Imagine if you had dropped a thousand bucks on it a few years back. You could retire.

I still don't see how the whole thing got off the ground. What backs it? Who backs it?

How long do you figure before it collapses? If it does.

Are there people out there dumb enough to get in substantially at 10 grand a bit?

People who made money did so back when mining was cheaper relative to power consumption. The Chinks have entire industrial parks dedicated to ASIC farms.

Bitcoin is the ONLY example in the entire history of economics that perfectly exemplifies Marx's "Labour Theory of Value"...
e.g. the value of any product or service is directly proportional to the resource and effort expended in it's creation.
Essentially, a computer hashes an encrypted mathematical equation that may take even high-end machines hours or days to complete. Theoretically (and in years previous, in practice) it was possible to manufacture or "mine" your own Bitcoins (or Dogecoins...or Litecoin...etc...) on your laptop or home computer...although the cost of running a computer to run mathematical routines has far exceeded the gain in whatever coins you mine.

If your portfolio lost 36K in the 8 years AFTER the market shit itself, you need to find someone else to manage it. Through the Obama years, after the crash, the market has been on a fairly steady climb, partly because it had no other way to go after the crash and partly because it was the only place to put your money if you didn't want to settle for the ridiculously low returns CDs were paying.

I honestly don't know what mine has done over this period as I find that looking at it month to month just gives me a headache.
