What were you REALLY listening to...

Post by Mikey »

...when you were in High School?

I don't mean what was popular, or what you now think was good from back then, but what were you actually purchasing and playing on your record player (for the old farts), 8 track, CD player, Walkman, iPod, or whatever?

For example, Led Zeppelin was really popular and I liked hearing their stuff on the radio but I never bought any of their albums until later.

So, here goes...not in any particular order:

The Beatles
Santana (sort of a local band at the time)
Tower of Power (another local band)
The Dead (discovered in my senior year when Europe '72 came out)
Eric Clapton (Blind Faith, Derek and the Dominoes...his first solo album is an all time classic)
Chicago
BS&T
The Who
CCR
The Steve Miller Band
ABB
Boz Scaggs
Van Morrison
CSN&Y
Jefferson Airplane
The Crusaders
Simon and Garfunkel
Mahavishnu Orchestra
Stevie Wonder
Marvin Gaye
Moody Blues (about the only one of these that I have a hard time listening to anymore)

That's about all I can remember for now.

At my age sometimes the only pleasure you can get comes from living in the past, no matter how foggy the memories may be.

Oh yeah, I forgot Jethro Tull.

ELO
Skynyrd
Foghat
ELP
Yes

Most of the bands listed above, on LP and 8-Track, natch. But I paid homage to my favorite band by sporting this lid during my mid-teens:

And no, ucantdoitbieberSTyle_TRN2, it wasn't in support of your faggot Red Sox, either. Eat a dick, you fuckin' chowd. :hfal:

I woulda' been 10 in 1972 and too young to know shit from shinola about music (kinda' like Screw at 27) but my 7 years older brother was into bands like Yes and ELP at the time. He'd bring these albums home and make me listen to them. It eventually sunk in that they were pretty good. Save your 10cc jokes Goobs, I ain't reading them.

Speaking of 8-tracks, has there ever been a worse recording device? I had a 1970 Skylark that had no radio but did have an 8-track player added on. I had a handful of 8-tracks that I can remember. Heart, BTO, Eddie Money, a few others. It was great when they would jump from track to track right in the middle of a song.

As a little kid I pretty much listened to pop top 40 which, believe it or not kiddies, was on AM. FM "album rock was for older dope smoking hippies. First actual album I remember my parents buying that I thought was cool was saturday night fever soundtrack. Yeah, I know, disco sucks, but that was the creme de la creme of disco.

Within a few year I had moved on to Kiss, Aerosmith, Zeppelin, VH.

I bought ALOT of cassette tapes during the high school years. I still have them in my garage, somewhere. :blush

Some of my favorites were:

Depeche Mode
OMD
The Fixx
The Ramones
Oingo Boingo
The Smiths
The Cult
10,000 Maniacs
The Cure
Public Image Limited
Berlin
New Order
R.E.M.
Siouxie and the Banshees

Plenty more, but these threads get old quick. Super bored.

High School? There are a few of the biggies in my old vinyl/8-track collection.

REO Speedwagon, Styx, ACDC, Queen, The Who, Beatles, ELO, Molly Hatchet, Skynerd, Zeppelin, Ozzy, Fleetwood Mac, The Police, Judas Priest, Rush, Floyd (discovered Dark Side my senior year)

I never bought many cassettes as I was so pissed they were trying to make my vinyl obsolete. Next thing you know, CD's were making cassettes obsolete. Cassette tapes sucked slightly less than 8-tracks but not by much. And try packing the cover of LZ III on anything other than a 33rpm LP. You could trip out on that cover almost as much as the music. Album covers back inna' day had style.

"Boston" concert tees were as rare as a literate Screw_thepoochagain post.

Spencers was still selling black lights, lava lamps, and Keep on Truckin' posters, and Walmart was still landlocked in Arkansas. And it ain't like we had an Internet with a band's Website lyin' around somewhere back in 1978 - Your Climate Saviour had yet to invent it.

Dickweed. How old are you? 12?

So you sported a Red Sox lid because you were too lazy to seek out a band's T-shirt? Yeah it may have been a different time, but the only thing that sounds stupider than doing that is actually defending it.

Like many of you tards, I listened to a lot of classic rock when I was in high school. Floyd, Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, GNR, Neil Young, etc.

Then I discovered good, relevant music and stopped listening to that garbage.

Is that Freedom Rock man ?

My senior year a dude on my football was very concerned about my musical tastes, specifically because I had some DMC, and Go Go on a tape I made. He introduced me to the Grateful Dead.

Probably one of the best quotes I ever heard regarding the Dead goes like.

"Isn't the first day of finding a band that you feel you have known your whole life the greatest?"

I can't explain it. I think was a live tape with Stella Blue, The Wheel, Not Fade Away and it grabbed me. I was hooked. Sure I heard "Truckin'" "Casey Jones", and all but that live tape - sealed the deal.

How could I forget the Junkyard Band and Afrikaa Bambatta. Tribal drums of any sort were great to gear up for a football game.

Roots, rock, raggae. Another team-mate of mine was concerned I was listening to "black music" (LL Cool J, GoGo) so he informed me of how great Eric Clapton was. :?

The irony meter never did recover from that?

I've got a Freddie King show where Freddie introduces "Have You Ever Loved A Woman" by saying "A lot of people think Eric Clapton recorded this song first. That's bullshit. He was five years late."
