Laraque to the Pens.

The Sabres opt for a cheaper option at backup goaltending...they trade Biron to the Flyers for a pick and then acquire Ty Conklin from Columbus. Biron will finally get his chance to be a #1 goalie again in Philly. No word on if there are talks of signing him long term as of yet...he's a free agent after the season.

I'd say that's a nice move for San Jose. Thornton and Guerin are similar types of players. Put those two on different lines and it will create matchup problems for sure. Put them on the same line and you're going to need a Norris-caliber d-man to stop them.

So let's see. The first round of the draft will go something like:
1. Philadelphia
2. St. Louis
3. St. Louis
4. St. Louis
5. St. Louis

etc....

Looks like the Blues are fully into rebuilding mode.

Not so horrible after years of drafting from the middle down. Not only that but recent picks haven't been busts (see '95-two years ago).
