US Scareways. Go figure.

Wonder if the passengers have to pay an additional $20 for the inflatable device?

Pretty remarkable job by the pilot, it would seem. I want to hear what he has to say.

Goddamn terrorist geese did this. Why do we allow these scum into the country? Deport them all back to Canada.

No doubt. We practice this stuff all the time, but there is a huge difference between the sim and doing it with pax in the back.

Huge luck also in that it reached the ferry terminal area of the Hudson. Allowed a quick response which prolly prevented hypothermia deaths.

Small world, eh?

I was watching CNN after just getting home from work and it's amazing how fast information travels these days.

Wolf Blitzer had a passenger on his cell phone less than an hour after the crash.

Now reporting that plane went down abeam 50th street and is currently around 13th. Tide is heading out and quick.

Looks like the FDNY boats are now tied up to the plane and they are towing it to ???????

KC Scott, NJTransit next time. Takes you right to Newark in half the time of a cab and for $12.

Probably just along for the ride and trying to keep it from sinking at this point. Those boats aren't equipped to tow an Airbus.

KC Scott,

If you return to NYC. Go to Penn Station. Take any New Jersey Transit train on either the Northeast Corridor Line or the North Jersey Coast Line. Both stop at Newark Airport. Then walk across the platform and get on the Monorail to the terminal. Simple, easy, fast, and much cheaper.

Left Seater,

A comment on a news website I read pertaining to this makes the claim it isn't the bird itself as much as it's - according to the poster there - the "metal ring around it's neck for tracking" that screws things up.

The contention seems to be the bird flesh alone wouldn't cause a jet engine to sieze up as it would simply get liquified - like hitting puree on a blender - but objects affixed to a bird that cause it.

Any thoughts ?

Bullshit.

How many birds do you think get collared, as a percentage?

Maybe one bird alone wouldn't bring down a plane, but birds of a feather flock together. It could have been a half dozen, or more.

That doesn't prove shit, as they were going in the direction of the current. Maybe steering, but certainly not towing... and holding on for dear life.

Yeah, lots of thoughts. Can a flock of large birds without tracking devices chew up an engine? Hell, yes. It is also possible that the engine doesn't lose blades, but instead stalls or flames out. At such a low altitude it would be impossible to restart before hitting the ground.

Engines can take handle a small bird or even some larger ones, but we are going to get it checked ASAP. I have had two bird strikes in my career, none in the engine though. Both times on the leading edge of the wing and we returned immediately to have it checked out.

Bird strikes are bad and that is why airports spend so much money to make sure it doesn't happen.

I say that news report is crap.

I wasn't referring to tugboats, and those weren't tugboats on the scene to begin with.

I was talking about the immediate responders. Those ferrys and police cruisers couldn't tow a rowboat upstream, and they didn't.

They simply steered that aircraft to the nearest likely landing spot.

Not to get in the way of this tug and towing discussion, but I guess I will.

While an A320 weighs way less than loaded barges, the barges are built to be towed/pushed thru water. The A320 would likely be ripped apart by a tow line if it was attempted to be towed upriver. Or crushed by a tug trying to push it upriver. Planes are pretty damn fragile, outside of normal operating situations.

Based on my understanding of FAR 121.391 every seat on this plane must have been occupied. The reports say all 155 people on the plane were rescued safely. Five of these were crew, 2 pilots, three cabin. The FAR says you must have 1 flight attendant for each 50 seats or any part thereof. So if this plane had 151 seats they would have needed 4 flight attendants.

So either every seat was full, or they were a FA short.

Perish the thought. We like arguing about the inconsequential.
While an A320 weighs way less than loaded barges...
How much does an A320 weigh when it's half or more full of water?

And how much HP would it take to tow that sumbitch upstream?

Just a hypothetical question, because this is a stupid arguement that mv loves to get himself in.
