25 Greatest Protest Songs...

Post by Invictus »

Was flipping the channels and finally saw something interesting and musical on a Viacom network. VH1, in an effort to undue some of the harm it parent company has done in the past several years with TRL and Survivor, aired this a few nights ago. Some of the choices on here suck but I liked the majority of their choices.

25 (What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love and Understanding
Elvis Costello
Good choice.
24 Rockin' in the Free World
Neil Young
Another excellent choice
23 Where Is the Love?
Black Eyed Peas
This is some of that MTV influence on the countdown. This song blows. A castoff from a shitty girl group (Wild Orchid) and a fay boy band lead singer and finally a great underground group gets some notice. Fuck this song and its sentiment.
22 Do They Know It's Christmas (Feed The World)
Band-Aid
Good choice
21 Nelson Mandela
The Specials
A great song which used to get heavy rotation on BET back when it was a good station to watch.
20 London Calling
The Clash
Great choice.
19 Fortunate Son
Creedence Clearwater Revival
18 Boom!
System of a Down
17 People Have the Power
Patti Smith
16 The Message
Grandmaster Flash
The most important record in hip hop history. (Fuck the Sugar Hill Gang)
15 Biko
Peter Gabriel
14 Freedom [Live]
Rage Against the Machine
13 Sun City
Artists United Against Apartheid
I love this song. As a young tyke in the ghetto, it made me do some research on Sun City. Silvio gets it.
12 Anarchy in the U.K.
The Sex Pistols
11 Get up, Stand Up
Bob Marley
RIP Bob and Peter
10 Born in the U.S.A.
Bruce Springsteen
A great song that most Americans at the time (including Ronnie Raygun) had no idea was a scathing indictment of the USA. Someone put up a thread in here about Bruce being overrated. I beg to differ. This song is genius.
9 Fight the Power
Public Enemy
No words needed for this one. A classic song. The video would have been too except for Tawanna Brawley showing up in it.
8 Sunday Bloody Sunday
U2
7 Ohio
Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young
6 Strange Fruit [#2]
Billie Holiday
It took me a few listens to actually get this song. I play it whenever I think I need a shock to my system. Gives me chills to listen to the words.
5 What's Going On
Marvin Gaye
His best. Song. Ever. Blows "Sexual Healing" and "Let's Get It On" away. After Stevie, the best artist Motown ever had. (Michael was better but his recent songs have taken him down a few notches)
4 Give Peace a Chance
John Lennon
One half of the greatest song writing duo ever. This song is part of a triumverate of great Lennnon protest songs with "Imagine" and "Happy Xmas-The War Is Over."
3 Say It Loud (I'm Black and I'm Proud), Pt. 1
James Brown
True soul power from a brother with texurized hair and a penchant for beating on women. I dig this joint though.
2 This Land Is Your Land
Woody Guthrie
I sang this song in kindergarten and grade school but had no idea the meaning behind it until just recently. (it was an answer to Irvin Berlin's "God Bless America.") Have gotten a new appreciation for it since then.
1 Blowin' in the Wind [Live]
Bob Dylan
Perfect selection.

Your thoughts people?

How Merle Haggard's "Okie from Muskogee" didn't make the list, just shows how biased these people truly are.
With all the horseshit around here, you'd think there'd be a pony somewhere.

THE OLD MAN WAS COVERED WITH TATTOOS AND SCARS
HE GOT SOME IN PRISON AND OTHERS IN BARS
THE REST HE GOT WORKING' ON OLD JUNK CARS
IN THE DAYTIME
THEY LOOKED LIKE TOMBSTONES IN OUR YARD
AND I NEVER SEEN HIM WHEN HE WASN'T TIRED AND MEAN
HE SOLD USED PARTS TO MAKE ENDS MEET
COVERED WITH GREASE FROM HIS HEAD TO HIS FEET
CUSSING' THE SWEAT AND THE TEXAS HEAT
AND skeeterz
AND THE NEIGHBORS SAID WE LIVED LIKE HICKS
BUT THEY BRUNG THEIR CARS FOR PA TO FIX ANYHOW
HE WAS VETERAN-PROUD, TRIED AND TRUE
HE'D FOUGHT TILL HIS HEART WAS BLACK AND BLUE
DIDN'T KNOW HOW HE'D MADE IT THROUGH THE HARD TIMES

HE BOUGHT OUR HOUSE ON THE G.I. BILL
BUT IT WASN'T WORTH ALL HE HAD TO KILL TO GET IT
HE DRANK PEARL IN A CAN AND JACK DANIELS BLACK
CHEWED TOBACCO FROM A MAIL POUCH SACK
HAD AN OLD DOG THAT WAS TRAINED TO ATTACK
SOMETIMES
HE'D GET DRUNK AND MEAN AS A RATTLESNAKE
AND THERE WASN'T TOO MUCH
THAT HE WOULD TAKE FROM A STRANGER

THERE WERE THIRTEEN KIDS AND A BUNCH OF DOGS
A HOUSE FULL OF CHICKENS AND A YARD FULL OF HOGS
I SPENT THE SUMMERTIME CUTTING' UP LOGS FOR THE WINTER
TRYING' LIKE THE DEVIL TO FIND THE LORD
WORKING' LIKE A mvscal FOR MY ROOM AND BOARD
COAL-BURIN' STOVE, NO NATURAL GAS
IF THAT AIN'T COUNTRY, I'LL KISS YOUR ASS

IF THAT AIN'T COUNTRY,
IT'LL HAIR LIP THE POPE
IF THAT AIN'T COUNTRY, IT'S A DAMN GOOD JOKE
I'VE SEEN THE GRAND OLE OPRY,
AND I'VE MET JOHNNY CASH
IF THAT AIN'T COUNTRY, I'LL KISS YOUR ASS

RECITATION:
MAMA SELLS EGGS AT A GROCERY STORE
MY OLDEST SISTER IS A FIRST-RATE WHORE
DAD SAYS SHE CAN'T COME HOME ANYMORE
AND HE MEANS IT
MA JUST SITS AND KEEPS HER SILENCE
SISTER, SHE LEFT 'CAUSE DAD GOT VIOLENT
AND HE KNOWS IT
MAMA SHE'S OLD FAR BEYOND HER TIME
FROM CHOPPING TOBACCO AND I'VE SEEN HER CRYING'
WHEN BLOOD STARTED FLOWING' FROM HER CALLOUSED HAND AND

IT HURT ME
SHE'D JUST KEEP WORKING' TRYING' TO HELP THE OLD MAN
TO THE END OF ONE ROW AND BACK AGAIN LIKE ALWAYS
SHE'S BEEN THROUGH HELL SINCE JUNIOR WENT TO JAIL
WHEN THE LIGHTS GO OUT SHE AIN'T NEVER FAILED
TO GET DOWN ON HER KNEES AND PRAY
BECAUSE SHE LOVES HIM
TOLD ALL THE NEIGHBORS HE WAS OFF IN THE WAR
FIGHTING' FOR FREEDOM,
HE'S GOOD TO THE CORE AND SHE'S PROUD
NOW OUR PLACE WAS A GRAVEYARD FOR AUTOMOBILES
AT THE END OF THE PORCH THERE WAS FOUR STACKS OF WHEELS
AND TIRES FOR SALE FOR A DOLLAR OR TWO
CASH

THERE WAS FIFTY HOLES IN AN OLD TIN ROOF
ME AND MY FAMILY WE WAS LIVING' PROOF
THE PEOPLE WHO FORGOT ABOUT POOR WHITE TRASH
AND IF THAT AIN'T COUNTRY, I'LL KISS YOUR ASS
IF THAT AIN'T COUNTRY, IT'LL HAIR LIP THE POPE
IF THAT AIN'T COUNTRY, IT'S A DAMN GOOD JOKE
I'VE SEEN THE GRAND OLE OPRY,
AND I'VE MET JOHNNY CASH
IF THAT AIN'T COUNTRY, I'LL KISS YOUR ASS
I'M THINKING TONIGHT OF MY BLUE EYES
CONCERNING THE GREAT SPECKLED BIRD
I DIDN'T KNOW GOD MADE HONKY-TONK ANGELS
AND WENT BACK TO THE WILD SIDE OF LIFE

Country dj's knows that I'm an outlaw.
They'd never come to see me in this dive.
Where bikers stare at cowboys,
Who are laughin' at the hippies,
Who are prayin they'll get out of here alive.

The loudmouth in the corners gettin' to me
Talkin 'bout my earrings and my hair.
I guess he ain't read the signs that say I've been to prison,
But someone ought to warn him
Before I knock him off his chair.

'Cause my long hair just can't cover up my redneck.
I've won every fight I've ever fought.
And I don't need some turkey telling me that I ain't country.
Sayin' I ain't worth the damned 'ol ticket that he bought.
'Cause I can sing all them songs about Texas
And I still do all the sad ones that I know.
They tell me I look like Merle Haggard
And sound a lot like David Allan Coe.

And the barmaid in the last town that we played in
Knew the words to every song I'd wrote.
She said Jimmy Rabbit turned her on to my last album
Just about the time the jukebox broke.
Yeah, Johnny Cash helped me get out of prison,
Long before Rodriga stole that goat.
I've been a rhinestone cowboy for so long I can't remember.
And I can do ya every song Hank Williams ever wrote.

And I can sing all them song about Texas
And I still do all the sad ones that I know.
I can't help it I look like Merle Haggard
And I sound a lot like David Allan Coe

But these country dj's all think I'm an outlaw.
They'd never come to see me in this dive
Wher bikers stare at cowboys
who are laughin' at the hippies
Who are prayin' they'll get out of here alive.
The loud mouth in the corner's gettin' to me,
Talkin 'bout my earrings and my hair.

Blowin' in the Wind is obviously an all time classic, but I really like a few other of Dylan's better.

for example,
The Times They Are A'Changin'
Rainy Day Women

Blowin In The Wind? shit. Here's a real Dylan protest song.

Masters of War
Come you masters of war
You that build all the guns
You that build the death planes
You that build the big bombs
You that hide behind walls
You that hide behind desks
I just want you to know
I can see through your masks

You that never done nothin'
But build to destroy
You play with my world
Like it's your little toy
You put a gun in my hand
And you hide from my eyes
And you turn and run farther
When the fast bullets fly

Like Judas of old
You lie and deceive
A world war can be won
You want me to believe
But I see through your eyes
And I see through your brain
Like I see through the water
That runs down my drain

You fasten the triggers
For the others to fire
Then you set back and watch
When the death count gets higher
You hide in your mansion
As young people's blood
Flows out of their bodies
And is buried in the mud

You've thrown the worst fear
That can ever be hurled
Fear to bring children
Into the world
For threatening my baby
Unborn and unnamed
You ain't worth the blood
That runs in your veins

How much do I know
To talk out of turn
You might say that I'm young
You might say I'm unlearned
But there's one thing I know
Though I'm younger than you
Even Jesus would never
Forgive what you do

Let me ask you one question
Is your money that good
Will it buy you forgiveness
Do you think that it could
I think you will find
When your death takes its toll
All the money you made
Will never buy back your soul

And I hope that you die
And your death'll come soon
I will follow your casket
In the pale afternoon
And I'll watch while you're lowered
Down to your deathbed
And I'll stand o'er your grave
'Til I'm sure that you're dead
