Dale Hunter up to old tricks as coach

Former NHL player Hunter suspended by OHL

Friday, January 21, 2005

(01-21) 14:48 PST TORONTO (AP) --

Former NHL tough guy Dale Hunter was suspended indefinitely Friday as coach of the Ontario Hockey League's London Knights for making mocking gestures toward game officials.

Hunter circled his fingers around his eyes, as if wearing glasses, while looking at referee Joel Washkurak during Thursday night's game in Peterborough. He was ejected with 8:43 remaining.

Hunter, the second-most penalized player in NHL history, was suspended by the OHL pending a hearing Tuesday. Peterborough won 6-2 in a game that included a brawl in the second period.

Knights forward Jordan Foreman was suspended for a minimum of three games for manhandling a linesman. London goaltender Adam Dennis and forward Kelly Thomson and Petes goaltender Jeff MacDougald and forward Patrick Kaleta received automatic two-game suspensions for fighting on the same stoppage of play.

A 19-year NHL veteran, Hunter was suspended for four games at the start of the OHL season after sarcastically applauding a referee in one preseason game and also because a player left the bench with the game in progress to initiate a fight in another.

Hunter, also the president of the Knights, retired from the NHL after the 1998-99 season with 3,565 penalty minutes. He trailed only Dave "Tiger" Williams, who finished his career with a record 3,966.
It kills me how they call him "tough guy" in the opening sentence. A tough guy drops the gloves and fights a lot and honors "the code". Dale Hunter was a cheap shot artist who hit guys after they scored. Those refs better not turn their back on him. Or better yet they should invite him to throw down--I'm sure he'd pick up a stick and start swinging it.

I'll second that RACK! He was a tough dude but he definitely skated the fine line between rough and dirty.

Some guys can never give it up. Anyone remember Scott Metcalfe? Rochester Americans all-time PIM leader.
This from a local beer league:

Monday Shrek & Co. # 5 Scott Metcalfe Match Pen. Suspended until Hearing
Blue Boyz #12 Matt Wambach Match Pen. Suspended until Hearing

I'll echo STA's thoughts.
