for me it would be Otis Redding, Europe late 60´s

the europs worshipped Otis and he was at the top of his form.

SG - I saw EVH in 1980, center stage, front row...... DLR took my hat (actually, it was my brother's hat), wore it for about 4 songs, and lost it. My brother didn't believe my story when asking where it was.

my uncle saw VH in Tulsa at some place about as big as my apartment right before VH first came out. and he'd seen a lot of good bands and he said it was the best he ever saw. without question.

good call on Otis Redding. i grew up on Otis. My mom and pops saw the godfather James Brown at the OKC fairgrounds in the mid late 60's. i bet that was a SHOW. they say they were the only white people there.

i also used to work for an Italian chef who was at the Floyd show at Pompeii. he was in his mid 40's at the time. he fucking ruled. he's no longer with us.

Truth be told, I bought "Meddle" long before any sort of experimentation.

Sober, drunk, THC'd or shroom'd, Echoes, kicks ass and so does "Live At Pompei".

The effect of "Careful With That Axe Eugene" varied from time to time, but it's a killer tune, as well.

For me, it would probably be UFO with Michael Schenker in '78 or '79 (Chicago or Louisville for the recording of "Strangers in the Night")

Also -- Rush in St. Louis, 1981. Have a bootlegged CD of that radio concert ... amazing.

Rack the Otis reset. The dude was incredible. He blew EVERYBODY away at Monterey - even Hendrix and the Who. I'm partial to him, as he's buried only about 10 miles from where I live, but the dude was THE shit. James Brown (who also actually lived here in Macon for a while when he was growing up) may have been the godfather, but IMO, Otis was the GOD of soul......

The Doors. Any performance in the late 60's (before Morrison got too freaking zoned out).

Between the accounts I've read and the stories I've been told by folks I know who saw them, Morrison and the Doors not only kicked ass musically, but there was always that edgy, dangerous feeling of never knowing exactly what might happen.

Yeah. Definitely the Doors.

I was in Wisconsin, when he died up there. I'll never forget it. I was with my dad, driving from Wausau to Milwaukee, and rock stations from Wausau to Madison to Milwaukee to Chicago (and anything else we could pick up), were going on and on about a helicopter crash and how Eric Clapton could have been on it. I was so fucking pissed, and said as much to my dad. I was like ... "wtf, haven't these idiots even heard of Stevie Ray up here?" My dad is hip and used to live in Texas, and he knew of Stevie Ray pretty well.

Anyway, about the time we finally get to Milwaukee, it was finally confirmed that it was Stevie Ray who was in the helicopter and didn't survive. :cry:

Then, and only then, did they start up with the nonstop Stevie Ray "rock blocks." :x :x

I was scared to go up to Wisconsin after that from KC, even if it was to see my grandparents.

I saw SRV "open" for Robert Plant. I say "open" because that was easily the longest set I've ever seen from an opening act. It was just after Stevie had gone to rehab and cleaned his life up and it showed. SRV played about 70 minutes and just blew the rafters off the place. Only Robert Plant could have had the balls to follow that with his own 2 hour mix of Zep standards and solo work.

I think the 25 dollars I paid for that ducat might have been worth it. :wink:

Alice in Chains - They were supposed to open for Metallica several years ago. I was going to that show mostly for AiC. We got there and the first opening band played. Then we got the news that AiC was not there... they were at some stupid ass MTV thing or some shit like that. The band that replaced them got onstage and the first thing the singer said was "sorry we're not Alice in Chains". Get off the stage, pussy. Just bring on Metallica then. So I never did get to see AiC. :cry:

John Denver - Got to see him a few times before he left on a jet plane. (Repeating myself from another thread). JD may not have been a heavy rocker, but he was instrumental in the fight against censorship.
