Defining Keith Moon

Post by War Wagon »

This thread won't be about comparing him to Bonzo. That can't be done.

No, it will be about the sheer joy he had playing with an epic group of blokes.

Bloody good stuff and I think anyone who watches might agree.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Abominable_Dr._Phibes

"The Abominable Dr. Phibes is a 1971 British horror film starring Vincent Price and American actor Joseph Cotten.
It is one of the last things Keith Moon of The Who did, just prior to his death from an overdose of Heminevrin in 1978 was to watch the film."

I'm right here with Wags on Moon. The best drummer ever. No. But one of the single most energetic and enthusiastic drummers ever, yes. Plus, one of the most fun to watch. There is a reason the Rolling Stones didn't originally broadcast this episode of Rock and Roll Circus, their own show. The Who simply blew them off stage.

Here is "A Quick On While He's Away". Moon was having a ball.

I remember that PW. One odd thing about that clip I have never been able to figure out or have answered. Any idea what the glittery, watery looking stuff splashing up off of his cymbals toward the end was? Or how he got it there at that point? Cool effect whatever it is.

The Who a quick one
The best thing about that video is Moon, the la la la la, and Peter Townshend strumming are elementary. I know this thread isn't about who is the best drummer, & certainly Moon was excellent.....

....but the idea of Cream, was to make up a band with the best musicians of the time. Clapton was thought of as the best guitarist until Jimmy Hendrix came along. Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker were also very highly regarded, Baker in particular by Hendrix.

Here's another, Michael Shrieve, then of Santana. The percussion set them apart as much as Carlos guitar (which improved over time).

No la la la, or humming & strumming.

Moon didn't care about time, he made his own up. Bonham had more discipline. I'll guess that Bonham had his epiphany watching Joe Morello in 1963 and Moon worshipped Krupa.

Drunkards who are nagged to stop drinking all too often end up as wife beaters too unfortunately.

No time for this thread yesterday but I can't wait to get home and watch/listen to that tonight.

btw, The Who were supposed to play here tonight but had to postpone the show because Daltry lost his voice.

Go figure.

The cheapest seat for that show was at least $200 to sit in the rafters.

If that was true they would have shut it down in 97.

That was Neil Schon when he played on Santana III.

The last question I have about a quick one is, how did Moon acquire one of Scott Hamilton's outfits? Dude was ready for the Ice Capades.....

Must be because the Sugar Ray Leonard vs Mavin Hagler fight was sold out....

Interesting, I think I see some of Krupa's style in Moon's act.

Well worth the wait, thanks to all who chimed in.

No denying that Bonzo had better chops and pedigree, but Moon was probably more fun to share a pint with.

That's a guess, I just want Keith to get his props and think he has.

Moon was the worst kind of guy to drink with. He was utterly unpredictable and undependable. Seriously, how many people have run over their own chauffeur? If I'm getting buzzed to the gills, I want people I can trust not to kill me drinking with me.

Well Joe in PB's got a bee in his bonnet about Moon. All's fair, Bonham sucks just cause he was Zeppelin.

Not really, just making a few observations/cracks. I did watch the 2nd Krupa video in its entirety, found it interesting and picked up a little more history. For me, its good stuff.

Gene Krupa was the out of control rock drummer 20 years before rock was invented. Dude was getting busted for dope smoking in the 40s.
