I looked up a volunteer opportunity with DCPS when I first moved here and I was turned off by the extensive background checks they wanted me to do to volunteer. Yes, I understand that you want to ensure that no pederasts or Ne'er-do-wells like Schmickety get involved with kids, but it was much more extensive than the background check I did in Elkhart, so I passed. We'll see what opportunities there are in the future.
We are losing sports officials at the youth and HS levels. Schools are requiring background checks and are making the officials pay for them. Many school districts use their own “service” and as such an official may have to pay for 8-10 background checks a year. Lots just say screw that. Schools then bitch about the lack of officials.
Thankfully state associations and NASO are working with states to standardize the background check process.
But yeah I get that it can be a pain.

My opportunity with DCPS wasn't sports officiating and neither was my volunteering in Elkhart. It was simply showing up after school a couple times a week and playing games and shooting the shit with kids.
Officiating games was great and fun when I lived in Michigan but I don't think the opportunity is right for me in DC. I don't drive and I work a 9-5 job. I could work weekends but I'd be limited to my immediate 'hood and it's just not worth my time. Though as an inactive official I totally agree with you on issues facing leagues and officials. These leagues are refusing to face reality, they won't pay refs better and instead they bitch and moan about how hard it is.

Automation is here. We have two choices A) stay with the kleptocracy and have one rich person and 300 mil poor people (because there are no jobs because robots are doing all the work) or B) seize the means of production and all go to the beach.

The reality is that work will always be available, perhaps just in different forms than what was before. Work scratches an itch we have as humans and spending all day, every day at the beach would be unbelievably boring. Working gives you a measurement to gauge your life and see how you are impacting your world, making a difference, or as a rod to determine when those moments of relaxation are due.
Go ahead and explain how automation is going to determine where the leaking pipe is in your house or why the toilet won’t flush. Then explain how it will fill the pot hole on your local street.
Automation might replace some repetitive tasks but it isn’t all that.
