I just watched a short video about the '85 Bears...

Post by poptart »

Greatest defensive season I have ever seen.

Play-after-play of Bear opponents just being destroyed.
I was getting off on it.
Laffing at it.

And I realized that half of those plays would be flagged if they happened in 2014.

The game has totally changed in three decades -- and if someone is destroyed now, a flag is flying.
It doesn't matter if it was a head shot, or whatever...

If someone gets his ass kicked, it's illegal.

Wasn't "The Fridge" the only 300 lb player at the time? These day most college OLs average over 300 lb.

One of my favorite games that year was watching the Bears obliterate the Cowboys 44-0. Back then the Cowboys never got the snot kicked out of them. I was 19 and had never seen the Cowboys just straight get jacked like that IN MY ENTIRE LIFE. That game was like watching Secretariat at Belmont, Mark Spitz in Munich, Andre the Giant against a normal person...

I contend the 2000 Ravens defense was better.

An excellent defense, no doubt.

But comparing them to the 85 Bears?

Puh-leez.

Mike Singletary was every bit as good as Ray Lewis(a better pass-rusher, maybe not quite as good in coverage), and the supporting cast was better at almost every position.

You could make a case for the 2000 Ravens.
They allowed fewer points than the '85 Bears -- and they posted four shutouts.

The Bears posted two playoff game shutouts, though.

Both were scary, but I see the '85 Bears defense as better.

Interesting debate between the '85 Bears and 2000 Ravens. Unfortunately, I don't agree with either one of these teams as having the best defense ever. I'd have to go with the 1991 Philadelphia Eagles because they faced better offenses and had such a shitty offense themselves. Gang Green created 48 turnovers but the offense coughed up the ball a mind boggling 43 times that season.

I can't find any TOP statistics for 1991, but I imagine the Bears and Ravens run offense and the inferior offenses they played against, they controlled TOP and their defense was a lot more rested than that Eagles' D. I know "what ifs" are stupid when talking about football, but had Cunningham not blown out his knee in game one that season, I think the Eagles defense would be talked about more than the 2000 Ravens and '85 Bears.

Just my .02

You do realize that the Ravens offense went five straight games without an offensive touchdown.....and won three of them?

Any team that upgrades to Trent fucking Dilfer controls nothing on offense.

When is Bri going to come in and tell us that the '76 Steeler defense was the best ever?

Posted five shutouts -- including three in a row.

Think of how the NFL is played now.
Will that ever happen again?

That team lost to the Raiders in the AFC title game, but Pitty was seriously banged up -- otherwise they quite possibly would have won the SB again that year.
Not sure, though, because Oakland went 13-1 that season, and the Snake was at his wizardly best that year.

Pittsburgh had a run of about 5 years where their defense was just fucking NAILS.

You do realize that Baltimore's offense ran the 5th most plays in the league that year and held the ball seven minutes longer than their opponent per game? Don't get me wrong, Baltimore's defense can be argued as one of the best considering what they did against Denver and Oakland in the postseason, but my point is they were well rested going into the playoffs based on their offense's TOP. Also, nine of their opponents in the regular season were ranked in the bottom 10 on offense.

Philadelphia played some bottom dwellers too, but 8 of their opponents were ranked in the top 8 in offense with Washington being ranked #1 (played them twice), San Fran ranked 3rd and Houston ranked 4th. I can't prove it, but I imagine they did not control TOP or probably broke even against their opponent. They were dead last in YPC in rushing at 3.1 and only ran for 1396 yards and ranked 25th out of 28 overall in yards on offense. Again, their offense coughed up the ball 43 times which was second worse in the NFL that season and they still managed a 10-6 record because of that ridiculous defense.

I'm sorry, but Philly's '91 Gang Green gets the nod over the '85 Bears and the 2000 Ravens. They had no business being that good, but they were.

Baltimore's d was based on stopping the run. Hence, more 3 and outs. Hence, less time the other team is on the field. Hence, more chances for the offense.

The TOP argument is a two way street.

Love me some 76 Steelers Tart. But I would be a SBSH (Steelers Ball Sucking Homer) to not give the 85 Bears their due props. I have never seen a defense attack the way the 46 attacked with Buddy calling the plays and Mike Singletary manning the middle. They didn't just stop people, they made defensive scoring into an art form.

They defeated the pro passing rules enacted after the 76 season by crushing everything in their path. Everyone knew they were going to blitz and, unless your name was Dan Marino, there wasn't a fucking thing you could do about it.

Exactly.

ATTACK is the right word for it.

On virtually every play, they ATTACKED the offense.

And it wasn't like they had two all-pro corners that they just left out there to handle business.
They didn't.
Their corners were not special.

But the front was incredible and could not be stopped.

McMichael, Dent, Perry, Hampton, Marshall, Singletary, Wilson...

Some of the games that year were clown shows, the Bear defense so totally humiliated the opposing offense.

Good shit.
Seriously good.

91 Eagles defence outscored the offence for more than that. They had a carpenter playing quarterback.

Seattle under Rusty Tillman gets a mention?

And the Ravens were not even in the top five stopping the pass that year. Nor were the Ravens the best overall defense that year.

You're still proving my point. The Eagles defense had zero control over what the offense was doing, so for them to only give up 3500+ yards on the season after the offense turned the ball over so many times, they never cracked. The defense created 48 turnovers and almost everyone of those turnovers was negated by the offense.

Going back to 1990 there a handful of teams who had just as many or more turnovers than the Eagles in '91, but they were all top ten offenses. Most of them being being top 3 offenses. Again, Gang Green pretty much had to do it on their own. At least I give the 2000 Ravens a puncher's chance because they could run the ball with Jamal Lewis and Priest Holmes in the backfield. Not only that, but they took care of the ball a lot better than that Eagles offense did. The Ravens D was one of the best and so was that Bears D (you can even make an argument for the '77 Falcons and '76 Steelers), but I'm still in awe of what that Eagles defense did and the record they had with that putrid offense.

BTW, if I were going to home for a Steelers defense, it would be the 08 squad. These guys played in the era of gunsligning offenses, played the toughest schedule in the league that year and produced better numbers than the 85 Bears.

Team Run Pass
85 Bears 82.4 176.0
91 Eagles 71.0 150.8
08 Steelers 80.2 156.9

Of course, Jerome Brown had to ruin something potentially great and having Rich Kotite as a head coach didn't help much on offense.

If that is a penalty, you just can't play football any longer.

Every play in the "'85 Bears" clip I watched showed offensive dudes getting lit up like that -- and a lot worse, and there were no flags flying.
