How do you WORDLE?

Post by HighPlainsGrifter »

A discussion in the Big Time College Football forum reminded me of a wordle thread we had fun with at .net.

Wordle got to be pretty easy so to make it fun I started writing sentences and hoping the final word would make sense in context. Some highlights:

Ah yeah, the Wordle thread.
I still try to play every day, but usually get
busy and miss 1 or two.

Four today, three yesterday and two the day before. Not sure I like this trend.

I’ve been stuck at 98% for a while. I had several misses in the first couple of weeks until I got it figured out. Only a couple since then.

I've been playing this highly addictive game every day since one of you guys introduced it to the board.

Nice diversion during the day.

I've had a couple of instances of getting it on the 2nd guess, but other than that, my average settles around the 4th guess.

Today's word would have made a great themed sentence but I started out wrong. Win some, lose some.

Similar to your step dads on Saturday night, I finished in 5.

I blew today's in a vain attempt to do a Mikey's 100 streak theme. Cest la vie.

LOL, but A for effort. My previous streak was 99 so it took a while to beat that.

I've never thought to do it that way....I just come up with a word that uses a bunch of vowels, then start guessing, then by process of elimination figure it out...presently after missing one day a while ago...540 played. 98% streak is 106.

That's how I do it. I usually start with "raise" because it's got some common consonants as well as vowels. According to the NY Times, the most common starting word is "adieu" but I don't think that the "u" adds that much.

Whoa, I had only my 3rd instance of getting the word on the 2nd guess. This time though, I had no letter hint at all on the first guess.

Talk about rare. Damn.

I like THOSE as a starting word for my sentence building. I knew today's word in three but added two more words to make a better sentence.

I may need to change my game a bit.

I always start with either adieu or audio and still just settle into a nearly perfect normal distribution.

Maybe I'll use winning team names for the "N to the power of infinity" bowls that are coming up.

According to the NYT, adieu is the most commonly used opening word, I guess because it uses a lot of vowels. But there is some thought that the vowels aren’t as important as a lot people think, and that it’s better to discover, or eliminate as many consonants as possible because there are so many. I’ve had a bunch of times where I had three correct vowels but took five six tries to get the right consonants because of so many potential valid combinations. The times that I’ve failed to solve it in six tries were mostly like that.

I fail somewhere in between. I always start with “raise” because all three of those vowels are pretty common. “U” not so much. “R” and “s” are also pretty common. If only one of those vowels works then I follow up with “tough.” That gets the rest of the vowels out there plus some additional commonly used consonants. If the “u” is yellow I’ll often try a word starting with “qu.” You also have to keep in mind that they mostly use fairly common words and no plurals.

Other than that I guess there’s a lot of luck involved.

1. Autos
2. Liner
3. Champ, Chimp, Chomp, or Chump many times if I
do not have a better 3rd choice.

Today I set out to write an offensive sentence about a certain ethnic group.

Nailed the answer on the first try!
