Modern Country that doesn't make you sick

Post by Bizzarofelice »

None of the alternacountry No Depression stuff like Bottlerockets counts. I'm talking about shit you can find on The Nashville Network. You ever come across some of it that wasn't thoroughly disgusting?

I remember in the mid-90's an outfit called the Mavericks that put out an album I actually liked. Of course Allison Krauss has a couple songs that held my attention.

"Weed With Willie" isn't bad, but I don't think it's "artistic" enough to pass muster with Bace. He's a Flaming Lips fan, ya know.

My husband has been listening to a couple different country artists lately (and we're not big country fans). I don't watch the Nashville Network, so I don't know if these guys are on it or not.

Hank Williams III (sounds closer to HW Sr. than HW Jr.)
Wayne "the Train" Hancock
Dale Watson

We saw Hank Williams III live about a month or two ago in Kansas City. Pretty fun concert and many of his songs are sped up a bit. Fiddle player and steal guitarist were incredible.

AK and Union Station, definitely.

I'm not sure if Nickel Creek qualifies, but they're good too.

RACK this song.

And what's wrong with Hank III? :?

Also, Old Crow Medicine Show rules!

EDIT TO EMBARRASS MYSELF: I friggin' LOVE that song "Suds In The Bucket" by Sara Evans. It's kinda cheesy, but I can't help but rock out* to this song.

*Yes, I know you don't "rock out" to country.**

The Rev is cool and all, but he's no Hank III. I don't really see much similarity in their sounds either. I guess Hank III plays 2 or 3 songs that could qualify as "psychobilly," but he mostly plays straight up country or straight up thrash metal. The Rev is more of a one trick pony. His bassist is badass though.

Ummmm, It's 12 Golden Country Greats, not "hits." The title refers to the Nashville session musicians they hired for the CD, not the songs themselves, of which there are only 10, by the way.

You need to lay off the Scotchgard, bro...

If he had talent, he'd be playing music.

If a musician relegates him/herself to BY FAR the most uninspired, talent-crushing, limiting, stifling non-music genre going.

Don't get me wrong, us hard-rockers actually appreciate what country did for us.....l...became the new go-to destination for those with ZERO talent to go be robots for a record exec.

There's probably some excellent, well-trained musicians doing the soundtrack to Sesame Street, I'm sure. I have little use for them, either.

I prefer music.

Country isn't music. It's what you were told to listen to, made by people being told what to play. By definition, if the creativity has been removed, then it isn't music.

Zanfir has MAD GAME on the pan flute.......why don't you run out and buy it?

It's a good thing everyone should like what you consider music dims.

I happen to like country. But I need a change right now. Suggest something you consider good.

The horn sound is the only thing good in that song!

Do you have anything else you consider "good"?

This is kinda like country, except it's my bud's old metal band. They made it pretty high up the NW regional charts, ten years or so ago.

The best country guitarist to ever pick up the instrument isn't even identified with country.

Speaks volumes about the state of individual musicianship in country.

Edit: I could have come up with better examples of "country" tunes by said band, but that just happened to be the one I was listening to at the time.....I'll bet TWIS is familiar with it

Rack that. Listening to the Crazy 8s and loving it. Sounds like Joe Jackson from back in the day.
