I'm def more of a Rivals guy than Scout. I have the premium deal over at Warchant.com and I just think Rivals has more people to do scouting, so I think they are more informed. I think there is no doubt that Jimmy Clausen is the top player in this year's class. As of right now I dont know as much about the kids as I will come August - Dec as recruting heats up, but I am pretty sure that those lists will be updated at least 2-3 more times before National Signing Day.

Mack is a great recruiter because he tries to be honest with the kids and he works his ass off to develop a family atmosphere around the program. He has also done a great job of surrounding himself with great recruiters, I can honestly say I don't know of a single assistant that is bad at recruiting. But lets face it, it doesn't hurt to be right in the middle of one of the biggest recruiting areas in the country at the top school in one of the most fun cities in America.

Combine that all together and Mack should be in the top 5 in recruiting every year.


BTW I wasn't commenting so much about how good the class is as much as I was commenting on how Mack is almost finished with recruiting and he has filled the class with so many top 100 prospects.

Austin, Texas is one of the fastest growing cities in the country, the cost of living isn't insanely high, the weather is retirement-worthy for most of the year, and it's on its way to becoming the live music capital of the states, especially re: college music, which, along with hip hop, seems to drive the music scene's bus lately. All of these things are very, very important to college-aged kids. In addition, their teams are successful, and the school supports them...

The people are nice, except for the God-forsaken Tejas fans, and, despite the large, large gay population, you'd have to be a leper to not get laid there...

Cuntry? Pantera Covers? You obviously didn't get out much. It is sad. I was out in So Cal with a buddy of mine a few years back. I was living in Austin and we wanted to check out the night life in SO Cal. It sucked. The bars were boring, the drinks were twice what they cost on Austin and all the chicks were so stuck up it wasn't funny. My family is from So Cal and I spent a ton of my youth there. You can have it.

Austin is a fun place. The bars are killer, the music is great. Unlike some, there is every type you can imagine. If you get bored in Austin then you probably would bitch at an orgy. Do you like Golf? Great courses. Water Skiing, wake boarding?? Great lakes. Biking? Tons of trails and courses. Amusement parks? Six Flags Fiesta Texas is 1 hour away. Pro Sports? Austin has a arean team. You also have the Spurs less than an hour away. Ever go tubing down the river? HOw about Schlitterbahn? 1/2 hour away.

We all would love to have Mack but there is no way in hell I could see him leaving Texas. His career is very similar to Bobby's. Again I wasnt saying that it wasnt a bad place to live but to say it is the most fun city in the nation to a 17-18 year old kid, youre fooling yourself.
I wasnt debating cost of living or traffic, and that mountain bike ranking has to be a typo, youd need mountains to have great mountain bike run, I dont see NORBA planning any downhill races in Austin, Texas.

I have been to Austin several times, the bars are cool if you like cuntry music or Pantera cover bands, they do have a festival once a year that I havent been to but the Coachella music festival doesnt make the Low Desert the countries best music region and they have a huge festival every year too.

Id be willing to bet you that most high school seniors if given a chance to live anywhere for free for four years are going to pick a place other than Austin Texas.

The cost of living in So Cal is a joke, the crowds are horrible the traffic will drive you to shoot someone but geographically, its the best place in the nation to live. Thats how a 17 year old kid thinks, hes not thinking mortgage or traffic, hes thinking he can be at the beach in the morning, the slopes in the afternoon and in Vegas by that evening. If So Cal wasnt such a desirable place to live, the homes would cost as much as they do in Austin

Cuntry? Pantera Covers? You obviously didn't get out much. It is sad. I was out in So Cal with a buddy of mine a few years back. I was living in Austin and we wanted to check out the night life in SO Cal. It sucked. The bars were boring, the drinks were twice what they cost on Austin and all the chicks were so stuck up it wasn't funny. My family is from So Cal and I spent a ton of my youth there. You can have it.

Austin is a fun place. The bars are killer, the music is great. Unlike some, there is every type you can imagine. If you get bored in Austin then you probably would bitch at an orgy. Do you like Golf? Great courses. Water Skiing, wake boarding?? Great lakes. Biking? Tons of trails and courses. Amusement parks? Six Flags Fiesta Texas is 1 hour away. Pro Sports? Austin has a arean team. You also have the Spurs less than an hour away. Ever go tubing down the river? HOw about Schlitterbahn? 1/2 hour away.

Forgot two important things around Austin. The best Snorkling outside the Florida Keys in the main 48 is just outside of Austin and a killer white water rafting trip is also available in New Braunfels.

Did I mention tubing down the Guadalupe. Not to mention Austin is just 60 away from San Antonio, 2 1/2 hours from Houston, 3 hours from Dallas and 2 hours from the ocean.

BTW you won't see mountains but because Austin is right in the middle of the Texas hill country I have been told that the scenic drives make Austin look a lot like California.

I would hope that a kid who is going to college is actually thinking about getting their education and playing their sport? There is a night life everywhere. There is booze and broads everywhere. To fuck up an opportunity at a free education because the nightlife is better is a bit off track. I would hope that if given the chance my kids would focus on why they're there. Yes I know college kids do get off track but there are those who are actually there for the right reasons and the education actually takes precedence over how many tittie bars and loose women there are.

I've read the Rivals board for the better part of the last 6 or 7 years. here is what I think these kids are really looking for in a school.

1. playing time
2. winning
3. play in big games
4. Social atmosphere
5. academics

This list is not meant to fit every kid and I'm sure each kid would probably rearrange it in some way but for the most part these are the things that draw athletes to choose one school over another.

I also agree with Chief and Cicero. When you send guys to the league, it's easy to recruit. One of the reasons ND will not have problems getting offensive players in the coming years. They need to put some defenders in the NFL to help with that side of the ball. Hopefully this year Zbikowski and Abiamiri can help with that.

Historically Texas usually by August had 1/2 to 3/4 of their class done with a select few holding out til after Christmas. This is the first year where they have pretty much filled the entire class by the beginning of June.

As for barksdale Texas is sitting pretty with him. We face tOSU on our home field and I'm sure he will be there for that game not to mention he is probably a shoe-in for the Army All-American game down in San Antonio. The fact that he is one of 3 or 4 guys Texas is still after means they can put more resources towards recruiting him then anyone else.

Yes right now Texas is a longshot but realize that Texas does have one of the best DT coach in college football and a long history of DT excellence. Still it is hard to pull in a guys who are from out of conference but Texas has broken some barriers this year so I feel pretty good about him.

Does Texas have a shot? Sure. About as good as every other team in America not named Ohio State.

Atlanta to LA is not a good indicator of a cross-country trip. Atlanta is considerably inland. And the east coast jogs considerably to the west as one goes from north to south. Similarly, the west coast jogs considerably to the east as one goes from north to south.

The longest cross-country trip involving major cities I could find is Boston to San Francisco, which is about 3100 miles per http://www.mapquest.com. As you said, Detroit to Austin is about 1400 miles, so it's a little less than halfway across country.

I found this little tidbit about Barksdale's visit to Texas last month. He seems pretty high on Texas after his visit.

"Texas has great facilities, the best I've seen, and I've visited Ohio State, Tennessee, Michigan, LSU and Cincxinnati," he said, "and Austin is one of the best cities I've ever seen. Texas is a great academic school and the football team just won the National Championship. There isn't anything not to like about Texas and Austin and Longhorn football."

When asked about what schools he plans to visit officially:

"Texas for sure and then maybe one or two others from among Tennessee, LSU and Ohio State. I have to move things up a little because I'm going to graduate in December and enroll in college in January. My high school team doesn't have any open dates once we start playing, so I'll have to take a visit or two or three in December."

A factor that bodes well for Texas is Barksdale's desire to "go to a college where the coaches really care about me and have a family atmosphere."
