One band I never saw, I always preferred others. Looks like the right time to see them though, must have been a great show.

1981, Boulder CO at CU stadium.

George Thoroughgood was a tough act to follow.

I believe Journey followed Thoroughgood. Then the Stones.

I saw Lonesome George in a college hockey rink 6 years after that. Not a bad show, not a great show.

Saw Thoroughgood at San Diego State. It was a great show, it was also the loudest show I've been to, my ears rang until the next day.

Never seen the Stone perform.

The wife saw them in 1965 or 1966 in San Bernardino.

I was too young to see the Stones when they didn't suck. So I haven't seen them at all. The Who tought me about paying too much to see a band beyond it's prime.

Yea, I've heard stories that the tape loops were a source of constant irritation on that tour. It took a while before things got synched up. I guess they nailed it by the time I saw them in 89. It was seeing them in 97 when they tried to turn Quadrophenia into a Broadway revue that soured me on seeing bands past their prime.

The only thing I can compare that too as far as a band on their game and firing at all cylinders combined with perfect seats in my concert experiences is seeing Deep Purple during the Perfect Strangers Tour front row stage left.

Blown away by the tape loop or a real performance? I saw the Who in the late 80's and thought, wow, they sound just like off the record! Probably had the tape loop runnin' and were lip syncing. Joe Bonamassa eluded to as much on his live album notes with Beth Hart last year. Proclaiming what you hear is a real performance with no over dubs, unlike many live shows.
...in lieu of modern times and digital manipulation. Live performances have also suffered leaving the audience with a sense that they might well have stayed home and listened to a record because with the exception of a few live "sing it" moments and pyro explosions, what they heard was a computer.

I saw Page/Plant in the early 90's and thought they sounded just like off the radio too, probably another tape loop.

That sour's me on any of the old crusties, I'll listen to an album if that is what i want to hear. You want a real live show, check out Bonamassa, Kenny Wayne Sheppard, Tedeschi Trucks Band, etc, you won't be disappointed.

Thanks for the clarification PW, I'm still pretty skeptical of some of the older acts and probably would avoid at this point. With computer play backs still in big demand for many live shows evidently.

Papa Willie wrote:I saw the Who down at Joe Robbie Stadium in Miami in '89. Quite honestly - it was one of the better shows I've ever seen. Daltry's voice was still just nails at that time. Pete was having hearing problems at that time and had been playing a lot of acoustic on that tour - until Miami. He played electric all night, and I swear I've never heard him play better. Simon Phillips on drums was just more monster than you can get. No offense to Moon, but he couldn't hold a candle to SP...

I really didn't expect much out of that show, and was blown away with them!
Same here. The 89 show I saw at Rich Stadium in Orchard Park, NY. I camped out for tickets and got 20th row seats in a stadium that holds over 80k. We had a blast. Townshend played acoustic guitar for about the first 40 minutes of the show, then busted out the electric and stayed mostly electric for the rest of the show. It was a great show, heard all my favorite numbers.

So when I heard about the 97 show I was gassed. By this time I wasn't camping out for tickets, but I had a better plan anyway. A friend of mine told me about a place called World Wide News in downtown Rochester that in addition to selling every newspaper you could possibly want, was also a Ticketmaster vendor. Except they didn't really advertise that and the store was close to some shady parts of town and there were a lot of degenerate winos and homeless folk. So there were no lines for tickets. Even for big name acts.

So I pull up 30 minutes before tickets go on sale, nobody is in the store, just the cashier. I was first in line. I got 14th row tickets for myself and two friends in the Darien Lake shell. We are on like a video game with an ape climbing a building.

Then it is showtime, the Who were doing one of my favorite albums ever, "Quadrophenia," cover to cover. But what they didn't tell us was that it would be with a bunch of actors singing most of the material. And backups and a bunch of other instrumentalists and most of Pete's guitar parts played by his still non hearing impaired brother Simon. After the show, my best friend and I sat in our ride waiting for the lot to clear out a little and played "Live at Leeds" as loud as possible to wash away the memory of that crapfest. You know, the tour before the one Sam saw.

I hate you Sam.

BTW, Roger never could sing "Have a Cigar." That's why Roy Harper Sang it on the Album cut.

Living Colour blew them off the stage.

Saw the Stones in '05, but it was hard to judge the performance as the sound in the Cardinals arena was just horrible. An energetic but sort of sloppy show that I'm glad I got to attend, but it had that "band winding down" feel to it.

On the other hand, I saw the Who tour in '82 in Tempe and it was great. The band was tight, the theatrics of Roger and Pete were classic, but no Keith kind of sucked. The opening acts were John (Cougar) Mellencamp and the highlight of his set was him getting beaned by a beer bottle. He left the stage in the middle of the second song and didn't return for about 20 minutes, but when he came back he was wearing a hard hat. That was funny. The other act was Loverboy and needless to say, ugh.

I see the reviews for the Stones are very good after opening their tour in San Diego over the weekend. A couple of my co-workers who have seen them numerous times said they were terrific. The local news covered the show before it started, lots of grand parents with grand children, looked like the Leisure World Bus just made a stop at an Indian casino. Lol.

Should be a great show for those of you with tickets.

Nothing says rock and roll more than a bunch of blue hairs with walkers trying to relive their glory days. Stick a fork in them.
