So, Van

Post by Dinsdale »

It seems your motley crew of bitches have a beatdown coming. Last year isn't sitting too well around thse parts.

And what a beatdown it will be.

I'll give you the rundown, so you don't have to suffer through watching it:

First quarter, your guys try to hang. Execute some scripted plays, get some yards, maybe an early tuddy/FG.

Then, it all goes bad. Like most of the other opponents this year, you're so terrified of the Mamba, you focus way too much on him not beating you by himself... and you'll make the same mistake every other DC has -- probably do something really dumb, like use a safety as a spy on him... and you're done. With your DE unblocked and left in the backfield, combined with a safety (LB... whatever) locked in on DAT... playing 9-on-10 won't end well for you. You'll buy right into the scheme, and downfield we'll go... or just run through the hole your man-down leaves.

Your recievers? They're good... very good. They'll get theirs. And you'll be thankful we lost John Boyett, since Woods and Lee would be confined to wheelchairs. But the corners are every bit as fast as your WRs, and the damage will be limited.

And while the best passrusher, Dion Jordan (if you're not familiar with him, turn on your TV on a sunday next year) is iffy, but don't let that lift your spirits -- remember, you're going against Aliotti... think you might see a blitz or two (at completely inappropriate/unexpected times), which is going to make your underachieving QB very unhappy (and possibly causing complications with his raging case of HIV).

And your "home field advantage"? In the Moshofsky (practice facility 6 days a week, drunkfest on saturdays), they've been playing Tribute To Troy at ear-shattering volumes during every practice, all practice long. Just the sound of it is making them very... violent.

And while the Trojans may have once been one of the all-time great programs... enjoy your memory. We done went and jumped your claim, and the deed to the conference (the one we invited you to join) isn't going to be changing hands anytime soon.

So, in short...

you suck.

In chat/radio last Saturday, somebody asked, "where's Van"?

my reply:

curled up in the fetal position in his closet, quietly weeping

Close?

I don't think you'll be crying this weekend.

The oddsmakers are tugging at the Trojan heartstrings... with a big population base to exploit.

Reality says this one is a blowout for the ages.

No comparison of number of playmakers on both sides of the ball. USC has awesome players... in a few positions. Oregon is two-deep at all of them (except the backup kicker sucks balls, not sure how he kept his schollie).

It's quite simple. USC is only playing decently. Not great, not horrible...just sort of okay for a good BTPCF team. Oregon is playing lights out. Unless USC pulls off a performance unlike any they've given this season they clearly will not be able to match points with Oregon.

Probably their lone saving grace is Dins's overabundance of confidence in the outcome of this game. Knowing his propensity for getting picks wrong at a nearly YAFJ level, don't be too surprised if USC does in fact pull off that one signature performance of the season.

Oh, I'm rooting for a signature win... but it involves a certain drunk ethnic group, who I can actually see USC beating.

SC should thank their lucky stars Da'O is coming in banged up.

Already starting with the preemptive backpedaling? Knock it off. It's unbecoming.

Anyway, here's the fucked up thing. A couple of weeks ago I decided to ban myself from ever choosing a USC game in Pick 'Em, either for or against. Besides the fact that I hate doing it in general, I usually get fucked by a half-point or so every time.

And yet here I am again, picking Oregon to cover the spread. Since the sole goal of Vegas is to create a 50/50 spread of bets, I can't believe they only have Oregon giving 7.5. That number just seems to beg for a whole lotta Oregon love. Some highly unusual shit (for this 2012 season) will need to happen in order for USC to keep it that close.

You're most of the way to getting it, but not quite.

Which sphere-of-influence has more degenerate gamblers, thus more of those sportsbook-favorite, blinded-by-homerism retards?

I'll give you a hint -- it's probably not the 22nd largest metro area and its surrounds, but more likely the 2nd largest metro area.

Catching on yet?

If the books say 7.5, they're testing the waters, and probably are thinking 10.5-14.5, and waiting to see where the action lies. They don't always care about their final score prediction, it's often a game of trolling-for-suckers (sup thursday night games).

Hope you cash in but I strongly suspect you won't. USC's defense has not shown anything to suggest that they'll be able to keep this one close. I suppose there's the small chance of Oregon's offensive starters having played so few minutes this season that they'll be unable to sustain anything for an entire game, but if they're up 35-10 at the break then it won't really matter.

Maybe their weak schedule so far will also hurt them in that this could potentially be the first game this season where the other team punches them right back in the mouth and is basically just as fast. Again, though, I doubt it. They're just playing too well on offense while USC is playing iffy at best on either side of the ball. One thing for certain is that if USC is to have any shot whatsoever they cannot burp up another twelve soul-crushing penalties. They'll have to play their cleanest game by far, and their execution will need to be off the charts compared to previous efforts.

I don't see it. They look like a dispirited, disinterested, undisciplined bunch. Oregon seems to be on fire. This could end very badly for USC.

Don't mind Wags -- he's letting his disdain for me cloud his judgement.

Or he hasn't seen both teams play.

Despite losing some guns, Oregon's offense has reached a new level, even over previous Chip teams.

And the defense has improved by an order of magnitude, which is the difference in the "contender" criteria this season.

Definitely a better team than the previous 3 years. Not as many stars, but better talent from top to bottom, which allows more guys in the game, and a better tempo on offense, better rested on defense. And with all the blowouts, more guys are getting real-game snaps. USC's lack of depth (which is injuries, not sanctions) could really bite them in the ass.

Fingers crossed here. But I've seen every O game, and several SC games, and they're not at the same level.

Uhm...

no.

How many years in the Petey era did USC give out more schollies then they're presently allocated?

I'll help you out... pretty sure it was one, when they gave out a whopping one more than they have now.

While Lame might have different ideas about it, compared to the previous decade, sanctions have nothing to do with it.

But the injuries sure do (which I don't wish on any program).

Uhm...

yes.

Losing top recruits = losing quality players. More top-shelf players > fewer top-shelf players. USC lost a number of top recruits due to the sanctions, including the #1 player in the nation. This results in a diminishing of the quality of a team's depth.

And you can bet your ass that Kiffin would love to have ten more available scholarships each year, regardless of whether or not he would use all of them.

Just stop already.

How many have given the sanctions as a definitive reason for not USCing?

None?

While we can certainly speculate about Teo and others seeking greener pastures... it's just speculation.

Lost DAT to Oregon? Guess what... they wanted to put him strictly at DB. He wanted to play RB (although his only professional prospect is at DB, making it a bad decision, but whatever). One school said "No, you're playing DB." One school said "Sure, you can play RB." And that school is the New Tailback U... kind of a one-sided battle.

Was that "sanctions," or bad recruiting?

Hint: since Chip took charge, he doesn't care about what he thinks your pro prospects are to boost the "rock star" thing -- he cares about snagging the best, fastest athletes. USC was dumb, Oregon was smart -- deal with it as you watch DAT torch you saturday. USC is wayyyyyy too deep in its mantra of "we'll make you a pro." Oregon has DAT -- clearly a DB. Got Colt Lyerla, clearly a LB (who plays TE and now FB/RB). Probably 1st rounders if they played their natural positions... Chip lets them play where they want. Until that changes, USC is going to lose guys to Oregon (not that Lyerla was ever in question) in the recruiting wars... duh.

But go ahead and keep making excuses for your program-run-amok and the coaching turmoil it created (and always will in that culture... that Oregon is knocking on the door of, but hasn't racked up a body count yet). Blame the NCAA for all the wrongdoing in Troy, despite the fact USC has averaged a "major violation" every 5 years since they came up with the concept of "major violations." Go ahead and keep denying that there's a new sheriff in town...

we love it. But try not to blow it at the rate you have over the last decade -- we need a decent Little Brother to make the conference we started look good. Been a long time coming, but the conference crown has come home to roost... deal with it.

Lightning speed (both teams) vs plodding gorillas... quite a contrast.

Even Bama couldn't stop Oregon's offense... but I'm eager to see them try.
