Wimbledon Semi-finals

M. Berrettini vs. H. Hurkacz

N. Djokovic vs. D. Shapovalov

Djokovic is the heavy favorite to win the tournament.
He is a five-time Wimbledon champion -- and he has won 19 majors (Nadal and Federer each have 20).

None of the other blokes have ever even been in a major final, let alone win one.

I'll call Berrettini over Hurkacz in 5 sets.
Both guys have big games.
Federer looked his age in losing to Hurkacz, btw.
I think this match is a coin flip.

Shapovalov is not consistent enough to beat Djoker, imo.
Djoker in 4.

I do hope Shapovalov treats us to at least a couple of his hilarious jump backhands. :)

Get your strawberries and cream ready!

WTF?

Has anyone ever had anything like that?

Looks pretty effective.

I wonder if his thinking is that by getting higher, he’s effectively making the ball lower and can have move upswing and better topspin.

LOL
I do that shot all the time. Unlike him, there's no strategy with me. I'm just flailing.

That shot was almost never seen in past eras, but now with the strength of the players and the racquet technology, some guys are pulling it off.
Shapovalov does it better than anyone else I've seen.
But it still is a rarity.

The shot is really only able to be used in a situation where the opponent has hit a ball that is floating with very little pace.
The jump is a power source, and he corkscrews his body and rips the hell out of it when he times it right.
As you can see, he hits some rifle shots with it.

It is a crowd pleasing shot, for sure.

Seems to me that you need to have your feet planted to get any advantage from body turn.

But no arguing the fact that he hits some bullets with it.

Berrettini and Djokovic are through to the final.

Jump backhand sent home.

Not a tennis fan, especially as it is on TV. It is really amazing to see in person. When I was working on the Event Staff at FSW Arena here, we worked a charity tennis tournament/show. Among the players were the Bryan brothers. Was very entertaining and saw some amazing athleticism.

The Bryan bothers are arguably the 2nd best doubles duo ever.

Who is the greatest?

John McEnroe and -----> whoever his partner was. :)

Was very often Peter Fleming. No slouch himself in doubles.

I like Djokovic in the final tomorrow.

Berrettini is 10 years younger, and he does have some firepower, but lack of consistency will do him in, imo.

The modified grass surface they are now using at Wimbledon very well suits Djokovic' game.

He'll probably win it in straight sets. It might go 4 sets if Berrettini can string some shots together and make it happen.

Djoker wins major #20!

Well, technically, it’s a stadium.

Like how we're not supposed to call it the British Open, right?

Right. But Suckaholic's point, I think, is that Wimbledon's official name is "The Championships, Wimbledon" or some shit like that.

Wimbledon is a district and town of southwest London.

"The Championships" are played at The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club.

Centre Court is the main court at The Championships.

I like how Wimbledon enforces the virgin white dress code for these whores. When that Ashleigh Barty chick won match point she went to a prolonged squat and you could see her pantied crotch. I imagined that was our wedding night and she was assuming the position to bring me gratification.

It took all my willpower to keep from dumping my weekend load on that match point. Good stuff!

This men's final has been great so far. I'm amazed with how these guys can consistently place their serves near the elbows on the court.

The final was just about what I expected.

Berrettini came up with the goods to eek out the first set, but he could not sustain what it takes to get past Djokovic over five sets.

Major props to the Djoker for claiming his 6th Wimbledon title.

This sets up a very dramatic situation at the U.S. Open.

If Djokovic can come through, he will win the calendar grand slam, which has been done just three times.
D. Budge in 1938, R. Laver in 1962, and R. Laver in 1969.

A U.S. Open win by Djoker would also move him past Nadal and Federer on the all-time slam list.
All of them have 20 major wins right now.

During the last few years of Pete Sampras' career there was tremendous focus on his quest to surpass Roy Emerson's major championship record, which was 12.
Sampras won #13, then tacked on #14, and was widely heralded as perhaps the greatest player of all-time.

It has been stunning to watch three players in the very next generation rocket past Pete's 14 -- and take their totals all the way up to 20.

60 of the past 71 grand slam tournaments have been won by Nadal, Federer, or Djokovic.
Unreal.

Or to put it another way, there is little to no competition in the men’s game outside of three players.

Glad you enjoy it though. Tennis needs something new to bring me back. But the overall number are up from the abysmal early 2000s.

An argument can be made that your analysis is correct.

Are they that great or have they feasted on a weak field?

Or some of both?
