T1B Survey
So, I'm taking a gun safety course this weekend. In the end, I will have a certificate required to apply for Virginia's Conceal Carry permit.
Knee jerk reaction to Obama Hysteria ?
Perhaps. I've been going shooting with a friend of mine recently and had always contemplated exercising my rights under the 2nd Amendment but always figured it was a low priority. "It'll be there when I need it". This friend counseled me as to - "If you wait until you need it, you'll be too late". Add to that he's shared NRA literature that is expressing some concern about President Obama's attitudes towards the 2nd Amendment.
So, I have signed up for a course. Next order of business is determining the firearm of choice. Most, if not all, violations of the 2nd Amendment will target handguns and "assault" type weapons. Rifles, shotguns, and the like are typically the last to be targetted as they have a utility other than - killing people. So the decision was made to investigate purchasing a handgun.
The one I am looking at costs $670.00
What would T1B do ?

Re: T1B Survey
I recently stopped in the gun shop with a friend who is a gun-nut. He has quite the impressive arsenal, and a concealed permit to go with it.
While his choices for carry guns are numerous, he still bought a new one.
http://www.kel-tec-cnc.com/p3at.htm
Not the highest-end piece on the market, but is the most concealable gun that shoots a "real" bullet (subjective, of course).
It certainly adresses the problem of packing in hot weather -- which has been an issue for the CWP holders I know.
I think he paid about $250, give or take a few. If you go with a .380 or smaller, spend the dough on the hot loads.
And I think this move is most patriotic of you, Tom.

Re: T1B Survey
A gun saftey course is good for anyone to take, regardless if you move on to the permit.
I have had the right for years to carry here in Texas and will continue to encourage others to do the same. My wife has taken gun safety courses also, however, she isn't comfortable carrying a gun. But she does know how to handle one and how to use it properly to stop an intruder in our home.
Funny thing about the permit is you are instructed to give it to law officers anytime you are stopped. I guess it is so if they decide to search you or your car they know to be on the look out for it. The one time I have been stopped since I have had it, the officer just wanted to chat about what I shot, etc. Spent 15 minutes talking and then he sent me on my way without so much as a warning. Hope it works the same way in VA.

Cool weapon.
The weapon I've been looking at is a revolver. Based upon counsel, as a novice, the revolver is more user friendly, easier to clean, and less prone to jamming. So I'm adhering to that advice.
Ruger, 357. Laser sight is built in.

Re: T1B Survey
Don't get me wrong -- I don't have any beef with a Ruger revolver, and I'd be hard pressed to find a better round to cap bad guys with than a mighty .357.
But on the other side of the coin -- a wheelgun is harder to conceal.
And anyone who says a wheelie is markedly more reliable/less jam-prone is either grossly biased, over the age of 65, or has been shooting some cheap-ass autoloaders.
And they've sure the fuck never had a primer back out of the casing... which renders a revolver useless, and is a 0.5 second fix on an auto... there is that. Sure, with quality ammo, a primer coming loose is rare... but with quality ammo and a well-maintained auto, jamups are rare.
BTW-if I was buying a wheelie, I might try and come up with the extra bucks to get one thatsays Colt on it. Nothing wrong with a Ruger, but it's a Buick sitting next to a Rolls. If you shoot both side-by-side, you'll understand why.

Re: T1B Survey
nothing wrong with the little ruger. nowadays, I carry a s&w model 19 snubby- holds 6 rounds of .357 instead of 5 for the ruger.
before that, i carried a para ordinance p-12 45acp. last few times i had it at the range it started having various stoppages (fail to feed, fail to eject) after the first couple magazines

Re: T1B Survey
It depends. On your body type (how easy you can conceal the gun) hand size (how well you can handle it) and proficiency (speaks for itself). Thje best thing to do is go to a range that rents guns and try a few out before buying one. The best gun to carry is the one you are most comfortable with.

So far Obama seems like the best thing to have ever happened to the firearms industry.

That would probably be the advent of the centerfire cartridge.
But... your statement speaks volumes and volumes, for certain.

So far, the "Shove it up your ass folks" are winning the poll.
I hope they don't mean, all one dollar bills. Can I skate with six hundreds, a fifty and a twenty ?
Is there any mercy left ?

Re: T1B Survey
"Lady" is much more respectful of the whole woman. It respects her needs as a social power, a graceful entity, and a dirty dirty naughty girl.
Lady, when youre with me Im smiling
Give me all your love
Your hands build me up when Im sinking
Just touch me and my troubles all fade
Lady, from the moment I saw you
Standing all alone
You gave all the love that I needed
So shy, like a child who has grown
Youre my lady of the morning
Love shines in your eyes
Sparkling, clear, and lovely
Youre my lady
Lady, turns me on when Im lonely
Show me all your charm
Evenings when she lays down beside me
Just take me gently into your arms
Your my lady of the morning
Love shines in your eyes
Sparkling, clear, and lovely
Youre my lady
Lady of the morning
Love shines in your eyes
Sparkling, clear, and lovely

It sure the fuck doesn't hurt.
My compact is a .32ACP... and I ain't betting the farm that it's going to stop anyone from shooting back... hence the .45ACP at bedside.
Ballistics is actually fairly cut and dried-btw. Something about mass times velocity, or something like that.
Plus, there's the "toughness factor" -- shoot me, or many, many others like me with a 60gr .32ACP in the leg, and all it's most likely going to do is piss me off. Although I imagine if JSC endured the same fate, it would result in a two month hospital stay.

Tom,
For CCW, take a look at these:
Walther PPK/S .380
Walther P99 Compact
Beretta 92 Compact
CZ 75 Compact
The last three are smaller versions of a full size 9mm gun. All can be had for under $600.
