HVAC help needed.

Post by Mike Backer »

HVAC help requested.

Girlfriend has a Coleman Automatic Ignition furnace that is blowing
air, but not warming anything. Went out and checked the gas line to the
house. Check. Gas line to the furnace. Check. Gas valve inside the
furnace. Check. The problem is that the burners are not lighting and
spitting the gas flame warmed air into the ducts. All I have is cold
air.

In an automatic ignition furnace, it is SUPPOSED to manually heat a
coil that ignites the burners once it gets hot enough, but this isn't
happening. Per the instructions, the ignitor goes thru a cycle to
light itself, and after timing out 8 times, it shuts down. Is there a
way I can get the burners lit by manually pressing an ignitor switch I
don't see?

Or do I get to be the guy on the news tonight that gets blown into the
next zip code because I decided to say "fukk it" and light it via the
long lighter grill thingie?

Trying to avoid the $75 price tag on having Darrell come out and fix
it in 2 seconds.

I think you'd better call Darrell.

In the meantime, as a temporary heat source, you could bring the bbq inside and light some charcoal.
Be sure to keep the windows closed so you don't lose any of that heat.

Gas only flows if the igniter heats up a thermocouple that sends a signal to the valve to open, so the long lighter grill thingie probably isn't going to work.

$75 isn't going to come near covering the repair, btw. Plan on at least a couple hun.

A Coleman Automatic Ignition furnace?

Tell her to buy a new trailer or your looking elsewhere for hotpockets.

This is Mike Backer we're talking about here. If he needs a temporary heat source, he'll cockslap his girlfriend's cheeks until they're so red they warm the house.

Remove the thermopile wires from their connections. Use a millivoltmeter, set to register DC, of course. Heat the thermopile with a propane/butane torch..cigarette lighter..whatever. If the thermopile is functioning correctly, you should get a reading somewhere around 400 millivolts...if no reading or something in the mud, the t-pile is bogus.
Should you or any of your MI personell be caught or captured, the Secretary will disavow any knowledge of your furnace.
Good luck, Mister Phelps.

All excellent suggestions. Especially the arteest formerly known as OCMike coming thru in the clutch.

I ended up having Darrell come out and assrape me to the tune of $240. New ignitor and new thermostat.

No rimjobs.

Had the same problem last year (ignitor only, thermostat fine). Cost me 85 bucks for parts and labor. Of course, this is Nebraska and people out here know you'll call them again if you don't bend them over the first time. Word of mouth advertising is priceless as well.
