I don't disagree with you on Quentin but Greinke also challenged him after he hit him and, for some reason, lowered his shoulder to a charging bull of 235+ lbs. I hope it knocked the stupid out of Zack too.

I watched the entire game, I say there was equal blame to go around. Obviously there was past history involved in this case. The game situation didn't seem to indicate that Greinke would try to hit him in there, 1 out - full count - runner on first - one run game in the 6th, but up to that point Zach was dealing. He had been painting the black and keeping everything low all night, to all of a of sudden let one fly up and in seemed a bit on purpose based on how he had been throwing up to that point. Carlos made a step to the mound and stared him down then Greinke appeared to let fly an F-bomb or something while dropping his glove and took on a "challenging" stance. Not smart on his part, what being 6' 170 or so versus a guy 6-4 230 .

Kemp is the idiot for continuing on off the field on the way to the parking lot.

Greinke knew he was going to get his ass beat, but what was he supposed to do, run like a bitch? That would've had worse long term ramifications than breaking your collar bone.

Suffice it to say, LA didn't sign Zack to all that money to cure cancer - but standing there to absorb the brunt of a 240 lb. outfielder was pure rocket surgery...

Watch the pitch sequence again. Greinke's previous pitch was low/outside on purpose. He was setting up to bust Quentin inside and the pitch sailed on him. As you said, given the same situation, there was no way Greinke was choosing that particular time to hit Quentin.

Correction on the situation, there were no outs and bases empty.

Just another theory. With a full count, Grienke probably didn't want to put anything close that the only hitter in the Padres lineup could hurt him with a long ball. So why not just put one of the slowest Padres on base to set up an easy double play with anything hit on the ground by subsequent batters. So instead of throwing a ball outside he decided to go high and tight thinking if he plunks him, "oh well". Well, that didn't work out to well for him. Just a different point of view.

it didn't look to me like he was throwing at him. It was a tailing fastball that Quentin made no effort to avoid, just like always. Dude has been hit like 115 times in his MLB career, that has to be some record. It's like he goes up there daring a pitcher to hit him, while wearing armor that would deflect a bazooka.

But after further review, I don't know what Zack said to him that made him charge, but he said something that pissed him off. That was unnecessary. If he just shuts his stupid mouth, he's probably not nursing a broken clavicle for the next 6-8 weeks.

Hopefully, he comes back good as ever but you never know how a pitcher is going to be after an injury like that. The fact it wasn't his throwing shoulder helps, but he was a pretty decent hitter and that may hurt his swing.
