poptart, i need your advice!

Post by MgoBlue-LightSpecial »

I visited my grandmother in the hospital recently. She is not doing well. She's had a long and fulfilling life, but I believe her time is fast approaching. As I was on my way out and we said our goodbyes, she clenched my hand, looked me deeply in the eye and said, "You'll pray for me, right? I know you will."

Hand still clenched, I stared back at her like this:

Image

And said, "Absolutely."

Granted, it was complete bullshit. But who is going to deny their dying grandmother her last wish?

However, since that moment I have been reconsidering. I mean, what's the worst that can happen? Nothing? poptart, I seek your counsel at this time. Should I pray to the man above? And what am I even praying for anyway? A few more days on this earth? Or her acceptance into heaven?

BTW- to those who think I am dead set (pun not intended) against helping people on their way out, I recognize that is it done.
The difference is that it is not institutionalized/put into law. You better believe that doctors will juice up truly terminally ill patients
and send them on their way peacefully. No one should go out screaming in pain. Believing you can encode it into law and setting up
the Jack Kevorkian hospital unit is what I am against.

Must be a sizable estate involved. You would pray that your grandmother has left you some huge jack, and you can go on a massive gambling run when you get it. Make sure your ass is covered.

You don't need to pray, mgo. (Just don't tell g-ma). I believe any grandma of yours is going to heaven automatically.

Grandma Mgo: You'll pray for me, right? I know you will.

Mgo: Absolutely (but what am I praying for anyway?)

Keep the last words to your grandmother ---> which came off your lips.

"Absolutely."

MGO GrandMama: "I've left my entire estate to my cat Fluffy. You are entrusted to see that she lives in comfort for the rest of her feline life."

MGO: "Of course GrandMama, I'll take care of things for you."

MGO: "Here kitty, kitty. MGO has something for you"

The combinations and permutations of this scenario are endless.

What ails the world is a lack of genuine and accurate prayer.

Word, prayer, evangelism.

God gives His Word ---> believers hold onto that Word and meditate on it (prayer) ---> natural evangelism takes place, and people LIVE.

God's original blessing to man was to conquer the world, and have it live by God's grace.
Genesis 1:27,28.

When one believes in Jesus, who surely is the Christ, this original blessing is restored to you.

Jsc810 wrote:Sam Harris explains the futility
Sam Harris explains the futility? Of prayer? Sam Harris is your go-to for an opinion on the efficacy of prayer?
Asking Sam Harris if prayer is effective is like asking a cattle rancher if vegan diets are healthy, only worse. Because Sam Harris is an extreme nutcase preaching the religion of atheism. (Save it, if you're going to go into the whole "you obviously don't understand what atheism means" bit at this point.) He's only a teeny bit biased, don't you think?

That was an interesting debate, and the clip you showed was when Harris went off the rails and attacked Christianity using his New Atheism 101 Handbook. His reaction was emotional, and his comments were totally canned (albeit eloquently delivered). He was totally off-topic, only paying a tiny mention to the argument in question, and then not doing it suitably. He was not winning that debate, and it was obvious. But clearly, Jsc, you are easily convinced.

I find it interesting that the debate was about whether or not objective morals could exist without God. Especially since you played the "honor" card with regards to Mgo and his promise to his Grandmother. If God isn't listening to prayers, and prayer isn't effective, then who would even KNOW if Mgo didn't pray? Exactly no one, that's who.

Mgo: If you believe in the Bible, then you believe that genuine prayer does work. You should also know that it's not like asking for a shiny red bike and expecting one in your driveway when you wake up tomorrow. If your issue is that you don't know HOW to pray, but think it could be something you should do, just don't worry about the how. Just talk. It's not that hard.

If you're more like Jsc and make up your own religion as you go along, or if you don't believe in God, then it's probably not worthwhile to pray.

And if this whole post was simply a way to troll poptart, forget what I said. To you, Mgo... not to Jsc.

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!

BTW, the above story is 100% true. And while I do not believe that I stand to gain anything financially from my grandparents' passing, I must admit it churns my stomach a bit to know that apparently a sizable majority of their inheritance will be going to their church. Instead of passing their lifelong wealth to their three daughters and one son, it will be going to a corrupt organization built on lies and fairy tales. What a colossal waste. But hey, it's their money and they can do with it what they wish.

It's kinf of like that, assuming said father comes home drunk and starts speaking in tongues and someone crapped in dad's slippers.

Well...you don't. No doubt this Harris character has a dogmatic and fundamentalist point of view on the subject but he isn't praying to some non-god he doesn't believe in.

As an atheist myself, I have trouble understanding people like that. Does he quiver in scarcely supressed rage when small children leave milk and cookies out for Santa Claus on Christmas Eve? Does the custom of leaving a tooth under ones pillow send him into paroxysms of fury?

I don't believe in God but I don't give even the tiniest bit of shit that you do. It's a free country or at least it used to be anyway. Sure I'll mock Christ and Christians but that's just what I do.

Merry Christmas to you and yours.

Rack it mvscal.

As for me, I don't give a fuck if my wife takes my boy to church or celebrates Christmas. It is his job to figure that shit out for himself. And he will. I'll haul the xmas gear up the stairs for my wife. I'll even go to Christmas festivals in my hometown. Why? Because I fucking like to do that shit, not because I believe in fairy tale bullshit about virgin birth and mangers and wise men. I like the festivals because I see people from my town and I like the decorations because it makes my wife happy for a very little amount of work.

See, it is all about reason, and I'm still not acting like a dick. It is possible.
