Shelter in Place PET

Post by Left Seater »

Mrs Seater and I are two plus weeks into the shelter in place order from Bexar County and the State of Texas. Seeing the writing on the wall we decided to head for my Mom’s house outside of Taos New Mexico. Today marks three weeks here. We will likely be here until mid May at least. We may relocate to Palm Springs at that point if CA gets their act together.

Some were discussing what to do during a shelter in place. For us it has been get outside and enjoy nature. Lots of hikes, evening walks, visiting old churches and cycling.

But just before this pandemic really kicked off in the US we were out in Vail/Beaver Creek and purchased a lot. Building a home there should begin in the next 3 years. Plan is to split our time between San Antonio and the Vail Valley once the house is built.

Here is the new lot.
Image

Shortly after arriving back in SA the decision was made to head to Nee Mexico. We stopped for the night in Amarillo and early the next morning visited the Cadillac Ranch.
Image

Later in the drive we stopped at the intersection of Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico. Shocker it was in the middle of a cattle ranch.
Image

Then it was onto New Mexico. This is Mom Seater’s view of the front yard.
Image
Image
When we arrived we decided to eat out every night u til restaurants closed for eat in. This was the margs on the last night at the Taos Inn.

Since Mama Seater’s place doesn’t have a fenced yard we take the hounds on a couple of long walks each day. Here Cooper is looking sadly at the early closure of Angel Fire Resort.
Image

Hannah wanted in on the action as well. Oh and that was the start of my playoff beard which is now the ‘Rona beard until I fly again. (Fly as pilot not as a pax.)
Image

The end of the first week we were here we decided to do a 9 mile hike in the Rio Grande Gorge. Lots less snow to worry about.

The next Sunday we went on a church driving tour to see some of the oldest churches in New Mexico.

After another week of working remotely we went up to the Taos Ski Valley for a snowshoe hike. This one was only a few miles as the dogs were struggling. Here are a few post hike photos.

The day after (Sunday) we decided to hike along the flat scrub near the Rio Grande Gorge. This was a nice 7 mile hike that the dogs loved.

Last Wednesday neither of us had much work to do so we knocked off at 2 and went to Red River. The plan was to do a 4 mile hike but the snow turned us back. We snapped a few photos anywho.

Yesterday we hiked Guadalupe Peak in BLM lands and it was awesome. 4.4 miles with 1890 elevation gain.
Image

Image

Today we hiked 6 miles along the west rim of the Rio Grande Gorge near the “high bridge”

During the work week we have had a few visitors to the compound. The pointer and this deer had a long stand off thru glass. Notice hi tail. You also can’t see his front leg but that is up pointing. Image

Early view of turkeys. Most of the snow is now gone.

Repainting Mama Seater’s welcome sign before re-staining.

I will update this as we explore more of Northern Nee Mexico over the next 6 weeks or so.

Nice PET and looks like a great area. That railroad bridge looks just like the one over the Crooked River Gorge near our place.

Enjoy being away from people.

As for what I have been doing, we have built a 24 x 16 deck. Still need to finish it off with some slats for the shade cloth. Need to put the rails on, sand and stain it. Trenched for the 6 zone sprinkler system and installing that. Rack my 62 year old ass for still digging and installing my own system.

I have 4 raised beds to fill with so then get potatoes and onions going, still early for much else at this altitude. I have two more piles of juniper limbs to burn, a gate to put on my second road, install the driveway alarm, and plant some more landscape plants.

My materials for my shop will be here this net week and the crew will install it. I will then wire it and set it up, I have a 71 Ford F 100 I need to get the engine out of and on the stand to rebuild.

The real estate photography business is pretty much dead right now, and nobody has money for consulting work. Residual sales of stock photography and video has dropped a bit. Despite the governments stay at home orders we are loading up and going out to the Harney Desert in SE Oregon about 175 miles for 4 days. We will be completely self contained with the 24 foot travel trailer, generator, 110 gallons of extra diesel, plenty of food, the usual load out of hand guns and a couple of long guns for self defense, ham radio gear. We are after nature pictures, agriculture operations and other content.

I need to get this years photography started and April is the start of that. Landscape, old buildings, drone footage I just shoot and archive and will then start processing as time allows. Looking for 20,000 images and 12 hours of video at least.

I have been going to town about once a week to go to Home Depot and the Farm Supply for materials. I buy whatever I need for the next week and that keeps me busy getting all these home projects done.

I have been hitting the local true value hardware store on a daily basis. I have about 3 hours of work a day for my company and then have been fixing up things around here. I have to say the selection isn’t the same as at the big box stores, but the knowledge is orders of magnitude better.

Let me know if you need any recommendations.
Otherwise,
Colt LE6920 (discontinued)
Colt SP6920
H&K VP 9
Glock 19
And for ultra conceal carry.
Sig sauer p365.

Honestly, there's unlimited options out there.
But, these you can trust with your life. Your families lives, and the lives of those you hold dear.

Yes Cooper is a German Shorthair Pointer. Hannah is a full grown 35 lb Boxer. Both are rescues.

Cooper was turned out because he was gun shy. Key word being was. Hannah was bred to be small as a bait dog for pit bull fighting rings. She was in rough shape when we got her, but she is an amazing dog today. She is half Cooper’s size and weight and completely runs his shit.

Me and Mrs. 88 haven’t had dogs since 2005. We adopted two boxer/lab mutt puppies from the pound when we were first married in 1990. They were two females from the same litter: Bootsie and Bailey. Bailey was about twice the size of Bootsie, but Bootsie ran the house. Bailey was Bootsie’s protector, though. We still miss them. We’ve been talking lately about getting another dog. We are older now, and it is difficult to know what might be a good choice. Cooper is a sharp looking dog. No offense to Hannah. She looks like a sweetie too.
If you have a fenced yard a GSP would do just fine. They are generally aloof towards dogs outside of their pack so that is really nice when out walking and having lunch outside. They will point out animals though and when in tracking mode can be very focused. As such a pinch collar works best we have found. They will run all day if you want, but are also lap dogs. Cooper has run a half marathon with Mrs Seater in the winter. In the heat of summer he limits out at about 5 miles running.

Pinch collars are for Amateurs and sadists, learn to train your dog properly and you won't need the PC. If you can't voice command a bird dog switch to Hamsters.

Germans are bird dogs not tracking dogs, they should not be run long distances like 13 miles all in one fell swoop, try a bloodhound or other tracking dog for that.

Being a Republican is a matter of liberty logic and life.

According to the FBI statistics on crime. Last year, a home gets broken into every 13 seconds!

If you don't own a firearm, you are not living in a reality based world.

A responsible human being who loves his family, owns a firearm, and is educated in every single aspect of that firearm.

His firearm is an extension of his own body. It's a tool to save lives. It's secured 24/7, either on him or elsewhere.

As you age, you either stay stupid, or you become wise.
Your choice.

This guy was in our yard last week.

He's been an occasional visitor for the past several years. We have a lot of lizards, which he seems to enjoy.

Looks like you have plenty of local food to harvest if need be.

Yeah we will be fine. I have both a bow and Remington 30.06.

It won’t ever come to that though.

The bears will be awake soon, though we don’t want those around the house.

Usually moons that big are tiny dots when photographed, but last night's moon actually showed up large in photos. I don't know why that is. Perhaps a photographer can explain.

Those are gorgeous photos of the sky and mountains. Twilight and dawn in New Mexico are the reason why it's a land of enchantment, utterly otherworldly.

Does your wife know you're taking ass shots of her for the boys?
