Is it Blues? Or Blues-Rock? Or Rockin' Blues? Or Blues-tinged Rock?

Or any variation on the same old shit all your music sounds like?

Ann Wilson is probably the best rock singer ever, regardless of gender.

This topic ties into one I recently discussed IRL, regarding "great singers who sing shit music." Natalie Merchant has about the coolest voice I've ever heard, and uses it to sing some of the most boring, uninspired crap ever.

Non-rock singers: Karen Carpenter, Dido, Adele are all really good, but not really my kind of music.

Didn't Dido record a song called "White Flag"?

Been digging Sharon Van Etten's new album quite a bit since a hipster friend turned me on to it. I have a definite weakness for melancholy indie folk.

But my favorite female singer is and always will be Grace Perry. <swoon>

First time I've seen/heard this. Nice.

She needed something to supplement that one other song she had that she also didn't write. She kind of owes a lot to those 2/3rds gay brothers who decided their hit song on their monster album would sound better with a chick singing.

Lots of good choices pointed out already, I'll add an obvious omission.

Etta James

Amy Winehouse early on, before the alcohol, drugs, & industry got her.

Lou Ann Barton

Danielle Schnebelen formerly of Trampled Under Foot

The band, all siblings, broke up last November...bummer. Nick who plays the guitar also sang about half the songs, which made for a nice balance.

i've been checking out Jam in Van on Youtube. Nicki Bluhm & the Gramblers caught my ear. I don't really consider myself a folk or country music guy, but I find them quite good. These days for me, genre is not as important as talent.

Yeah, something about her. Absolutely smoking.

What a fukking waste.

My list

Aretha- the queen of soul. most powerful voice ever
Patsy Cline-beautiful voice. Had she not died, i think she would have crossed over into pop music and done well
Ann Wilson-you don't really wanna argue with dins....do you?
Janis Joplin- best chick blues singer. maybe best blues singer period.
Cindy Lauper- when she wants to use it, she really has a nice vioce
Wynona - wife dragged me to see her. she really does have a powerful voice. bitch can sing soul like no other white girl. wish she would do some aretha covers
you're gonna laugh at this one......madonna. listen to her on the dick tracy soundtrack. bitch can sing.

Cold Blood - one of the great unheralded bands of the early 70s Bay Area.

Saw them a couple of times when I was in HS and had a serious 16 year old crush on Lydia Pense.
People have said that she was a Janis knockoff, but she had a special talent of her own. A bit more funk / R&B oriented than Janis.

Frost Amphitheater in 1971. I was at this show.

Cold Blood was definitely funkier than Janis, & sounded pretty good. I don't believe I've heard of them before Mikey.

Early Janis.
