A couple more additions to the family

On the left is a private barrel selection from one of my favorite area liquor stores. They flew out to Kentucky, sat down with the Wild Turkey folks, sampled four separate barrels, and hand-selected one. They bought the entire barrel (53 gallons) and Wild Turkey bottles all of it just for them. Came it at 110 proof. It's a really excellent whiskey, with a bit of a bite, as you might expect from Wild Turkey. I'll be heading back there on Friday to pick up a couple more bottles to stash. $59.99 per bottle. Yes, that bottle is almost empty after just two weeks because I invited friends over for a tasting party.

The second is barrel proof Elijah Craig. Not very common, it typically shows up once a year and a really good liquor store might get 2, 3, or 4 bottles. I know people, I got two bottles of this. Really exceptional whiskey. A standard bottle of this stuff at 90 proof can be had for under $30. Barrel proof gets hand-selected and is the best of what they're bottling. This one was $69.99, and well worth the money.

Commence with your bullshit Goober-is-a-drunk takes. I savor this stuff and it lasts for months/years. Burp.

Maybe Goobs is taken in by a bit of marketing. Now a days I think most wine and booze spirits (pre and post distillates) are almost commodity items and specialty labels just do blends, or perhaps creative fermentation of the mash.

If a local does make all its own shit, then that's nice but the quality for cost will never meet the top end big bottlers.

But then after a point we are not buying the booze, we are buying the sizzle, right Goobs? <can't tell shit from shinola after the first glass anyway>

Looks like good additions Goob.

I recently tried out a whiskey from Koval distillery made with a grain called millet. It is sweet and has a unique flavor and I believe is distilled in Chicago. Maybe my favorite 80 proof whiskey, I tend to prefer higher proof single barrel & cask strength whiskeys like you do.

I haven't tried Clyde Mays.

A couple tips. I find some YouTube reviews on bourbon, scotch, & other whiskeys are helpful identifying good alternatives that would likely not be sampled otherwise. Locally there are a few good liquor stores, but none have the selection that is available elsewhere in the country, leading to purchases of some bottles online. Enjoy.

Yes. I have a small local bar where the owner is a whiskey nut. He has it on hand. He also does whiskey tastings every 3 or 4 weeks. Neat bar, dates to the Civil War. It used to be called the "Union House".

I like Clyde, but I think it was rather expensive for a regular bourbon. Maybe $60$? I get it confused with Breckenridge. One is $30 and absolutely worth the moneh, the other is $60 and not.

Nice bottles, Goober. I've had the Craig, but not the Russel's. My local shop has done a few different barrels of bourbon and are now on to tequila. I luckily stumbled into another place a few years back that had their own barrels of Weller. That was excellent.

I had the regular Clyde May's bourbon. (BTW, it's distilled in Kentucky, aged in Alabama). I'd like to try this one, but it's at least $80.

Killian, I think the regular Russell's is worth trying. Hell, most 10-year-old Kentucky bourbons available for less than $30 are worth trying.

That whiskey is legendary. 10 years old, $26.99 a bottle in these parts, and just a damn fine bourbon. Used to be my everyday bourbon until I collected so much good high end shit. I still pull it out on a semi-regular basis. Also, the most heavily reviewed whiskey on the interwebs. Can't remember where I read this:
98% of the internet is porn, and the rest is Eagle Rare reviews.
The Buffalo Trace Antique Collection includes a 17-year-old Eagle Rare, but there was very little of that available last year.

I received a bottle of Buffalo Trace straight from their company when my wife's work went their for a trip. They have a small office, limousine all the way there from Wisconsin.

To be honest, probably the best I have had because this is the stuff they don't sell in the stores but giving out to VIP's.

Not sure what "Buffalo Trace" you're speaking of but Buffalo Trace bourbon as shown below is available everyday at Woodman's for $24.99. And it's another excellent value. The liquor store where I picked up the Russell's Reserve also does private barrel programs with Buffalo Trace and Wellers. Those will be coming soon. The Buffalo Trace private barrel last year was some of the best whiskey I've ever tasted. I still have a regular bottle and a 1.75 liter of that stuff left.

No it is not the one in the store (we have a Woodmans here as well, most popular store in the valley), different label. Had some fancy writing on it. I had the store brand and you can tell the difference but if I do take in bourbon, it is my preferred brand.

Hey Arch, did you have one of these?

This is the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection. They are released in the fall and retail for $90 each, but are very difficult to get. I own a bottle of the George T. Stagg which I purchased last November. I have yet to open it. I have tasted all of these, and to me they are the absolute pinnacle of whiskey-making.

Here's a good fact sheet on last year's release:

I picked up a bottle of Stagg Jr not long ago. It's aged about half as long (about 8 years) as George T Stagg. It's more available but still not that easy to find in San Diego, it's also around 130 proof. Like most everything alcohol, it's an acquired taste, but I found it quite enjoyable.

http://www.buffalotracedistillery.com/brands/stagg-jr

I found E H Taylor Small Batch (100 proof) for about $40, & like it quite a bit. I'm going to try the single barrel or cask strength next time I see them.

Goobs,

Sadly no, it was before then, around 2010.

But you are right in the taste, it is like bourbon heaven compared to other bourbons that is the run of the mill, middle tier.

Even the run of the mill BT is good.

If I have anything that is not American whiskey it has to be Crown Royal or better quality.

All the other Canadian shit taste like piss gas. I rather drink Kessler which is absolute shit.

Sorry, that's just the way you came off with your "Why don't you just answer the question?" shit. Lighten up, Mikey, you seem....anxious. I wasn't looking for any confirmation at all, certainly not from a fat, balding old man. I just tossed the photo up there to share a chuckle with Spray and his 1974 comment. And the fact that my hair style apparently hasn't changed much in 47 years.

It was a different bottle, not the one in the store either. The price was similar to what you said, maybe a tad bit cheaper, but it has been 8 years, it might be the same now. Maybe it is something they give you at the Distillery. My wife's dad in Sheboygan has it now.

That looks really nice. Four Roses makes excellent whiskey using multiple recipes. Very interesting approach. 2 different mash bills, 5 different yeasts. Here's some info:

http://bourbonr.com/blog/four-roses-mash-bill/

Local store carries a "specially made for" single barrel that is reputed to be 6 years old, for $40.

I went to a tasting last year, flight of 5 different bottles of Four Roses, including this one (available on the internet for $400-500):

https://fourrosesbourbon.com/elliots-select/

Whiskey is much more fun than politics.
