so how's that kitchen coming? can't you just get some messicans to tack something up that passes as a kitchen long enough to get your loan through? or do you need that appraisal to come in as high as possible so you can order the ceramic brake option on that new 911 you're getting with the refi money?

Duck!!!

Countertop is supposed to go in on Friday. The missing piece of refacing stuff is supposed to be here this week, after which they can put in the new oven and warming drawer. The new drawers are made and ready to install. As soon as the countertop is installed they can do the sink and backsplash in a couple of days. We just changed the glass on the backside of the peninsula cabinets from clear glass to reeded glass.

The place still looks like shit but it should be done about the end of next week.

With all the change orders I doubt I'll be able to stock the fridge once we move back in.

You can get by on fat stores for a few months. The wife and kids will justhave to go to the local church for some grub.

You could always ask uncle barry to cough up a little of that stimulatin' dough.

Speaking of...I made 3 loaves of sourdough from my starter yesterday. One I did with a garlic salt topping on top of the egg wash. One was toasted sesame and the last was just whole oats.

The garlic salt was awesome. The rolled oats was good, but the oats themselves didn't produce much flavor. A bit hearty but that's it. The toasted sesame sourdough KICKED ASS. I was actually going to make a PET on it, but the wife had the camera. Should have just used the camera on the blackberry. I will take a couple pics of the leftovers and post here. Next time, I plan on making a couple sesame and one using my cold smoked garlic in the dough.

The new peninsula cabinets above the island counter are in, along with the glass doors. All the other new doors have been installed as well.

Hardware is supposed to go on today. The new drawer boxes are all made and most of the new slides are installed. The drawer fronts and slides will probably be done today.

The counter is supposed to go in on Friday, after which they can do the backsplash and the slate tile on the wet bar. The glass for the back of the peninsula cabinets will probably be done early next week.

It still looks like shit but we are on the verge of seeing some real visible progress. Hopefully we will be ordering the new refrigerator today.

Refacing is done and most of the hardware is installed.
The plastic walls are gone!

Still need the reed glass on the back side of the cabinets.
Countertop and sink go in tomorrow.
Hopefully the oven will go in tomorrow as well.
Tile probably on Monday.

Things are looking up!

Lookin' good, Mikey. We would love to do our kitchen remodel now, but we are deciding to pipe and cover a nasty river/ditch in the front of our property which will be 30k (min). Once the contractor comes back with a quote we can live with, I'll PET the project.

You've got to have priorities.

Our kitchen really needed work. 20 years old, oudated and wearing out. We hope to use it as a starting point to clean out, reorganize and update the entire house. Mostly flooring and new paint in the rest of the place.

Baby steps, dude. Not sure about your situation but I plan to live in this house the rest of my life and I'm 32. We so want to break down the kitchen and family room walls and expand but like you said, prioritize. We have plenty sq ft (3900 + 1800 basement) but not where we want it.

The ditch, we can't live with and I can't maintain. Pipe and cover it. Somehow our accountant saved us 32k in expected taxes to pay so we're going forward with the ditch project as long as it isn't 40k+

Very nice.

Now, take 2 lbs. of cheddar and bake it in the oven on thebottom at 500 for 1 hour. Then run through the self clean cycle. Vacuum out the ash. If anything remains, send it back.

Oh, and if you are not aware, they make stainless steel easy wipes. Buy them. Worth everything and then some. Not only on the inside but on the external grills and anything else you have that is stainless.

Anyone that does that to a good slab of extra sharp cheddar, should be horsewhipped, then stuffed into the same oven.

Faucet is in.
Reeded glass is in the back of the cabinets.
Cabinet doors have been aligned.

Still need:
Tile work
Roll outs

The refrigerator comes on Saturday. I think we will need to replace the dishwasher and compactor with matching stainless pretty soon. Also, I want to get a stainless spigot for the filtered water. The one that came with the system is chrome and doesn't really look right.

Project complete except for a few minor punchlist items. Oh yeah and the pullouts, which are back ordered. I'll post some pictures later today after the fridge is delivered and we do some final cleanup.

(The slate tile looks awesome)

The compactor is 1989 vintage and prolly the next thing to go. We looked at new ones and they're pushing $1K. We'll use this one for a while longer even though it's pretty ugly.

OK here are some "after" pics. There's still some cleaning up to do and a few punchlist items, but the work is substantially done.

I really think that the designer did a great job. The dark cabinets match our blinds and the drapes from the family room out to the back yard. The cabinets, quartz counter, green moss slate tile and stainless steel really go together well.

Here's the sink with the counter and backsplash:

Here's the wet bar, next to the oven, which is covered with the same tile that's behind the sink The walls in there are going to get a new coat of paint.

The backsplash behind the stove is also made from the same stone, but it's a ledger stone, smaller pieces that look like they're stacked. They pulled out random pieces and replaced them with green glass to add some interest. The stone will become more defined after we wash it once more because there's still a lot of grout smeared across. There used to be a big black microwave between the cabinets above the cooktop. We decided to dump the big old micorwave and get a new wall oven combo that includes a microwave convection oven.

Yeah smackoholic, the compactor needs to be replaced. We might try to find a replacement front panel in stainless, which might do for now. You can't really tell, but the pool is right outside the breakfast nook window. There's a grotto with waterfall and slide. The front of the grotto is faced with ledger stone that looks a lot like the stone behind the cooktop. When you're standing there it really ties the kitchen to the yard in a kind or organic way. There are also a bunch of granite boulders out there with similar color.

Here's a pic taken with the breakfast nook behind me, showing the sink, new fridge and the ovens. The oven has a microwave/convection on top, conventional/convection in the middle and a "warming drawer" below. Very cool integrated electronic controls on top. The fridge complies with the latest EnergyStar ratings. We changed from a black "side-by-side" to this french door model with the freezer below. It seems to have lots more usable space. No water dispenser in the door to drip down and leave hard water deposits. This all seems to blend well with the existing floor. The old 4 inch ceramic tile looked really busy next to the tile floor.

This shows the backside of the cabinets, from the family room. The upper cabinets have glass in the doors as well as on the back, and had to be custom built.

You're a little bit low, especially when you include the new fridge and ovens. We have a lot of counter space and the quartz counter was not cheap. Plus, the cabinets were'nt just a reface. The upper cabinets had to be custom made. The glass doors and glass on the back were extras. Plus we got all new drawers, slides and pulls, and pullouts in all the lower cabinets.

I don't hate the planet. I just like it a lot better with a nice place to cook from.
I should get carbon credits for the new fridge - actually I'll get $75 for letting SDG&E come and haul away the old one.
