Im looking to expand my Gangsta Rap library. NWA/Easy E/Dr.Dre/IceCube, Too Short, is pretty much all that I have/had for the last 15 years.

Who else would you recommend?

Ice-T Iceberg. Power is really good, too.

2 Pac, Digital Underground (where 2 Pac got his start), Ice-T, Biggie Smalls (AKA B.I.G), Cypress Hill, Naughty By Nature, Big Daddy Kane...

That should keep you going for a while with thug rap. If you want some millitant shit that isn't all bitches and hos, take a listen to KRS1, Eric B and Rakim and Public Enemy for starters.

If they're "rappers," how exactly do they "rock?"

I'll give you that Big Daddy, Digital Underground and Naughty By Nature ain't your typical "gangsta" fare. I threw them in for flavor and becasue they had a profound influence on the sounds of the time.

But how the fuck is Cypress Hill not gangsta? Sure, they didn't go the mysogenistic route, but they had all the beats, guns, homophobia and blunt smoking you could ask for. Not to mention the haytin on the cops thing down cold.

Same goes for BIG. It wasn't his fault his producer had the flow of a spastic chimp on mollassas. Besides, the motherfucker got killed in a drive by. How much more gangsta can you get? ;)

Don't get me started on 2 Pac. I guess you either love him or hate him. I personaly think no thug rapper in history ever could ryhme as hard as 2 Pac while still allowing his true vulnerability to come through.
Reflected and disrespected, plus I'm rejected
You're just another rapper, who swears he's makin records
That's what they said - whenever I would walk by
I never tripped though - always kept my head up high
Eventually, I knew that I would find my way
After the darkest night, always comes a brighter day
And some would say, that turned away is all you'll get
I just said, "bet," and never let 'em see me sweat
Cause in the end, I knew that I would have it all
while non-believers, were prayin for my downfall
And some would call, and tell me that they wish me well
but in my heart, I'm knowin that they wish me hell
Yo get a real job, rappin doesn't pay the rent
I hate the studio cause that's where all my money went
Never surrender, it's all about the faith you've got
Don't ever stop, just push it til you hit the top
And if you drop, at least you know you gave your all
Be true to you, and that way you can never fall
But beware, these backstabbers ain't no joke
Just like a rope, they hang on you until you're broke
And when you're broke, they move onto the next dope
And there you are, can't even pay your car, nope
And when you reminisce, thinkin how you got dissed
remember how it felt, and then remember this
Be true to you, believe that there's no one bigger
Cause they can all suck dick - it's strictly for my niggaz
It ain't Dickens, Shelly or Keats. But that's all been said before. Right? ;)

I'm sorry for forgetting the Geto Boys. That was unforgivable.

Peace, we out.

I guess I always considered Gangsta rap to be a SoCal thing.
BSmack wrote: It wasn't his fault his producer had the flow of a spastic chimp on mollassas.
beautiful.

Don't get me started on 2 Pac.
I won't. I guess I don't look to rap music to hear a fake thug / person-who-never-got-his-shit-attitude-put-in-check cry about his pampereed life. Some people love his "vulnerability". I found it to be whining. He was more interested in themes most often found at coffee house open mic nights.

No way you're going to tell me 2Pac is a better rapper than Nas.

It ain't Dickens, Shelly or Keats.
Its the shit you find in a high school journal.

If I can make the same sound by pushing one fucking button on a Casiotone, and giving some hoodrat $10 worth of drugs, it's not "music." Never has been, never will be.

That being said, Bace is the best mod this board could ever have. I love his discretion with our posts and value his opinion on all matters pertaining to the music forum.

In fact, I bet his record collection would give me erections.

Some of us were listening to Pac way before he signed with Death Row and started getting MTV airplay. If all you ever heard of Tupac was his Dear Momma raps, then I can understand why you hate him.

Bace,

I'm not going to say that Tupac was a "better" rapper than Nas. I'm not one of those who claims Tupac was the "best ever". He was a hell of a rapper who was in the process of selling out just as he got whacked. But he wasn't all that the idiots putting his face on t-shirts and graffiti art make him out to be.

BTW: I'll be the first to say I'm not an authority on [covers dins ears]rap music[/covers dins ears], but I know what I like. I liked Pac before he got run on MTV and I still think he had a flow and a sound better than most rappers.

I'm going to use the shutyomouth defense... If it's so easy, why don't you do it? From the sound of your post you could be the next Lil Jon with hardly any effort. Sounds like a good way to make a few easy million.

Sorry I can't offer anything to this thread. I don't listen to "gangsta" rap. I like my hip hop a little more literate. Bustin' flows about Dewey Decimal and shit.

Because a mod abused his powers to give Bace all those props. I thought the proper use of grammar would tip everyone off.

But me and dinsenthal are cool. We can abuse each other like 8 year olds finding themselves in a dark far-away closet.

You needed a comma between "our" and "posts."

You needed an apostrophe followed by two instances of the letter "L" after "I."

I'm not an authority either. Like you, I'm just expressing my opinions thinking it may bring about discussion. My hip-hop interest comes more from finding old jazz breaks and records in dusty crates. My interest will always be more with the DJ and less with the rapper. That being said, I've been exposed to plenty and formulated an opnion from that.

I liked Pac before he got run on MTV and I still think he had a flow and a sound better than most rappers.
Flow I'll give you. When faced with Biggie's fat tongue taking up most of his mouf, Tupac had flow. Still I'd rather have anyone else's non-teenjournal rhymes to go with that flow.

Im strictly looking for the bitches and ho type raps. I have some KRS1, Eric B and Rakim, Public Enemy along with all of Run DMC, Beasties, and Eminem. I used to have some Ice T, and BDK, and will be replacing those. Also have a few tunes from ICP.

Out all the gangsta shit, Easy E has to be my favorite. Dude put out some funny stuff. War - rapping about getting pussy to the theme from Green Acres!

Well, for starters, pick up some of the other Ruthless Records stuff from the same era like Above The Law and The DOC. Compton's Most Wanted and DJ Quik were also pretty nice back in the late 80s/early 90s. Also, Penthouse Players Clique was pretty tight. Hope that helps...

And I'm a singer who knows just how hard it is to write lyrics that flow with the music. I will also admit that Tupac was one of the first rappers I listened to back in the late early 90s when I first started becomming aware of hip hop. So maybe I'm just a sentimental old dog.

If you want some real gangsta shit, peep:
Kid Frost
Ice Cube first three albums only
Too Short
Willie D "Controversy"

Like Back Row, Middle, I also considered "Gangsta Rap" to be a predominately West Coast thing so I don't know if Mobb Deep would be in this category.
