As for King's assessment of Jack and Shelly's performances, he is bitter about Jack being the villain and doesn't recognize Shelly's realistic arc from abused wife to heroine. Three men had the Shine in the movie, Shelly had no supernatural gifts but fought and won without losing her sanity. Guess the dump stat.

Stephen King is a great writer in need of an editor. He's created way too many iconic horror stories to be dismissed as merely a pulp writer. Having said that, Kubrick took the Shining to another level. His Shelly was a realistic portrayal of a woman who is about to break, but doesn't. She felt real. Maybe I should watch it again, though.

I wish he had survived to finish AI. Why would they give it to Spielberg instead of a director approaching Kubrick's level?
