Not sure what part of across the street you missed. The city tried to work with Sam Wo’s but it took them too long to get enough money to get rid of the rats and whatnot. I think it’s a spa now.

The city doesn't try and work with anyone.

Like my friend who is an engineer from Florida... who was working on the underground tunnel for the train from Columbus to south of Market... which is a complete disaster due to city politics.

My friend told me 4 years ago... they didn't have the money and it would NEVER get done, but he didn't give a shit, since the city was paying him $200,000 a year to fly out a few days a month and overlook the project. Guess what ?

It still hasn't gotten done... and they ran out of money. They can't even get the walkway done above the train center... which has no train.

Are you trying for a hook-up?

Huh ?

Yeah, I thought for sure I remembered it being on Washington St.

I remember sitting at the window table at Sam Wo's, which was sort of up on a platform, and looking out at The Golden Dragon, almost directly across the street.

Is that across the street north of the Greek place ? Just south of Broadway. Across Columbus on the other side of the street... before Columbus turns into Montgomery
It's directly across Columbus from City Lights, on the corner of Columbus and Broadway. The Beat Museum is across Broadway from there. The restaurant has some sidewalk tables outside on Broadway. I was up there on business once and ate dinner outside while a band was playing across the street. Very cool. I've probably been there at least half a dozen times since then, with various family members. My niece lives in the Sunset, but was in Nob Hill for several years.

Another cool restaurant is Bouche, which is a small French-style bistro on Bush, right on top of the Stockton Street tunnel. Great seasonally rotating menu, and excellent wine list.

Sam Wo's was a fluke. Located on a small street in Chinatown, you actually had to enter through the kitchen and walk up a narrow flight of stairs. The attraction of course was a waiter, an elderly Chinese guy who would basically do a Don Rickles act for every table, insulting everyone with a droll manner. It was a hoot, and the food was mediocre at best. It also had the feature of being open very late.

But that was a long time ago. The threat to the City is not people shitting in public--which is not even remotely close to what Fat Fuck is suggesting in this thread's initial post. No, the threat is the Silicon Valley invasion of millionaires. This has come in tandem with the obscene building boom which is something out of Shanghai. Looking out my window right now--a panorama of downtown and the Mission, Portrero Hill, etc., there are at least a dozen huge building cranes raising up huge glassy towers.

There's a fun scandal underway in the SFPD. It seems the longtime public defender--about thirty years--Jeff Adachi, a prominent figure in the progressive politics of "sanctuary" bullshit and everything else, and a good married family man, died suddenly of a heart attack from doing blow with a high-priced hooker in a love nest in North Beach. And then, because he'd been a thorn in the side of SFPD all these years, they casually allowed the crime scene evidence to be leaked, thus leaving a shameful taint to Adachi's legacy. Well, this started the wheels turning, and now the chief is under fire for hassling the reporter to whom the info--photos and so forth--was leaked. It's a bit weird, even by S.F. standards.

Edsel Ford "Eddie" Fong.

The food wasn't anything to write home about, but decent enough. It was a hoot to eat there though.

There were always plenty of dim sum rooms that had much better food, but not with the late night entertainment value.

Look, asshole, I've not only been to Sam Wo's many times back in the day, but described it on this palsied forum years ago, and described the same curious feature of having to walk through the kitchen to go upstairs. Who are you? I mean which nic were you using before? Because you're not some new asshole, because there aren't any. So which rummy--who has no doubt incurred my wrath or disgust in the past--are you? We stopped in SF for 2+ days on our way to Maui last month. Our hotel was in Fisherman's Wharf and we spent most of our time checking out the usual tourist destinations. I saw the normal amount of homeless that one would expect in a city and no shit on the sidewalks that we traveled.
