I was surprised that the Selma to Montgomery trip is 52 miles. Somehow I thought they walked way less. The signs along the road that show where they camped and whatnot were very interesting. Mostly crap about which racist POS didn’t want them staying on their land for a night. Montgomery has a Capybara at their zoo plus Rosa Parks and Freedom Riders museums so it’s not all bad, but yeah Selma is the bridge to take a pic and leave. Walmart on the edge of town didn’t help the DT I’m sure.

You’ve made that drive. Interesting. The historical markers do tell a fascinating story. I assume the Viola Liuzo (spelling?) marker is still there.

Parts of that stretch of road are beautiful rolling farmland, but too much of it is nasty neglected property.

I used to enjoy riding my motorcycle on back roads (Hwy 14) to Selma to photograph the beautiful churches and homes. There’s an old moss-draped cemetery that had a monument to Nathan Bedford Forrest…lotsa turmoil over that for many years.

But Selma has deteriorated badly. Very dangerous and very dilapidated these days.

Liuzzo, but yeah it’s still there. Her name is also on the Maya Lin piece (the lady who also did the Vietnam Vet wall in DC) in Montgomery. I had never learned of her till we went to Alabama, so yeah travel is good.


Update: Dude in the water, who has been dubbed Aquamayne and (my personal fav) Scuba Gooding Jr. had his cashapp crashed when people found it and sent him “too much” money.

I like the part about seven seconds in when the dock worker guy has just been attacked, he throws his hat about 20 feet in the air and is, like,”let’s go muthafucka.”

Yeah he sort of gets piled on after that, but still cool.

There’s a fake humorous Facebook page for Vasser’s convenience store in Selma. Apparently the owner of that store cost himself and his family their livelihood via his actions in Montgomery the other day.

I think the phenomenon you are describing is called progress. Again if you want to give an example I would be happy to explain why it isn’t funny or is no longer funny.
