Windows Virus Detection?

Post by MgoBlue-LightSpecial »

Just got internet at home yesterday. The moment I got up and running I started getting these warning messages sent from "Messenger". Here's an example of one:
Message from Windows to inform you about a virus detection on 6/4/2006 10:13:34AM

WARNING! A critical virus was found on your pc.

Follow these steps to fix your pc before it gets damaged:

1) Open Internet Explorer or your default browswer.
2) Type in the navigation bar: http://www.rclean.com
3) Download MicroAntivirus and install it on your pc.
4) Run MicroAntivirus to fix your system successfully.

Upon completion these warnings will STOP.

This pops up in a gray box about every 10-15 minutes. If I leave for awhile and come back, I'll have about 30 of these messages on my screen. Does anyone know what the hell this is? I've ran different virus scans and I've got nothin'. This computer was re-formatted, new operating system, new hard drive, etc, so I don't see how I have a virus. Problem is, if McAffee doesn't detect there's a problem, how the hell do I get rid of it?

YA gotta Turn off messenger service. It's being abused by outside websites, but its just spam shit that you're getting, they aren't finding problems in your computer, they're advertising their products. read here how to do it:

http://www.itc.virginia.edu/desktop/docs/messagepopup/

and get a firewall, dude. Zonealarm works for me, and its free.

I'm assuming you have XP home edition. here are the instructions for ending that shit:

Windows XP Home

1. Click Start-> Settings -> Control Panel
2. Click Performance and Maintenance
3. Click Administrative Tools
4. Double-click Services
5. Scroll down and highlight Messenger
6. Right-click the highlighted line and choose Properties
7. Click the STOP button
8. Select Disable or Manual in the Startup Type scroll bar
9. Click OK

If you have XP pro, it's a little different. See the link

It's messenger spam. Download this program and click the Disable Messenger button.
