Michael McDonald

Post by Mikey »

I always thought Michael McDonald had one of the distinctive voices in popular music back when he was with the Doobies and doing backup on Steely Dan albums. I hear that his two recent CDs of Motown music are pretty good, although I don't have either. Any opinions?

He's performing at the Pala Casino here on March 18 and I just got two tickets for the performance. I did this partly because I'm interested in seeing Michael McDonald and also partly because of the location. This is a pretty new venue that's about a 20 minute drive from here. It takes an hour to get from here to downtown San Diego and even longer to get to Coor Amphitheater, where most of the "major" acts seem to go, which is way down by the border. Pala seems to be getting some pretty decent acts (George Carlin in March too) and it will be nice to have a sordid clambake to go a little closer to home.

I may have to order the two CDs from Amazon today.

McDonald is OK. I'm not a big fan, but I don't hate him either.

My brother-in-law thinks he's cheesy, and now, every time I hear him on the radio, I can't help think of my bro-in-law.

To the song "Yah Mo B There," he'll sing over the refrain, in perfect harmony, this:

I'm a cheeeeeeeese bag!!

He has that perfect "gravelly" but "not too gravelly" voice.

Brent Midland (sp?) of the 80's Dead reminded me of him in appearance and in vocals. Brent leaned more toward the "too gravelly".

LOL, RF.

The wife is really excited about this because we hardly ever get to go out without the kids, and also because the Minute By Minute album used to get played a lot when we were dating. Hopefully it will bring back some good romantic memories and we'll both get horny at the same time.

IN any case, any live performance is a treat these days. I'm sure he's got a good tight band with him.

McDonald has gone the Michael Bolton route, strip-mining the soul legacy.
He's got as much "Motown" in him as T.O. has humility. :P

worked with Steely Dan and grooved out the Doobie Brothers.
314 native.

I'll overlook the motown covers... for now.

Hall and Oates, you had some tight shit in the 80's. Don't go the covers route.

MM has a really good voice and also happens to be a cool cat to sit down and drink a beers with if you ever happen to say, meet him in a mexican restaurant/cantina something. No shit.

The covers are as minimally lame as they could be.

His MCI or Sprint (whatever the fuck it is) commericals are gay and cheesy and still, minimally lame. He is MM, after all.

Good guy, good voice.
