I agree with you. But we all like to take sides and compete. It's one of our favorite things to do. Most people don't like the oddball who thinks for himself, because he can't be trusted to play along with one team or the other. We're taught the importance of teamwork from a very young age. And it's like they say, there's no 'i" in team. A nation full of independent thinkers would be chaos! Or would it? The two party system is so ingrained in our way of life, it's hard to imagine it ever coming to an end. Fwiw (not much, I know), if I was an NFL owner I would require all of my employees to stand for the anthem.

In a public setting, my employees should show basic respect.

If they didn't, I would fine them.

As Don noted, NFL players have behavior rules enforced on them EVERY DAY.
Curfews, dress codes, requirements at public appearances, etc.

It's completely reasonable for an employer to have employees stand for the anthem.

A player can take part in activism on his solo time.
If he's out at a game and he wants to sit during the anthem, fine.
Do your thang.

Just not on company time.
It's blatantly disrespectful and stupid.

An employer should not be required to put up with that.

Here's my national anthem/childhood memory story...

My dad took me to a college basketball game (NAIA) in our city when I was about 12 years old.

After the game, my dad said he wanted to find the facility manager.
I didn't know why.

He looked around and then found the guy.

Dad: Hey, I couldn't help but notice that for some reason the national anthem was not played before the game. Why wasn't it? I didn't feel good about that.

Manager: :| Okay. I'll look into this.

Dad: Yeah, thanks. This was a new experience for me. I gave me a bad feeling.
