One item which is "kinda similar" is that the Federal Government no longer bothers to pass a budget. It is required by law for those keeping score at home. The last budget was passed in 2009. There are no accounting controls or fiscal responsibility whatsoever. They run up to the debt ceiling and then use the so called "fiscal debt crisis" to both bash Republicans as heartless and extort further increases in debt ceiling. It is essentially adminstration via permanent crisis.
Involving US military forces in conflict with Libya without reference to Congress is a violation of both the Constitution and the statutory reporting requirements of the War Powers Act. The attack on Libya was also a blatant violation of the UN Charter as well. I'd say that also is the type extra-legal shenanigan which accompanied Hitler's rise to power.

My assumptions are based upon things I hope never happen. Like financial collapse of the world economic system, world war. Something that brings civilized society to its collective knees. I would hope that our government could resist internal and external changes that would pervert liberty, but is not looking real good about now.
