Not to presume to speak for TWIS but my best guess is that he'd rather not set himself up to answer for anything and everything another of the Tradition does or says. And I don't blame him. And it also goes back to what I said earlier about the fairness of certain questions. Each individual Jew is engaged in that life long trip to a great degree or not at all and everything in between but I'll not (and haven't) asked of TWIS, for example, this very line of questioning because he's in the middle of it. How fair would it be to ask someone in the middle of working out a long and detailed math problem "So what's the answer?"

Then to compound the thing by asking the general form? Who the fuck but God can answer if Isaac, Maimonides, Seinfeld, Baal Shem Tov and Tony Kornheiser are/were "good Jews," "real Jews," or "Real Good Jews?"

Well, on the topic of Judaism you'll find that the the polytheism of Hinduism and parts of Buddhism and the atheism of part of Buddhism clash with the Shema mightily. No go on any kind of syncretism in those directions. Something you might find interesting is the divergence of belief about reincarnation. In the "mainstream" school, there is no such thing. Kabbalistic (the mystical tradtion) thought, OTOH, embraces it.

Risa, if you're curious and wanna read more, start with some Chaim Potok and Isaac Bashevis Singer. The former wrote some seminal novels (I know you've at least heard of The Chosen) concerning Jewish life in America and Singer penned fictional classics about the Eastern European experience. I know you want a good fund of questions and after reading these guys you'll have plenty. I'm not big on suggesting novels as serious source material in general but I make an exception here.
