Don't expect to see many facts here, either. I'm just speculating based on the political landscape and human nature.

I consider Trump to be at the far right of electable Republican presidential candidates and that he'll run essentially unopposed by anyone in the GOP. His loyal base is what I would consider to be extremists, and will back him no matter what he says or does. They actually like him and get excited over the prospect of his re-election, even if much of what they like about him is driven by their disdain for Democrats. Sanders and Warren are his counterparts on the extreme left end of the spectrum, with Biden closer to the center.

I don't know what the exact numbers are, but my guess is that there are roughly as many extremists on each side of the spectrum such that there will be a relatively small group of loyal Democrats who will be excited by either Warren or Sanders as the nominee. The fight, as always, will be for those in the center, and there are large numbers of voters in both parties there. Biden is unpredictable enough as far as age, health, baggage, and foot-in-mouth disease to lose the nomination. If he does, I just don't see there being high levels of excitement among registered Democrats for either Warren or Sanders other than on the fringe. The driving force behind voting Democrat will be "anyone but Trump" rather than truly believing the nominee will make a great President. Conversely, the battle cry on the right will be along the lines of "Trump may not be all that great, but he's better than any Socialist (read: Democrat)." You see that all the time here on the board, which is a microcosm (albeit a pretty twisted one) of the general populace.

If Biden survives the primaries, he probably has the best shot at winning, especially if he's smart enough to use Obama's campaign playbook. Hillary made the fatal mistake of eschewing it, which was idiotic. Unlike any of the current crop of Democratic hopefuls, Obama was loved by MANY Democratic voters, and of course was hated with equal (or greater) vigor by the right. But love him or hate him, one thing that can't be denied is that he was a master campaigner, using analytics, data, and modern technology better than anyone in both of his successful campaigns. He was the Billy Beane of politics. Biden's ties to Obama can only help him, and he would be wise, imo, to align himself as closely to his former boss as possible, rather than distance himself as Hillary did. If he fails to do so, he will suffer the same fate as Hillary.

In the end, though, I expect re-election, and believe the impeachment process will do more to make the right circle the wagons and increase support for Trump than it will to help the Democrats. I frankly think we're screwed no matter who gets elected. No one who should be President is dumb enough to run.

You play the game to win within the confines of the rules, which in the case of general elections, means you have to win the electoral vote. Popular vote doesn't mean shit. I don't have to like it nor do you, but them's the rules. Hillary was so confident more people would vote for her (and she was right) that she failed to win the states she needed to win and should have fairly easily won because she neglected MN & WI during her campaign (despite the fact she disputes this), although she did put some effort into PA; Trump simply outplayed her in the state's rural communities. She assumed she had them in the bag and left it to chance that she'd win them. You can bet your ass Obama would never have taken those chances, and would have applied sufficient face time and resources to the states he HAD to win to ensure victory, which is exactly what he did. Read up on the minutiae of Obama's campaigns. Fascinating stuff, and failing to emulate what he did is what cost Hillary the election.

Everything is relative. If you look at just the Democratic presidential candidates who have a realistic shot at nomination, who among them are further left than Sanders or Warren? Sure, in the overall scheme of things, they may be somewhat centrist. If they weren't, they'd be unelectable. Conservatives would also say that Trump isn't a right-wing extremist, and they are right as far as fiscal policy goes. Perception is everything; Sanders & Warren are perceived to be relatively far left, even if by strict definition or your cute little diagrams they are not.
