Wow, I've never heard that Genesis verse as an explanation of discord in families and the discipline of kids. I've usually heard it as a prophecy that the seed of a woman (Jesus) will hurt the serpent and finally kill his power, or at the very least go against the bloodlines that are usually along t...

Even sicker is how loose he strings his racquet. I was looking into obscure tennis facts the other day and found that Federer strings his at 52 lbs., Roddick at 64 and Blake at a bit higher. Thing is the fewer the lb. pressure, the more power generated by the raquet but most players lose control the...

My recreational reading goes all over the map, mostly I like humor (anything by Merrill Markoe cracks me up) and mysteries, but last week on a whim I went for a halfway serious rec read and picked up 'Blink', and would recommend it to anyone that likes anything dealing with social behavior. It's fun...

Any ideas on how to connect all that to the fact that we have millions of undocumented workers in this country? It's real easy to say that the illegal population is taking jobs that Americans don't want, but the fact remains that entry jobs lead to higher pay...and if our legal population doesn't ha...

poptart, I hear ya. No one looks ready to beat Federer, although Nadal has had pretty good success at it so far. Federer is just a tennis machine, the whole deal of perfection in all the shots and shot selection. When folks hang with him for one set or two, it always seems like he's just tuning up f...

Weird route the thread took. But the whole idea of tennis being a sport for wusses just needs a reset on how freaking fast they hit the ball. Tell me a guy whose on his last legs and can still return a 130 mph serve in the court, and then get back and return again and again is a wuss? I don't think ...

Sports news, like other news, sometimes goes immediatley to the disaster scenario...like the Baghdadis cramping or Agassi's bad back. The match, all 3 hours and almost 4, was more great tennis than the disaster stuff. You either like it or you don't, but if you like tennis you would love that match....

Since my son is 14 and just recently started to play guitar....this is his post from here on. Since she is a girl, I would suggest starting off on an electric guitar. If she doesn't know if she is dedicated or not, I would get a cheapo guitar. But make sure it works. I have an Epihone Les Paul, it's...

We could all go on about Agassi's wives, but the fact remains.... Agassi is the only player in the open era to have won every Grand Slam singles title, the Masters, the Davis Cup, and an Olympic gold medal. Other mens singles players (4 others) have won as many majors, but this guy has also gone eve...

Agassi was f-ing nails! Down 4-0 in the third set and fought for every single point. Plus he still looked fresh at the end. Incredible match, guts on the court tennis about as good as it comes. Great play by Pavel also, but he wasn't the news. Gotta feel halfway bad for the guy playing a first round...

The idea that God allows people to do horrible things is sometimes promoted as some sort of proof that there is not God. What I would like to see from anyone who promotes that argument is an alternative. If you think that free will, and its sometimes disastrous results, is some sort of proof that Go...

The beauty of all the miracles in both the old and the new testament is that they work with natural happenings. So, everyone has the choice...call it faith...to believe in them or not. The parting of the waters, the wine from water, the walking on water, even the resurrection of Christ...can all be ...

If you doubt that there are modern miracles, please take some time to read The Miracle Detective by Randall Sullivan. It's a really good book written by a skeptic who lived closely with the kids who were having visions of Mary and did a good bunch of research on the historical Mary visions to be abl...

I like the idea of just showing kids how little they make for working hard. My kid, who has wonderful checks for huge amounts of money show up for no other reason than that he lived another year, decided to actually work for something. He is only 14, with the attitude that comes with it, but threw h...

When I posted this, I had some misgivings about the kid, and said so in the the post...but I still thought he had some good ideas out there for his age. My first thought was that he was kind of naive as we all were at that age, but had some good thoughts...albeit some half-assed thoughts. One thing ...

another take on education
Just another view on the educational system, this time by a valedictorian who was yanked off the stage by his principal. The reason that I’m posting this is that there have been some good discussions here on education, and I think this is a neat window into the mind of a young man who decided that t...
