Nah, the Zeppelin was running out of fuel in 1979. JPJ was so sick of life on the road he was living apart from the rest of the band whilst on tour. Plant was battered beyond belief with a set of shattered vocal chords and a broken family life. Don't believe me? Check out boots from the 1980 tour. And Jimmy Page was such a junkie that he was practically useless in the studio during the In Through The Out Door sessions. Bohnam's passing made it easier, but make no mistake; Led Zeppelin was due for a breakup.

truer words were never spoken, although one could make an argument that Elvis started the ball rolling, but insofar as bands are concerned, the Beatles were the breakout group.....it's weird that back in those days, you were either a Beatles fan or a Stones fan, and generally speaking whichever group was your favorite, you generally didn't like the other group that much......me, I liked them both but I was a bigger Beatles fan.....good argument could be made that Zep was a better band (they were more commercially successful) as was Pink Floyd, but those bands reached their pinnacles in different eras than the stones, so I don't know that commercial success is the best measuring tool......the Stones were definitely a great band, but like buttsy said, there is no such thing as "best rock and roll band".....

you're just trolling now.....
the pixies made a total of five albums, only two of which ever had much success (Surfer Rosa and Doolittle).....personally, I couldn't stand that band as they seemed to be confused about what they were supposed to be...were they an indie rock, hard rock, or psychedelic rock group? or were they a surf rock group?

the sex pistols weren't great, Depeche Mode sucked, the Cure was a decent band although I'm not a big fan of goth music.....the smiths were seriously under appreciated, but not even in the discussion of great rock bands.....black sabbath, meh.....
get out, get out while there's still time

You can't have it both ways. You can't say the stones were great and DMode sucked but there is no such thing as best rrb. You can't say it's ok to have an A category (sucked) or that it is fine to have a B category (great) but not a C category brrb, as long as all three categories are predicated on the same premise. In this case the premise is Opinion. And the fact that one category has a finite inclusion group and the other two do not doesn't change anything. As long as the categories you are making are opinion based, the group size doesn't matter. I can't remember the name of the term used to describe this idea, but it was curriculum in some college logic course I took.

And you even got it backwards. The stones sucked and DMode was great. :hfal:

Why do they need to be pigeon-holed into one specific category? :?

I'm not a big Pixies fan, but props to them for not sticking to the same fucking formula for years and years like so many others.

Funny thing about aerosmith is that they likely would have remained extinct were it not for some hip hop sampling in the late 80s.

Both bands had one great song (for aero it was Janie's got a gun)
Both had 5 albums people droll over that sucked.
Both then followed that up with decades of suck that most people agree sucked.
Both have skinny, bedazzled, overrated singers.
They are fucking doppelgangers.

Jamie's got a gun was OK at best. Much of their 70s work was better.

Don't know enough about their discography to comment on point 2.

agreed on point 3.

yup to #4. great frontmen, but not great singers.

WTF is a doppleganger? I've heard the term, but never had enough interest to google it. guess i will have to now.

Steven and Mick are doppelgängers of each other. They look alike and act alike. I don't think it matters if one is older than the other and was then, by some definitions, the "original" version.

Their 70's work was repetitive, teeny bop, tripe. JGaG is the only thing they ever did that sounded good and meant something.

What the hell is wrong with your ears?

Vast majority of Rolling Stones = Utter shit

Vast majority of Aerosmith = Utter shit

On their best day, they were "slightly above average."

But I guess since Rolling Stone Magazine told you they were good, you bought in. Same reason the tone-deaf folk think U2 and anything associated with Sting was anything besides utter shit. Same reason anyone thought Bruce Springsteen was anything but utter shit.

Think what you will -- the Stones and Aerosmith still suck donkeyballs, and no amount of protest on your part will ever reverse their crimes against the world's tympanic membranes.

But I laughed when the Midget cites the worst song Aerosmith ever fouled the atmosphere with as a favorite.

Fuck, they're bad enough to make an ad for Apple with that shit.

It's interesting that if you look at the list of Rolling Stones hit sings (1963-2006), Gimme Shelter does not appear.

Dins is usually pretty analytical in his posts, so it surprises me that he goes on a stones suck tirade.

What is your measuring criteria?

Is it technical musicianship?

Pretty damn good place to start. Idiots like Wags can only understand basic music, and asking him to understand the technical side of music is not going to work. Wags and other just love the 3 chord shit, played really bad by groups like the Stones. Gimme Shelter is their only tune I like. If you have ever picked up an axe or instrument you get a better feeling for what it takes to put together decent music. Stones, LZ, fucking Kiss, and some others like that just slam a bunch of crap together as far as musical content and the sheep buy it.

Listen to the arrangements of musicians like The Doobie Bros, Tom Petty, Eric Clapton, Prince, Steve Miller, Vocal's like CSNY, Paul Rodgers, Jim Morrison. They can put together some amazing lead guitar work, and not just some C D G chord shit. Runs, slides, transitions all woven and mastered real well. Try and copy with the same detail and skill some of the riffs these guys put together. But comparing these types to LZ, the Stones is simply not possible.

Even Wags could put out some pretty basic C D G chord work with minimal instruction.

Stay with this until about 3:29 when Prince shreds it hard...and tell me the Stones are better than that.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6SFNW5F8K9Y

Try this one...3 guys on a stage making that good of sound...Jack Bruces bass work, Eric easily moving from rhythm to amazing fret board work. 4:02 and say the Stones can do that shit.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dCc00pX_pFA

Here is 3 more guys making some pretty damn technical music....even for Canadians.

Brilliant observation from the moron starting this shit thread, and calling the Rolling Stones the best rock band EVAH !!

The technical aspects of Mozart, Bach and Wapatodi are such a comparison to the bands I mentioned, and nothing more than gorilla dust for your Stones shit take.

There will be no snobbish disregard for Aerosmith in here. I won't have it. They get a lifetime pass for Toys In The Attic and Draw The Line. Same as Foreigner gets a pass for Head Games and Styx gets a pass for Grand Illusion, even though they later sold their souls for pop. Aerosmith went thru hell and came back with their soul intact. They are/were eternally worthy.

Journey and ZZ Top on the other hand, you may disregard.

The demise of ZZ Top as a band to be taken seriously can be traced to one thing. Shitty 80s synth pop electric drums.
