Nice work, when you can get it

Post by War Wagon »

Ever wonder why some teams even bother? Knowing they have absolutely no chance of even a top 15 finish, much less competing for the Chase?

A scrub who can't even finish one lap still wins some BIG cash just for starting the race. I guess that makes it worthwhile just showing up and trying to qualify. Not saying it's right, wrong, or indifferent. Just what is.

And it is quite the proverbial cash cow.

Now, somebody please explain to me how it is that somebody finishing 24th makes 12 grand more than the guy who finished 23rd.

From what I uderstand that money is divided up among the team. Some drivers get more of a percentage than others. I watched a thing a month ago where they talked about the cost of racing and how the money is divided up.

Jr. is going to make big $$$ no matter how well he does.

the desparity in money for someone that finishes lower is also tied to sponsors as i understand it

mostly it comes down to the little sponsor decals that you see near the front tires... some teams have a lot of them... mostly for things like the bud pole award or gatorade victory lane or raybestos brake (break) of the race. all of these little awards get factored into the total purse. many of them, such as wix filters, moog, and clevite offer money just for having the tiny decals on the cars.
like i said, some have lots... but some only have a few. compare rusty wallaces car to someone like dale jarrett's car. wallace has one main vertical column of these decals, plus a few to the front of the tire.... while jarrett has 3 vertical columns plus two whole columns to the front of the tire. wallace chooses to have less because his main sponsor Miller Lite pays more for the sponsorship of the team to have less clutter on the car, and a more prominent view of the main sponsor.
teams have different reasons for doing (or not doing) the decals... most of it revolves around the money they provide.

hopefully that answers the question.

Wags, Mac is right. If you carry a sponsors sticker you get XX amount of $$. If you watch close sometimes you can pick up a new sticker from qualifying day to race day on some cars.
One example would be at a track where Canon was the offical camera of that race, they will have stickers on some of the cars. The next race they may not have that designation and so very few if any stickers will be present.

Heck no, everyday at the track I am looking over my shoulder to see if an El Camino with a cooler in the back full of sammiches has pulled up. As of yet no sammiches.

~ sniff...someone hand me a tissue.~

'bout damn time! Ditto the welcome, brother.

So Jeff, what you're saying is that these sponsor decals pay a driver more in prize money. Hmmm...so the better they finish, they get a bigger cut, or is it just a flat fee paid to the driver for pimping the sponsors product?

I don't get it. To me, this sponsor decal money should be totally separate from NASCAR posted prize money. It's seems really unfair that the scrub drivers and teams make less jack than someone who finished behind them.

I'm so cornfused.

And Q, am not a Ford guy and never will be. Carl Edwards happens to be a homie, who can also drive the shit outta' a race car.

You guy's keep waiting on them sammitches, though you'll prolly go hungry. If'n we ever were to hook up, here in KC, I'd be treating you to some SmokeHouse or Gates BBQ and you'd be forgetting about some lousy sammitch.

Wags, most of the time there is a flat fee for carrying the decal. Sometimes, not always with every sponsor but with some, you will get a bonus for landing a top 3- 5-10 finish. I have seen sponsors come out the day after the 500 and add their sticker to the car. Not sure what they pay for that but I am sure it is a hefty amount.

Also, if your interested, I have a gallery of some shots from Indy this year at Indy Gallery

Sorry no sexy shots of Danica.

I guess this means that you don't have any sexy shots of Jennifer the Watsons girl either.

What a bummer.

Oh hell yeah I remember that. I still have some of the Tony K's spice. I love that shit. One jar down and the second one is about half. I did see it localy on the shelf so it is available here.

Nope Wags no beaver shots of the Watson girl either. No upskirts, no bending over in a short dress, no down the shirt braless shots, nada, and if I did I wouldn't give em to you. Hell you'd wear out a wrist rubbin one out to her at lunch everyday.
