Re: I bought a horse last night!
I would have posted this thread in the Horse Racing Forum, except, well, it doesn't exist.
In less than a month, the 2025 T1B Triple Crown Challenge will begin with the annual The Kentucky Derby, call it! thread. So you have that to look forward to.

I only opened it because I saw you posted and I was looking for another bungle blast.
Re: I bought a horse last night!
Fair enough, my horse diary that y'all can eavesdrop on if you give a shit, or want to smack on me when the horses lose -- which is most of the time.
And I haven't really spammed the board with my horse bs. It has all been in this thread, and an occasional mention in the Weekend Roll Call threads. Easy enough to avoid.
Not counting the 3 threads per year that are the T1B Triple Crown Challenge, as those aren't my horses. Yet.

If you were curious as to how they would describe a horse that sucks, here you go:
Intellectual Workout Update
Intellectual worked four furlongs yesterday morning at Belmont Park, covering the distance in :50.00 flat (88/133).
Although the time was decent, the Clement team was unimpressed with the manner in which he did it and noted that the breeze seemed to take a lot out of him. They also said that he has lost a bit of weight, which is not ideal considering that he has trouble carrying his weight to begin with.
Off of that poor showing, they elected to pass on entering today for that aforementioned target race. They will monitor him in the coming days/weeks and possibly consider trying turf for his next race.
Ultimately, to this point all indications are suggesting that he is pretty limited as far as talent goes. For now, we will give the Clement team some time to try to get Intellectual figured out and come up with the best path forward.

It's funny, though, how a horse may fail at something, but become someone else's best riding buddy. My daughter's coach, (she's way more than that-my daughter wonders if it's weird that a someone who is 70 is her best friend) bought an elegant quarterhorse to train as an English eventing performance horse. Despite the horse's crazy athleticism, confirmation, she just couldn't get it done with her. Sold her for a "get this horse of my property" price to someone who wanted a horse to trail ride with and the gal who bought her just loves her. So maybe Intellectual has a future ahead of him being some little kid's best buddy.

REPUTATION WINS THE RACE!
She took the lead soon after the start and kept it the entire way, ended up winning by 6 lengths, it definitely was her day today.

Re: I bought a horse last night!

Gotta give props to 88, who called this race last night in Tune Town chat, he named Tater Tot and Bottomless Mimosa with Reputation. The $2 trifecta paid $83.60.
Reputation Romps at Gulfstream!
Congratulations! Reputation earned her diploma in dominant fashion this afternoon at Gulfstream Park, airing by 8 1/4 lengths. We knew she had more talent than she’d previously shown, and it was great to see her put it all together off the lay-off. Hustled to the front from her rail draw, your daughter of Bolt d’Oro posted solid splits of :21.89 and :44.96 and never looked back.
The logical next spot will probably be a first-level allowance in Kentucky, but we’ll see how she comes back, how the speed figures look and go from there.
We appreciate everyone’s patience in allowing Team Delgado to get this filly sorted out and on her game—it’s always nice when that patience is rewarded.

Good news about Reputation, she won her race and finished up with no injuries. Onto her next race.
And Miss American Pie is getting ready for her race later this month. Beautiful horse.

Reputation Update
Team Delgado reports that Reputation came back from her win in great order. She will ship to Keeneland this weekend and we’ll begin to start weighing next options in the coming weeks.

Miss American Pie Workout Update
Miss American Pie worked four furlongs yesterday at Belmont Park, covering the ground in :49.66 flat (26/41). Your daughter of Maclean’s Music remains on course for her aforementioned target race on Apr. 24 at Aqueduct. We will be back with an update once entries are out.

Race day for Improbable Luck! 5th race at Oaklawn Park.
This will be his 2nd race, in his 1st race he showed some good speed, but didn't have the stamina to hold onto the lead. Since then he has had some nice workouts. This is a step up in class, a $110,000 purse and he will have some strong competition. But trainer D. Wayne Lukas thinks he's ready for this level, and so we'll see this afternoon.

Introducing the newest member of the Roux stable:

This horse has an incredible pedigree.
He is a full brother to 2023 Kentucky Derby winner Mage.
He is a full brother to 2024 Belmont Stakes winner Dornoch.
And he's a half-brother to 2025 Kentucky Derby third place finisher Baeza.
Look at that horse. Oh absolutely welcome to the stable.
BloodHorse and Thoroughbred Daily News articles on him.

BloodHorse and Thoroughbred Daily News articles on him.
MyRacehorse is excited to partner with John Stewart’s Resolute Racing to present what is undoubtedly the best-bred individual ever made available via a fractional ownership offering, the full brother to Kentucky Derby winner, Mage, and Belmont Stakes winner, Dornoch, and the half-brother to 2025 Kentucky Derby starter, Baeza.
Meet Puca ‘24, the full-brother to 2023 G1 Kentucky Derby winner Mage and 2024 G1 Belmont S. and G1 Travers S. hero Dornoch, as well as the half-brother to Baeza (McKinzie), a $1.2-million yearling and narrow second to Journalism in the 2025 G1 Santa Anita Derby who will make his next start in this year's edition of the Kentucky Derby
Resolute purchased dam Puca–herself a stakes winner and Grade 2-placed runner who also received prestigious ‘TDN Rising Star’ honors–for a sale-topping $2.9 million at the 2023 Keeneland November sale while she was carrying this Good Magic colt. The daughter of dual Classic winner Big Brown was already a Derby winner-producing mare at that point, but she’d earn a second jewel towards her own Triple Crown the following June when Dornoch dug in gamely to defeat a strong field in the “Test of the Champion.” She was a shoe-in for that year’s KTOB Broodmare of the Year award, and that was after just her first three foals–her first foal, the filly Gunning (Gun Runner), was also multiple stakes-placed.
Puca is half to Finnegans Wake, who scored his own Derby Day glory when taking the 2015 G1 Woodford Reserve Turf Classic.
Last April, meanwhile, Puca foaled her latest potential star in this strapping now yearling colt. He has continued to blossom in the past year or so, and is certainly one of the most promising and well-credentialed Thoroughbred yearlings on the planet. A beautiful chestnut with exceptional balance and proportion, he possesses a powerful forearm and hip and an athletic, free-moving walk.
He will go into pre-training later this year, with the plan to eventually turn him over to five-time Eclipse Award-winning conditioner and future Hall of Famer Chad Brown. The trainer of last year’s champion 3-year-old male, G1 Breeders’ Cup Classic winner and near Kentucky Derby-misser Sierra Leone also guided Puca ‘24’s standout sire Good Magic.
A seven-figure son of Curlin, Good Magic was a champion juvenile himself and Derby runner-up, and he has emerged as one of the most successful sires–particularly of two-turn dirt horses–in America. In addition to the two superstar colts mentioned above, Good Magic has sired three other Grade 1-winning males routing on the dirt: last year’s G1 Pacific Classic hero and recent G1 Dubai World Cup runner-up Mixto; sale-topping G1 American Pharoah and G1 Arkansas Derby scorer Muth; and the Chad Brown-trained Blazing Sevens, winner of the prestigious G1 Champagne S. in 2022.
With four of those five currently standing at stud in Kentucky, there are not many–if any–sire lines that figure to have a more significant impact on the breed in the coming years.
Opportunities to get involved in a horse of this caliber do not come around every day.
Expected on track: Summer 2026
Re: I bought a horse last night!
Seems it has been a awhile since one of the Roux stable had a race, but now there are three coming up soon.
On Saturday, Reputation will be in race 7 at Churchill Downs. This will be her 4th race, she's finished 3rd, 5th, and 1st, with increasing spead numbers each race. She's had some fast recent workouts, but she's going up in class (this is an allowance race), so it will be interesting to see if she can step up to the challenge.
On Sunday, Miss American Pie is in the 4th race at Belmont. This is her 5th race, and she's had mixed results. She won her 2nd race after finishing a strong 3rd in her first race. But then she finished 5th, so they decided to run her on the turf, and there she finished 11th. This race she goes back to the dirt track, hopefully we'll see some improvement.
Also on Sunday, Intellectual will race in the 5th race at Belmont. Honestly not expecting much here, since he came in 8th in his first and only race, has has slow workouts, had to recover from an infection, and as described by the trainer, "he is pretty limited as far as talent goes."

That's a pretty good line I need to use for parent/teacher meetings, or better yet IEP meetings (annual meetings for retards) when mom wants to know why Jr. isn't his class' valedictorian.

Good question. I'll hazard a guess that you are fairly good looking and well enough put together that you didn't fall into the classification of being an FLK-funny looking kid. Those poor bastards get tested before the ink is dry on the registration forms. My wife's nephew was a handsome, athletic kid who had a modicum of social skills but is capital R retarded. Never got tested, nice enough kid, but dumb as the day is long.

Re: I bought a horse last night!
Damn! Not sure what happened at the start, but Reputation started the race dead last. Maybe had trouble in the gate, not sure.
Anyway, once she got going, she really ran well. She was accelerating at the end and almost hit the board, finishing in a close 4th place.
Still positive on this horse.

Owner Update
Reputation Race Recap
Reputation was an encouraging fourth this afternoon at Churchill Downs.
Off a bit slowly, your filly sat at the back of the pack down on the inside early while traveling strongly. She moved up willingly heading for home, split rivals, and tipped to the outside for clear sailing. She was fanned five or six wide at the top of the lane, and kept on from there without quite finding the gear she needed to challenge for the top spot.
Jockey Luan Machado noted that the horse to Reputation’s inside breaking through the gate before the start of the race likely impacted her slow start—he said before that happened, she was locked in and ready to break, but was a bit unsettled when they reset and actually started the race.
He was very encouraged by how well she handled the kickback and carried herself up in between horses and into contention. He said he thought they were a winner at the top of the lane, but she just got a bit tired late.
Assistant trainer Gustavo Delgado, Jr. felt that Reputation likely needed that race from a fitness perspective and expects her to be ready to fire her best shot next out with that start under her belt.
That definitely seemed like a promising run against a tough bunch—and probably a step forward for Reputation from her maiden breaker. We’re excited to see what she can do next time third off the bench in a similar spot.

What??Intellectual & MAP Scratched Today
Both Miss American Pie and Intellectual have been scratched from their respective races today. We will share more as to the reason why as soon as it becomes public, but it is not due to anything with our horses specifically.
This sounds ..... suspicious.
Re: I bought a horse last night!
Damn. Not what I was expecting. May he rest in peace.
Christophe Clement Passes Away
Trainer Christophe Clement sadly passed away last night after a hard-fought battle with cancer. Click here to read a statement he prepared before his passing.
This is obviously a very delicate situation and, first and foremost, we will give Christophe’s family and team time and space to sort everything out. Christophe’s son and assistant Miguel had already begun taking over most aspects of the business and will continue to operate the Clement stable moving forward.
For now, our horses will remain in excellent care with Team Clement. We will be back with more to report when we have additional information.
Anyone who has followed racing for the last few decades knows what an incredible horseman Mr. Clement was. He was a pleasure to work with and our hearts go out to those closest to him.

Munny Problem Update
We stopped by Churchill Downs to check in on Munny Problem, who quite frankly could not look any better than he does right now. Bas Nicholl, trainer D. Wayne Lukas's assistant of over 22 years, expressed to us how the entire team really likes your colt, including Wayne himself as previously mentioned. Your son of Munnings will start to learn the starting gate in the coming weeks and is on course for a debut at some point this summer.
Yeah, compared to being "pretty limited as far as talent goes", that is a nice update to get.
That's a beautiful horse.

Just generally speaking, anyone who hasn't seen a race in person should check it out at least once.
I did one time at Charlestown Races in WV.
(not my pic imo)
From just that experience I got a small inkling concerning how f*kking intimidating a cavalry charge from back in the day might have been to a guy *not* on a horse.

Improbable Luck Race Overview
Improbable Luck is set to make his third career start on Thursday, June 5 at Churchill Downs. Your trainer D. Wayne Lukas has tabbed Nik Juarez to ride. He will be the #9 among a field of 12 carded as the day’s 8th race. Post time is 8:23 p.m. ET.
Trainer D. Wayne Lukas will confer with Juarez and consider some new tactics, as he believes that an off-the-pace trip could help your son of Improbable break into the winner's circle. The class relief as he drops to the $50K maiden claiming level should certainly help as well, while also making him starter allowance eligible going forward. There are a lot of positives to this spot and we are hopeful that these adjustments in both class and tactics will lead to a much-improved finish. Best of luck to all owners.
Improbable Luck is the horse in my avatar, which poptart used to provide insightful commentary:

Anyway, he has a race tomorrow evening. Geaux for it, Improbable Luck!

I went to Del Mar a few times back in the day (when I lived in Del Mar). And more recently a few of the companies I worked for had outings at the track. My buddy used to live just up the hill from the entrance. They also have the San Diego County Fair there.bungle clone wrote: ↑Thu May 29, 2025 8:37 pm Just generally speaking, anyone who hasn't seen a race in person should check it out at least once.

Really fun but not something I have done in probably 30 years. I may have to check it out again, but Del Mar is a fucking zoo during racing season.
There's a winner in each race. Who knew?

Gem of an old vid. Nice find.
Re: I bought a horse last night!
Not as deep of a pull as you might think. Der Bingle was a founding director of the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club when the track was built in 1936. He had a large estate in Rancho Santa Fe a few miles east of there. They’ve been using that as their theme song ever since. It doesn’t have the cachet or history of the triple crown tracks but there’s a lot of tradition there (at least for California). And there’s no track with a nicer setting.
