Seems like a nice job from Southwest pilot. WTF with ATC or private jet pilot?!?

I've seen Asian women drive the 405 like that. Everyone else does just what that Southwest pilot did.

'cept the SW pilot probably didn't have time to flip the other pilot off.

It's too bad airplanes can't dump the blue water mid-flight anymore. Would have been a perfect moment to evacuate the shitter all over that executive jet.

Wasn’t ATC’s fault. They told him repeatedly to hold.

Good job by the SWA pilots.

Question for lefty.

Have you ever had to do a last second go around like that?

Is it SOP for 1 pilot to drive while the other scans the field for such dumbfukkery? I would think that should be the case.

Anyhoo good on them for having good situational awareness.

Agree major props to the WN pilots. Solid job.

Meanwhile in PHX another WN pilot changed his radio frequency and almost caused another midair collision.

As for a last second go around I have done a handful of them. One was a windsheer alert that was routinely practiced.

Another I think I shared here. We were landing in Sugar Land TX and we thought there was a log rolling along the runway. We executed a go around and then let the tower know why. They saw it as well and turns out it was an alligator out for a walk.

To answer the question, at least one person is or should be head out of the cockpit. If the approach is being hand flown then the pilot flying is looking out the window. Hand flying happens way more in the US than in other locales where auto land is used almost exclusively. See the Asiana crash at SFO a decade or so ago where those pilots had to hand fly and they came up just short on a clear good weather day.

At least one set of eyes should be outside of the cockpit when landing. And when either one says abort go around, there is no questioning and training reflexes kick in.

Of course, the pilot's eyes will be out the window during a VFR landing. I was asking if the guy who's not driving should also be looking outside, scanning things off to the side which the guy driving might not see, as he kind of has tunnel vision on the spot on the ground he is attempting to hit.

Generally both are eyes out of the cockpit at landing. There are times we also need to look at the dials, but lots of modern planes have a heads up display as well.
