Grade your team's draft

Post by poptart »

5 years later.

http://www.nfl.com/draft/history/fulldraft?type=team

2007 Oakland Raiders

1 1 JaMarcus Russell QB Louisiana State
2 38 Zach Miller TE Arizona State
3 65 Quentin Moses DE Georgia
3 91 Mario Henderson T Florida State
3 99 Johnnie Lee Higgins WR Texas-El Paso
4 100 Michael Bush RB Louisville
4 110 John Bowie CB Cincinnati
5 138 Jay Richardson DE Ohio State
5 165 Eric Frampton DB Washington State
6 175 Oren O'Neal FB Arkansas State
7 254 Johnathan Holland WR Louisiana Tech

Taking JaWalrus Russell #1 overall was one of the biggest blunders in league history.
Complete failure as both a player and a person.

Z. Miller in rd. 2 was so-so.

M. Bush in rd. 4 was a nice pick.

The rest is basically pig slop.

Sorry to say that this was a Joke of a draft by Al Davis.

1 2 Calvin Johnson WR Georgia Tech -- Grade: A

For as much bad luck as they've had with the WR in the draft, the guy has turned out to be the real deal and then some. He's definitely the best player Millen ever drafted but I think Martz had as much of a hand in his choice as Millen.

2 43 Drew Stanton QB Michigan State -- Grade: D

Left for the Jets but was traded to the Colts after the Jets got Tebow. Decent 2nd/3rd QB but he was replaceable. Definitely was a waste of a 2nd rounder...but not a shock considering Millen's history with the draft.

2 58 Ikaika Alama-Francis DE Hawaii -- Grade: F

For being a defensive player himself, Millen didn't know shit about drafting defensive players. Cliff Avril in the '08 was probably his best find in the draft on defense. Alama-Francis was a joke of a pick but surprisingly, he's been with Miami the last 3 years.

2 61 Gerald Alexander FS Boise State -- Grade: D

He's been with 4 teams since leaving the Lions after '08. He got the most action in '09 with Jacksonville with 10 starts. He's basically out of the league...split time between the Jets and Dolphins last year and hasn't found a gig as of now.

4 105 A.J. Davis CB North Carolina State -- Grade: F

Don't think he ever saw the field as a pro.

4 117 Manny Ramirez G Texas Tech -- Grade: C-

Started 12 games at guard for the Leos in '09 but didn't see the field in 2010 and spent last year in Denver. He wasn't a terrible...provided depth at guard while he was in Detroit.

5 158 Johnny Baldwin LB Alabama A&M -- Grade: F

Never played as a Lion...ended up with the Chiefs in the '07 season but was never heard from since.

7 255 Ramzee Robinson CB Alabama -- Grade: C-

For a Mr. Irrelevant pick, he saw quite a bit of action. He hasn't played in the league since '09 but he played in 19 games over two years in Detroit with 31 tackles.

Final Grade -- D

Megatron is the only reason the draft wasn't an F.

Nice Lion evaluation, Shoalzie.

Fans tend to jerk themselves off immediately after a draft, imagining that new greatness has just arrived.

In most cases, it hasn't.

Five years later, just one guy the Lions drafted is still on the roster.

In Oakland's case, none of the players drafted remain on the Raider roster.

2007?

Not one player from that draft left on the Pats roster.

Couldn't remember one of their names or be bothered to look them up.

2007 Steelers

1 15 Lawrence Timmons LB Florida State
2 46 LaMarr Woodley LB Michigan
3 77 Matt Spaeth TE Minnesota
4 112 Daniel Sepulveda P Baylor
4 132 Ryan McBean DE Oklahoma State
5 156 Cameron Stephenson G Rutgers
5 170 William Gay CB Louisville
7 227 Dallas Baker WR Florida

A classic Steelers draft. They nailed their top 2 picks, Timmons and Woodley and got a decent nickel back in Gay in the 5th. The reach for Sepulveda bit them when he went down with multiple ACL issues, but his performance when healthy has been outstanding. Spaeth was never more than a 2nd teamer behind Miller.

I give the draft a B+/A- after five years. If Sepulveda is able to return, not break down and play at a Ray Guy level, it is an A-. if not, a B+ overall grade. For comparison, I give the 1998 draft where they picked Alan Faneca, Deshea Townshend, Chris Fuamatu-Ma'afala and Hines Ward an A.

It was the Millen era...most of his draft picks sucked. Hard not to give him failing grades. Back in '07, Calvin was the only pick I was excited about. I knew Stanton was too early of a pick when they passed on linebackers like David Harris and Poszluzny (sp) and those were the types of players they've lacked until they got Durant and Tulloch last offseason. Mayhew worked under him but thankfully he doesn't make the same dumb mistakes Millen made.

1 26 Anthony Spencer OLB Purdue
3 67 James Marten OT Boston College
4 103 Isaiah Stanback WR Washington
4 122 Doug Free OT Northern Illinois
6 178 Nick Folk K Arizona
6 195 Deon Anderson FB Connecticut
7 212 Courtney Brown CB Cal Poly-S.L.O.
7 237 Alan Ball CB Illinois

Doug Free is a decent tackle, folk was a decent kicker and the rest blew cack.

1 - 10 - (10) Amobi Okoye DT Louisville
3 - 9 - (73) Jacoby Jones WR Lane
4 - 24 - (123) Fred Bennett CB South Carolina
5 - 7 - (144) Brandon Harrison S Stanford
5 - 26 - (163) Brandon Frye G Virginia Tech
6 - 9 - (183) Kasey Studdard G Texas
7 - 8 - (218) Zach Diles LB Kansas State University

F

Okoye never did pan out.
Jones was serviceable at best. His performance in the AFC divisional game was God awful. Cost the Texans big time.
Bennett was okay at the end of his rookie year, but didn't amount to squat after that.
Harrison sucked
Frye sucked
Studdard is always on the IR
Zach Diles - best value pick. Was solid in the Texans 9-7 season, but regressed last season. He's been on 10 teams since last season.

Fuck y'all for bringing this draft up.

Denver Broncos

1 Jarvis Moss DE Florida-Total bust, played 2.5 uneventful seasons then released in 2010 had "character issues" but that never stoped Denver from doing something stupid.....

2 Tim Crowder DE Texas-another "can't miss" total bust....released by Denver in 2009 and picked up by Tampa Bay who released him March of this year...likely to end up back in Denver because they just can't help themselves

3 Ryan Harris OT Notre Dame-actually did fairly well for a year before he got injured then tanked...he was released by Denver and picked up by Philedelphia in August of 2011, then released by the Eagles in September....Denver resigned him in January of 2012 and he played in the Steeler and Patriot post season games....still on the roster....

4 Marcus Thomas DT Florida-he was the best pick of that draft, solid player....but given the fact that Denver just assigned #79 to somebody else, I'd say his stint with Denver was over....

Draft Grade-D minus minus
they'd get an F, but given one of the guys is still there, that warrants some consideration
get out, get out while there's still time

Anytime your team drafts a fellow alum from SLO, it gets a C- as a starting point.

2007 - PHILADELPHIA EAGLES
RD SEL # PLAYER POSITION SCHOOL
2 36 Kevin Kolb QB Houston
2 57 Victor Abiamiri DE Notre Dame
3 87 Stewart Bradley LB Nebraska
3 90 Tony Hunt RB Penn State
5 159 C.J. Gaddis SAF Clemson
5 162 Brent Celek TE Cincinnati
6 201 Rashad Barksdale CB Albany State (NY)
7 236 Nate Ilaoa FB Hawaii
D-
Other than Celek who has turned into a steady TE, this was an abysmal draft.
The trade of Kolb netted them a 2nd rounder they used this year and Cromartie who didn't do much last year.
Outside of the potential benefit of the trade, Kolb was a bust for the Eagles.
