The observed readings aren’t matching up with the forecast except in a few locations. Doesn’t mean the damage wasn’t extensive to those that were affected.

I don’t know. From here it seems pretty bad. But if you say it’s overrated I guess I’ll just have to go along with that. Have a nice day.

Has anyone actually seen recorded wind speeds of 155 mph from this storm or is that number (widely reported) based on estimates or best guesses? The highest official observed number I have seen is 134. Certainly destructive and nothing to sneeze at, but still 21 mph below the widely reported speed.

The NOAA keeps a lot of data. You just need to search around on their website. Not easy from a phone BTW.

I know they do. I also have seen a good number of stations failed when winds reached 116+. I will look around some more, but have been watching the Westher Channel coverage and they have reported a ton of wind speed readings but none close to 155.

The third most-powerful hurricane in recorded history to hit the U.S. mainland, Michael washed away homes, destroyed vehicles and ripped apart buildings with maximum sustained winds of 155 mph.
That's one or two mph short of a category 5. Are you all afraid that if you don't downplay the severity of these storms that they will lend credence to climate change?

You’re buying their sales job, aren’t you? When trying to form an educated theory on something, would it be logical to only use 0.000000003% of available information?
Yes, it's all a plot. The government brought in hundreds of bulldozers last night and leveled all those house at Mexico Beach. Idiot.

Every media report I saw put the winds at 155 mph. Including the quote above. Which came from Fox News.

Hardly. My questions are leaning the other way. I have seen zero confirmed reports of 155 sustained winds. Yet the storm surge was Roll Tide efficient. Is this storm overstated for ratings? Did this destruction happen in a true category 3 storm?

Edit: I was answering Melty's post here, but LS, here's your 155 recorded wind speed.

Wed 1:00 pm CDT:

https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/archive/2018/a ... .016.shtml?
MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS...155 MPH...250 KM/H
You can see archived reports, at least hourly, right here:

https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/archive/2018/MICHAEL.shtml

So, no, there weren't 155 mph winds everywhere for an extended period of time. But the NWS recorded 155 mph. I know you'd rather believe Alex Jones or Fat Limbaugh than those teat sucking government scientists, but your lack of ability to apply any sort of coherent reason has already been well documented.

Who really cares if it was 140 or 155? Maybe better to err on the side of caution when life or death, or going against a Sicilian, is involved.

As you can see from the discussions side, the wind speeds decreased, as would be expected, pretty quickly as soon as it made landfall.

Sustained winds of 155?

That's utter shit. They may have recorded (somewhere) a 155 gust, but not 155 sustained.

Going back to that original marine forecast I posted. 75' seas? Bwahahaha! Absolute horseshit. There's probably never been a 75' wave in the GoM... The Tyndall buoy never recorded anything over 31' (last I saw, and that was after landfall), and it was on the east side of the wall.

THAT is what I'm bitching about. They were exaggerating. Like fuck.
Ha. Fatty thought someone would actually read his post after all he has done for two decades is shit on the board. Stupid fatty.

Stuppo - I'm WELL aware of what that said. I'm merely presenting factual observations that were recorded by weather stations and buoys - you know - that were IN the fucking thing?

Thanks for the effort Mikey, but I am not looking for a bulletin. I want the actual wind speed data as recorded by one of the many recording stations the weather service uses. I also understand some will fail. But in those cases we would still have the record up to the time at which they did fail.

Further I am not trying to use this info to call anyone out or point blame. Rather I think we do a pretty poor job recording non standard weather events. There will also be take aways from this storm in the form of insurance and building code updates. These should have the best/accurate weather data to follow rather than a best guess or after the fact reconstruction.

I also understand that getting accurate readings is very difficult. NOAA and the NHC use drops from Hurricane Hunter aircraft to determine much of the wind speeds and pressure. But the closer those drops get to the ground the less accurate they are and readings from oil platforms and buoys are a better indicator.

Anywho, let me know if you happen across an actual reading.

What are you trying to get at? Lots of assumptions if I am reading your post correctly. First it assumes there are no platforms or buoys in near shore coastal waters. Second it builds upon that by assuming the rapid intensification came inshore of most/all platforms and buoys. Thirdly, that somehow the trailing side didn’t intensify at the same rate or something since platforms and buoys didn’t record higher wind speeds.

But even assuming that all those assumptions are true (which I don’t) it still doesn’t explain the lack of evidence supporting the 155mph wind claim.

near 155 mph (250 km/h) with higher gusts. Michael is an extremely
dangerous category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind
