1st Impressions on Black Dudes

Post by indyfrisco »

Was in the Louisville airport this morning at the gate waiting on a flight. Black dude sits next to me at the gate wearing a basketball jersey, basketball shorts, new pair of Jordan shoes and a Corona visor off to the side. Looked to me no older than 30 years old, prolly 25. Yeah, I stereotyped the dude. Thought hip-hop thug right off the bat.

His seat was next to mine on the plane as it turned out. Some old dude had window, he had center and I had aisle. Old dude strikes up a converstion with him. I'm reading my book but can't help but listen in. Black dude has worked for Humana for 20 years and is going down to Tampa for an audit. He's a CPA.

So, questions started to form in my mind. Why is a 40+ successful CPA wearing this outfit? Did not make sense to me why a successful educated 40+ black man was wearing this attire unless it was a sociological experiment. If so, I failed it. Old dude deboarded in Birmingham and it was just the black dude and I. We chatted a little but I got back to my book. I wish I asked him why he dressed like that but did not want to offend. Dude was smart and high class. Rack him...except for the clothes.

Just goes to show you can't judge the book by its cover. I still wonder on that guy. Hope he is on the return flight.

Pikkle and mv can weigh in with their slur blasts, but [South Park]I learned something today. Just because someone appears a thug don't make them one.[/South Park]

Still amazed why he dressed that way...

Well, for what it's worth, I was wearing shorts, tshirt, Astros cap and crocs. I wasn't expecting a dude of his education and status to be wearing a suit on a Sunday morning at 8 AM. Just surprised me he was wearing Streetball gear.

Interesting post. I can't answer the question. A shout out to any T1B members who are of Black African descent who might want to offer an opinion.
I know one thing. I'm not dressing up like "old Florida retired dude" with white shoes, socks, and belt with plaid pants and an International Orange Izod polo shirt just because others think it is what all old retired Florida dudes should wear.

Indy, you did judge a book by its cover. Apparently, it was too much for you accept that the guy wanted to travel casual, which is the standard mode nowadays. By way of comparison, take a look at some of the Harley Davidson MC groups where its members don the leather biker gear. A substantial number of them are professional folks.

Well, for what it's worth, you were wearing shorts, tshirt, Astros cap and crocs. And, no one judged you.

Boring42,

If you could read between the lines in my post, I regretted judging the dude and have made a personal decision which was not to judge the book by its cover. He is a solid dude and I discounted that based upon first impression. Call it an epiphany if you will.

Still wondering why he chose that attire, but if that's his thing, so be it. My perceptions have changed nonetheless. Why is that a bad thing?

When you make enough money.... you wear what you want.

Honestly, I think the guy does it just to get a reaction out of people like you, and your kinda folkways.

Black dude was probably sitting there thinking "great. I get stuck next to some white trash cracka reading a recipe book. probably a faggot"

well,, You just never know... :)

Fwiw Those sounded like damn comfortable clothes he was wearing. The angled cap? I gotta go with him trying to be "down" even if he's too old to be, but what the hell. There ain't no rules when it comes to dress casual. Especially on an airborne sardine can these days.

airborne sardine can
Spot on analogy.
When I fly the "airborne sardine can" it's long pants, (normal color) polo shirt, sox (gotta take shoes off and I'm not walking barefoot for TSA), and my usual LL Bean camp mocs.
Thanks for your perspective Bobby42 -- I was thinking you might opine on this. To paraphrase Dr.King--we should judge people by the content of their character and not what they are wearing ! First impressions might be spot off-- even pink polos and puka shells.

my first impression of black dudes:

cant keep grits out of beard
need a translator for white peeps (took me about 3 years)
are lazy when andy griffith is on
smoke alot of pot
watch alot of boxing on hbo
dig white women (hi mom)
have early health problems that whites and asians normally dont
piss and fart and shit with the bathroom door open
like paper pornography just like any 13 year old white boy would
keeps a gun under pillow
prefers beatings to be with a belt or switch. never the fist.
will eat anything. pigs feet, cow balls, spicey cheetoes
does not get along with mexicans. especially those in the local mafia

Interesting, I left Louisville on Saturday morning. The Humana folks were holding their meeting at the Seebach Hilton and what a crew of hotties they have working for them! We were there for four days and every time I walked into the hotel during the afternoon, their meeting room was rocking loud with music and singing. I know they weren't half asleep like I was in our meetings.

I'd have to say dude wearing the streetball gear and turned out being a CPA for Humana is not the norm.

Now, this is not really a first impression, but more like a "of course they are black" impression:

I was at school last week in the computer lab studying for an exam. There are signs posted everywhere saying that cell phones are to be turned to silent or off when in the computer lab and if someone needs to make a call, then they must leave the computer lab. I'm cramming for a test...I'm in a zone. All of the sudden, I hear a ring tone go off that was making the sound of a woman having an orgasm. The ring tone was funny at first but it broke my concentration no doubt. I turn around and it was a nog who's cell phone went off. The computer lab police walked over and told him to turn it off or he was going to have to leave.

He was like, "Aight...aight, dawg."

I start to concentrate again and then another ring tone goes off, but now it was some thuggish hip-hop music playing. I turn around and it's another nog sitting next to the first nog. The computer lab police did not act on the other ring tone. A few more minutes go by and now the ring tone with orgasmo woman starts going off again. And now the nogs are laffing it up. The computer lab police come over and ask him to shut off his phone or leave. Next, it was the thuggish hip-hop ring tone a couple minutes after. I'm pissed at this point and can see that the lab police are pussies. I turn around and tell this mother fucker:

"I can help you with that."

Nog: "Help wiff what?"
Me: "Learning how to read."
Nog: (blank look) "Read?"
Me: "Yeah, cus obviously you don't know how to read the rules."
Nog: "Yo man...you need to mind yo binness."
Me: "Well, you made it my business when you interrupted me..."

By this time, the computer lab police come over and finally kick the two nogs out, but of course, they did not go peacefully. They start jawing at the lab police with some sort of illiterate dialect. I couldn't quite make it out. Then the nogs start jawing at me and I just said, "Well....bye."

I'm sorry, but 9 times out of 10 they fit the stereotype.

Nice to see our health care dollars in action.

Because he is ashamed of his own success and would rather be thought of as a n...igger than an Uncle Tom. This is a perfect example of the thought processes that make n...iggers such pathetic fuck ups. You see the same things in public schools where making good grades is seen as being "white."
Or maybe the first thing said 40+ successful CPA was planning on doing when he touched down was to hit the hotel gym for a workout.

So let me see if I have this straight Indy.

Jersey + shorts + basketball shoes + visor = thuggish streetball gear

While...

t-shirt + shorts + crocs* + baseball hat = fine, normal and proper attire

Yep, nothing inherently racist about that.

Bwah! Rack Shine.

I was gonna start a mimic thread ...
Was in the Louisville airport this morning at the gate waiting on a flight. White dude sits next to me at the gate wearing sweatpants, a backward baseball cap and a fuckin pair of crocs on his feet. Looked to me no older than 30 years old, prolly 25. Yeah, I stereotyped the dude. Thought message-board posting dork right off the bat.

Seriously though, I think most people tend to stereotype strangers, be it good or bad, myself included. Hell, it's a part-time hobby of mine when I'm bored, especially at a place where one is stuck like the airport.

The fun part is when your stereotype is blown out of the water, which happened to me a few weeks ago.

There's this summer intern at work, who can't be more than 18. She's got dreadlocks, wears boots with a skirt nearly every day and uses patchouli as perfume. I've also overheard her say she's a vegetarian. So naturally, I'm thinking, "Yep, Sarah McLachlan-loving, man-hating hippie-chick."

One night working late, I'm outside the building, having a smoke, and she comes out and lights up a cig as well. We get to talking and it turns out she's got a scholarship to the New York Film Academy and will be starting there in the fall. Turns out she wants to be a movie director. She tells me, "I'll be staying near Greenwich Village ..."

Me: "That's cool. You should be able to fit right in. You seem like a free spirit."

Her: "No, there are too many freaks there. I'm probably too conservative for it. I know I don't look it, but I'm really pretty conservative."

Me:

I made amends by telling her I'd talk with my cousin who has a film degree from UCSB about any advice he may have for her.

Nothing like ASSuming. I'm sure we've all been there, at one time or another.
